BREVET D'INVENTION'.

En ce qui concerne le compartiment a à faire com- porter audit aéroplane, on l'agence, ainsi que connu, de manière telle , qu'il comporte tous aménagements le rendant habita- ble, qu'il se présente sous la forme d'une embarcation autonome comportant, pour sa propulsion, un groupe moto- propulseur b et un système gouvernail c, qu'il soit pilotable en navigation du même poste de pilotage servant à la conduite en vol; et qu'il puisse constituer, en quelque sorte, au moins une partie du fuselage de l'aéroplane à. établir;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
ayant constitué la partie extrême arrière du fuse- lage de n'importe quelle manière appropriée, avantageusement sous la forme d'une poutre croisillonnée, on ancre par des joints articulés appropriés cette partie extrême sur un ca- dre r, évidé si nécessaire pour laisser passage à l'étambot du compartiment détachable ? on rend ledit cadre pliable autour d'un axe perpen- diculaire à la direction des tubes ± axe matérialisé, par des charnières s1 et s2;
on réunit en ayant recours.aux endroits appropriés, à des joints articulés, d'une part, chaque coin dudit cadre à la douille 3. se trouvant en regard, par un élément rigide constituant prolongement du longeron passant par le susdit coin, et, d'autre part, chacune des douilles p portées par les pièces n vissées dans un même tube k, à l'une des charnières s1, s2 du cadre,par un élément rigide u, ce avan- tageusement de manière à réaliser deux assemblages plans tri @ susceptibles, lors de l'écartement des pièces n amené par la rotation du tube k, de se plier à cet écarte- ment grâce aux charnières a1 et s , ainsi qu'aux articula- tions prévues aux endroits appropriés;
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

PATENT'.
"improvements to aircraft comprising a detachable compartment capable of floating, in particular to airplanes comprising such a compartment a.
The invention relates to aircraft comprising a detachable compartment capable of floating; and it relates more particularly (because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest), but not exclusively, 'among these aircraft, airplanes comprising such a compartment.
Its aim, above all, is to make such aircraft of the kind in question that they respond better than hitherto to the various desiderata of practice.
It consists, mainly, in disposing in such a way, the detachable compartment to be included in the aircraft of the type in question, that it is inserted by serving as a link between two parts of the structure of the aircraft, resistant members. being planned crossing

said compartment suitable for joining or releasing at will the interrupted members of the aforesaid structure.
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions, which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below, in particular: in a second provision consisting in having recourse, for fixing the detachable compartment to the aircraft, to screw joints that can be unscrewed from inside the aforesaid compartment.
It relates more particularly to a certain mode of application, as well as certain embodiments, of said provisions; and it relates more particularly also, and this by way of new industrial products, to the aircrafts of the type in question comprising the application of the aforesaid provisions, as well as the special elements specific to their.

establishment.
And it can, in any event, be clearly understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the appended drawings, which supplement and drawings are, of course, given above all by way of indication.

