<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

' extrté corres- pondante du culbuteur 19 et ce pivotement est commandé par le paterne articulé 28 manoeuvrable de l'extérieur . Afin que le galet 17 soit toujours disposé normalement par rapport à la surface de la came 13, cette dernière est légèrement incurvée. le centre de Dette incurvation étant
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

DEVICE FOR SUPPLYING INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES.
The present invention relates to improvements to the devices described in the main patent and more particularly to the fuel pump and to the sprayer described in this patent.
The improved pump according to the present invention is still of the type comprising a movable cylinder whose delivery end is applied, in a sealed manner, during a portion of the delivery stroke of the pistons against a delivery orifice presented by the reservoir containing the liquid to be delivered and in which the cylinder moves, and this pump is essential.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
LEMENT characterized by the fact that it comprises, for the control of the displacement of the cylinder, a cam or equivalent, preferably wedged on the shaft of the control eccentric of the pump piston, the profile and the wedging, with respect to to said eccentric, of this cam being such that, by means of an appropriate kinematic system, it controls,
during the suction stroke of the piston a certain displacement of the cylinder to disengage it from the discharge port and, during the discharge stroke of the piston, a movement in the opposite direction to this cylinder to apply it against said discharge port ..
Means are provided for adjusting the amplitude of the portion of the pedestrian delivery stroke during which the cylinder remains applied against the delivery orifice, these means, which thus allow adjustment. the flow rate of the pump, consisting, according to a particular embodiment, in giving the control cam a variable profile along the width of this cam so that, depending on whether it acts by one or more the other of its cross sections, it causes the application of the cylinder against the delivery orifice more or less early during the delivery stroke of the pump piston,,
According to a particular embodiment,
this cam is constituted by a cylinder having a groove limited on one side, by a generator, and on the other side by a helical ramp, the two ends of which are at 1800 1'un = on the other.. this cam causing the rise or descent of a roller which controls, by means of any suitable articulated system, the displacement of the cylinder,
the pump flow adjustment being obtained by varying the -longitudinal position of the cam ¯ in relation to the roller .-. This variation of the relative longitudinal position between the cam and the roller can be obtained either
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
by displacement of the cam on the axis of the shaft which carries it, or by displacement of the roller relative to this cam.
Can the articulated system inserted between the roller and the cylinder affect? different farms,
According to one characteristic of the invention, the various control members of the piston and of the cylinder are housed in a housing in which also moves the lower end of the cylinder, the upper end of which moves, as mentioned above, in. the liquid reservoir to. upset, this casing and this reservoir being separated by a slightly elastic membrane which is held externally in a bearing surface of the casing while internally. it is integral with the cylinder, the displacement of which is permitted due to the elasticity of this menbrane.
The sprayer that the invention also aims is essentially characterized by the fact that the openings provided in the hollow stem of the valve are normally closed (in the closed position of the valve) at their inner end by a fixed tube in which the fuel is supplied, the relative position of the seat of the valve, of the openings thereof, and of the aforementioned inner tube being such that, during the opening movement of the valve, said openings are not exposed by the fixed tube only after the valve has de-energized. stuck with no seat and allowed the passage of a violent current of air which will pulverize the fuel arriving by the openings.
Various embodiments of the devices according to the invention have been shown in the accompanying drawing schematically and simply by way of example.

Fig. 10 is a longitudinal sectional elevational view of a sprayer according to another embodiment, in the closed position,
Fig. 11 shows the same sprayer in the open position.
Figs. 12, 13, 14 and 15 show construction variants of the sprayer of fig. 10.
The pump shown in FIG, 1 essentially comprises a frame forming, at the lower part, a casing in which the various pump components are housed and, at the upper part, a reservoir 3 which is constantly full of the liquid to be delivered, which arrives via line 1,
The piston 5 of this pump performs a reciprocating movement inside a cylinder under the action of an eccentric or similar member wedged on a control shaft 8.
The cylinder 6 is also liable to perform a certain reciprocating displacement so that it can
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
occupy, either the position of fig. 1 for which its upper end 9, would be conical, comes to rest tightly against the conical mouth 10 of the discharge orifice 11 provided with a ball valve 12, must the position of fig.2 for which the end 2. of this cylinder is released from said mouth 10. The movement of this cylinder 6 is controlled by means of a cam 13 wedged on the shaft 8 and which has been shown in detail on figs * 5 and 6.
As can be seen in these figures, this cam is essentially constituted by a cylinder in which a groove is made. limited on one side by a generatrix 14 of this cylinder and, on the other side, by a helical ramp whose two ends are located 180 from each other, this groove thus having a greater or lesser length according to the various transverse sections of the cylinder constituting the cam. In other words, this cam comprises two concentric cylindrical portions 15 and 16, the internal concentric portion 16, having a greater or lesser length depending on the cross section of the cam.
The angular setting of this cam on the shaft 8 is such that the generator 14 corresponds to the top dead center of the piaf on 5. The cam 13 acts on a roller 17 carried by a lever 18 which acts, by its upper end, on a rocker arm 19 pivoting at 20 and acting, through its other end on a shoulder 21 of cylinder 6. A spring 22 or equivalent, acts constantly on cylinder 1 to apply its end 9 against the mouth 10.
In the case where it is, as shown, a pump for supplying internal combustion engines, it is necessary to separate in a sealed manner, the tank 3 from the tank 2. In the case of FIG. .1, this result is obtained by means of an elastic membrane
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
.lA which is maintained externally in the bearing surfaces 24 of the housing 1 and which, internally, is clamped between a shoulder 25a of the cylinder.µ and a nut 26a. The movement of the cylinder is made possible thanks to the elasticity of this membrane 21 which can be deformed, as can be seen in fig.2.
The operation of the pump is as follows: The piston 5 being at top dead center. as shown in fig.1, the cylinder 6, by the display of the. cam 13. also occupies its high position for which its end 9 is applied against the mouth 10. From the start of the suction stroke of the piston 5, the cam 13 which rotates in the direction of the arrow indicated in FIG. 5, acts ,, by its outer cylindrical portion 15, on the roller 17 to cause its lifting.
This lifting results in the pivoting of the rocker 18 which acts on the shoulder 21 in antagonism to the action of the spring 22 to bring the cylinder 6 into the position of fig.2 for which its end! is clear of the mouthpiece 10.
It will be noted that, because the outer portion 15 of the cam is cylindrical, the cylinder is immobilized in the position of fig. 2 for a certain time during which the oil or other liquid from the reservoir 3 enters the cylinder. 8µ upper chamber of this µ cylinder. The piston 5, after having passed the bottom dead center, begins its discharge stroke which, as long as the end% of the cylinder is not applied against the mouthpiece 10, will have no other effect than to discharge the cylinder. oil from chamber .lA. in the tank 3.
On the contrary, as soon as the cam 13 ceases to act via its outer cylindrical portion 15 to present its inner cylindrical portion 16 opposite the roller 17,

