EMI1.1

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Fig. 1 of the appended drawing is a vertical section of the anterior end of a pneumatic utensil to which the invention is applied.
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line 2-2 of FIG. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the sleeve of the fastening device.
In the drawing, the invention is shown applied to a pneumatic utensil comprising a cylinder A in which engages the rod B of a working tool C. The rod B is guided by a bearing D engaged in the front end of the cylinder A and it enters a cavity E of the cylinder so as to receive the blows of a hammer piston F. At the junction point of the rod B and the body of the tool Ç is a collar which can butt against the cylinder. front end of cylinder A so as to limit the distance up to which rod B can engage in the cylinder.
According to the present invention, devices are used which serve to prevent the ejection of the working tool C from the cylinder A. For this purpose, the cylinder A comprises at its front end several annular ribs H intended to support a fixing sleeve. J. At its rear end, the sleeve J has internal annular grooves K in which the annular grooves H of the cylinder engage. In this case, the sleeve J is divided longitudinally into L so as to be composed of two halves 0 and P.
When assembled, parts 0 and P are in contact with each other along the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
dividing line and they have at their anterior end edges Q directed inwards and comprising semi-cylindrical openings R in which the working tool C. engages.
A suitable device is used to tighten parts 0 and P of sleeve 3 on cylinder A. The device used for this purpose consists of a nut S comprising a threaded part T intended to cooperate with a corresponding threaded part U of the cylinder part which is behind the annular ribs H.
The front end of the nut S comprises a hollow extension V which, in the assembly position of the nut, covers the parts 0 and P in their parts adjacent to the annular grooves K. To ensure a suitable pressure on the sleeve J so as to keep it safely away from vibrations, the inner wall W of the extension V is tapered outwards so as to correspond to the tapered outer surfaces of parts 0 and P of the sleeve, parts on which builds this parai.
Near the rear end of the nut S is an outer annular groove Y which serves as a housing for a spring ring which serves to lock the nut S to prevent inadvertent rotation on the cylinder A. spring ring Z ends at one end with a finger b arranged so as to engage through one of the holes in a row of holes a c made in the nut S and in a groove d of the cylinder A.
The anterior end of the sleeve J has elastic members such as a rubber pad e for

When used with a working tool such as a clay shovel or with parts whose edges have a larger diameter than the body of the tool, the plug e can be split so that it can be mounted around of the work tool body.
This pad eade prefers a size such that it can be passed freely around the tool for which it serves as a pad.
At the front end of the sleeve is a buffer washer, which may be of fibrous material, to prevent entry of foreign material into the sleeve 1 'of the fastener. A similar washer g is fitted to the posterior end of the buffer and this washer in turn serves as a seat for a loose collar h which the stationary collar G of the work tool can abut. Collar h is either one piece or it may be in two halves to suit the particular type of work tool with which it is to be used.
In order to mount the device on the utensil for the purpose of fixing the working tool C in the cylinder A, the working tool is first inserted into the cylinder. The parts formed by the members serving as buffers, for example the buffer e, the washers f and ± and the collar h, are then placed around the working tool, in front of the fixed collar G. Then the parts 0 and P of the sleeve are placed on the cylinder and the nut S is screwed forward until the conical wall W of the extension V rests on the conical surface of the parts of the sleeve. After having screwed the nut fully in, one can 1introduce the finger b of the spring ring Z into the groove d through one of the slots c opposite.
The finger b will be securely held in. the groove d by the elasticity of the ring Z so as to prevent any untimely rotation of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
nut S and parts 0 and!: of the sleeve will be securely held on cylinder A. @
If you wish to remove the working tool and replace it with another, you can remove the finger b from the groove, d and unscrew the nut S until the extension V has passed the end. posterior sleeve J.
We can then easily remove the parts of the sleeve with the elements: forming buffers, which allows to introduce another working tool in. the cylinder.