According to the invention, and more particularly according to that of its modes of application. as well as those of the embodiments of its various parts, to which it seems that preference should be given, assuming, for example, that one intends to establish an airplane, one goes about it. as follows, or analogously.
As regards the compartment to be provided with said airplane, it is arranged, as is known, in such a way that it includes all arrangements making it habitable, that it is in the form of an autonomous boat comprising, for its propulsion, a propulsion unit b and a rudder system c, which can be piloted in navigation from the same cockpit used for flight control; and that it can constitute, in a way, at least part of the fuselage of the airplane. establish;
and it is made to comprise, passing through it, resistant members d terminated, on either side of the compartment, by attachment means e, for example with keying, suitable for serving to connect the compartment a with the rest of the structure of the airplane. and to allow, when desired, the rupture of said connection, said members d being intended to be interlocked in the frame of the aircraft and therefore being in such number and arranged in such a way that they correspond to the type of airplane to be established.
As regards, then, all the constituent parts of the airplane other than its * compartment, that is to say its airfoil, its motor-propulsion system, its undercarriage or ditch system, its stabilizer and its control surfaces, they are arranged in such a way that assembled with the compartment, they constitute a complete airplane of one of the usual types, for example, and as will be sup-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
installed below, a monoplane airplane with lower rigid stays, comprising two engine spindles! arranged respectively on either side of the axis, in line with the wheels of the landing gear,
and that their connection with the compartment only takes place by means of the attachment means comprised by the members passing through said compartment.
The elements d are four in number and are arranged in such a way that two of them are each respectively in the extension of a wing spar and that the other two are suitable for bringing together the tie rods included. by guy lines; the aforesaid constituent parts other than compartment a are brought together in the following three distinct groups: two symmetrical groups each constituting half of the airfoil and each supporting an engine spindle and half of the lander; and a unit suitable for constituting the rear part of the fuselage and the empennage, and carrying the control surfaces.
The connection is made between, on the one hand, the compartment and, on the other hand, the first two of the aforesaid groups, only by the attachment means e. the assembly consisting of the two aforesaid groups and the elements d constituting a rigid assembly of appropriate strength.
In the same way, the connection is made, on the one hand, of compartment a with. on the other hand, the third of the aforesaid groups only by the attachment means e, for example by the four of said means arranged towards the rear of the compartment a.
In other words, the assembly is arranged in such a way that the compartment is the node of the construction and that, after detaching from the rest of the aircraft, said
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
compartment is clear, on all sides, unlike what would happen if it were housed. in a cell of the structure., cell or said compartment could be trapped even after releasing its ties.
And, finally, the control members are connected in such a way to the control surfaces and to the engines, that the connections' produced can be broken without difficulty and without altering the tightness of compartment a, which is why, for example. Ple, use is made, for the control of the control surfaces, of flexible wires, which will be easy to cut or disconnect, said wires leaving the compartment through an orifice provided with sealing means; and, for the control of the motors, with rotating rods h crossing, by an appropriate cable gland, the wall of the compartment a and connected, externally to said compartment, by sliding fittings (for example with square ) with rods 1 going to the various components to be controlled.
As a result, an assembly is obtained which, by the simple operation of the attachment means e, can, for example after a fall at sea, be rapidly divided into four portions, one of which, the compartment a released. can override by own means, the release of compartment a being ensured in all cases with much greater security than with previous devices which generally had, as indicated above, risk of the compartment jamming in the structure of the airplane.
And, either one is satisfied to proceed as it has just been said, or else, and better, one has recourse to provisions such as the. following and which can, if necessary, be used in isolation.
According to said provision. we use, as mo-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
yens of attachment e, to screw joints that can be unscrewed from inside the compartment a.
For this purpose, the resistant members d are formed in the form of tubes ± for example of steel, of length respectively at least equal to the width present, at the place where each of said resistant members must be arranged, the compartment a; said tubes having at least their ends forming cylindrical surfaces l.
As many sets of two gland bearings m are placed passing through the walls facing said compartment and at the appropriate places as there are tubes k to be supported, said bearings being made such that they allow the rotation of the glands. tubes k while ensuring the seal at the place where said tubes pass through the wall of the compartment.
The two end parts of the interior of each of the tubes k are tapped in the opposite direction, the tubes k are mounted in their respective bearings m, and parts n are made suitable for screwing into the tapping thus established, parts which is made to include a ring o clean to be fixed directly, either to the ends of the wing spars, or auxtitants of the guy wire.
In addition, on the four parts intended to simultaneously secure the rear elements of the wing structure and the rear part of the fuselage, bushings p to which will be fixed, for example by nuts and bolts, four clean longitudinal members q to constitute the reinforcement of the aforesaid rear part of the fuoelage.
Said rear part is arranged in such a way that .. when assembled with the detachable compartment., It constitutes a rigid assembly, and that its constitution does not imply the separation of the ends of the side members q with the sockets p.
For this, for example:
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
having formed the rear end part of the fuselage in any suitable manner, advantageously in the form of a cross beam, this end part is anchored by suitable articulated joints on a frame r, hollowed out if necessary to leave passage to the sternpost of the detachable compartment? said frame is made foldable around an axis perpendicular to the direction of the tubes ± materialized axis, by hinges s1 and s2;
it is brought together by having recourse to appropriate places, articulated joints, on the one hand, each corner of said frame to the socket 3. lying opposite, by a rigid element constituting an extension of the spar passing through the aforesaid corner, and, on the other hand, each of the bushings p carried by the parts n screwed into the same tube k, to one of the hinges s1, s2 of the frame, by a rigid element u, this advantageously so as to produce two plane assemblies tri @ capable, during the spacing of the parts n brought about by the rotation of the tube k, to bend to this spacing thanks to the hinges a1 and s, as well as to the joints provided at the appropriate places;
and the frames formed by the elements t buttressing are made undeformable, for example, by crosswise shoring. the same rigid side; [. of the frame r, said side of this frame, and finally the structure of the detachable compartment.
Finally, we are planning. means to ensure the. rotation of the tubes k, rotation which, made in the desired sena, will bring., for each tube, the simultaneous release of the two parts n screwed into the ends of said tube, therefore. separation from the compartment has structural elements attached to said parts.
Said means are advantageously arranged in such a way that the rotation in the senavoulu. of all the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
tubes lt is ensured by the same maneuver and that said maneuver is produced mechanically.
To this end, use is advantageously made, as driving force, of the motor of the power train h. which is joined by all appropriate means at the same time to all the tubes k so as to make it possible to ensure the simultaneous rotation of the tubes thus the simultaneous release of all the parts n, a clutch and a appropriate gear ratios being provided.,
For example, it is advantageous to include
EMI8.1
each tube k a helical wheel w and we have two a tht r1, two, Vtwo shafts xl, x2, four endless via i specific to / control the rotation of said wheels, the aforementioned shafts xl and - 2 being, d ' on the one hand, assembled so as to rotate at the same speed and, on the other hand, controlled by the engine of the powertrain b.
It should be noted that, in accordance with the invention, the aforesaid engine will be made to fulfill, in addition to its functions of propelling and releasing the canopy, the functions of supplying electricity and com. - award-winning (especially for starting flight engines).
As goes without saying, and as moreover already emerges from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts having more specifically been considered; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants.