the roller, It can go down again and @ under the action of the spring

bend the cylinder jg, goes up and its end i comes to apply in a sealed manner, centers the mouth 10. The piston 5 completing its discharge stroke, discharges the oil contained in the chamber 25 through 1! discharge port 11 .
It is easy to see that by varying the am-

this Lady 4.3 .. The longitudinal cleplaaejaent of the latter is obtained by means of a swinging arm z6 controlled from the outside, the cam.a being. mounted on 1fL keys which allow its longitudinal displacement but force it to turn with the shaft 8.
EMI7.5
In the example of Fig * 3i, the cam II is fixed longitudinally and, 0 ', is the roller 17 which can move with respect to this cam ,, For this purpose its end
EMI7.6
upper can be rotated relative to 1;
The corresponding end of the rocker arm 19 and this pivoting is controlled by the articulated paterne 28 operable from the outside. So that the roller 17 is always disposed normally with respect to the surface of the cam 13, the latter is slightly curved. the center of Debt incurvation being
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
preferably close to the point around which the roller 17 itself pivots.
There is shown in fig.4 a construction variant of the transmission system interposed between the cam 13 and the cylinder 6. According to this variant, the spring 22 constantly tends to bring the cylinder 6 into the lowered position, while the rocker arm 19 acts on this cylinder - to apply its end 9 against the mouth 10. In this case, the groove of the blade 13 is replaced by a projection of identical shape, that is to say that it is limited in a senna by a generator and, in the other direction, by a helical ramp.
In order to obtain a certain elasticity in the transmission of movement, thanks to which the end 9 of the cylinder 1 will always be applied in a sealed manner against the mouthpiece 10 ,, the rod 18 controls the rocker arm 19 by means of 'a spring 30.
It will be noted that the membrane 23, due to its reciprocating displacement in which the cylinder 6 drives it, causes a suction effect which facilitates the arrival of the liquid in the reservoir 3. However, in certain cases, this membrane could be replaced by a press *, ordinary packing 31, as is the case in fig. 4.
The pump according to the invention is particularly applicable for supplying internal combustion engines. In this application, it offers great * advantages owing to the fact that the movement of the cylinder being positively controlled, unlike the arrangements currently known, this cylinder will always perform its movement under the desired conditions regardless of the wear. In addition, the pump flow rate can be very precise.

The fuel which arrives by the, oenàuite 1t39 is brought to the lower end of the tube 1a by a second tube before the said end of the tube, passes an orifice calibrated lap which 'on J Quant 1. , allows <, the passage of the rombuetîble in the recess of the valve.

The relative paeitien of the valve seat 1039 of the openings 108 and the fixed inner tube 106 is such that. during the opening movement of the valve, the latter first takes off from its seat 103 so that, under the

fluence of the depression reigning inside the cylinder,, the air which arrives through holes, such as 113, this violai ment sucked towards this cylinder.
The openings 108 are then discovered by the fixed tube 106 (fig.9). The fuel @ admitted into the recess 112 can then only pass @ through these openings 108 to be entrained by the previously established air stream. With this arrangement, all the fuel is pulverized. At the start of the opening of the valve, it is not possible. poor spraying and even a complete absence of fuel spraying.
The valve is returned to its closed position by a spring or equivalent means 114.
The sprayer shown in Figs.10 and 11 is more particularly applicable to motors running at high speed and with essentially variable operating speed. These motors are generally applied in combination with a movement infection pump synchronized with the movement of the motor. The orifice 111 forming the nozzle can therefore in this case be omitted, as can consequently also the second inner tube 110. This is clearly apparent from FIG.
It will also be noted that, in this case, the fuel is discharged directly inside the tube 106 and that the pressure of this fuel is exerted against the valve 104 of which it facilitates or even causes the opening movement. . Apart from this feature, the operation of this sprayer is strictly identical to that of the sprayer of Figures 8 and 9.
The forms of construction of the rods 1a, 13, 14. and 15 are simple variants of particular interest to the realization of the inner tube 106 and its mode of cooperation with the valve for the establishment of the communication.
