<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Improvements to devices for testing road motor vehicles."
The present invention relates to an apparatus improved for testing road motor vehicles.
The invention comprises the use of supports for the road wheels, the position of which can be varied to simulate the conditions of the road.
Especially the invention includes the use of adjustable supports for the road wheels, which can be fixed in different positions which correspond with the different ramps of the road.
In addition, the invention comprises the use of a device for engaging the chassis or an adjoining part thereof in combination with a mechanism, to determine the traction force of the vehicle.
In addition, the invention includes the various accessory features described below.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The accompanying drawing schematically represents one way of carrying out the invention.
Referring to the drawing, four brackets are employed for the wheels, one for each road wheel of the vehicle.
These brackets are mounted in an adjustable manner, so that they can be properly fixed for different vehicles. Preferably, each support comprises an endless belt or platform b, which moves around a pair of hens ± so as to form a flat track. The top or effective part of the track can be supported on several rollers d very close together, to prevent the track from flexing unduly and to maintain a sufficiently smooth surface under the wheel. Preferably, each wheel support is mounted on a pivoted cradle, the inclination of which can be varied. 'in any suitable way, to replicate different ramps from the road. For example,
each of the tracks shown can be arranged so as to be able to oscillate about the axis of one of the end pulleys, as indicated, to vary the inclination or the slope of the track. The supports can also be arranged to be able to be adjusted relatively in the vertical direction $ in a manner which would correspond to the inequalities of the road. If desired, one or more blocks e can be attached to one or more of the lanes or arranged to move in combination with them, to simulate an obstacle such as a large stone in the road.
Each of the supports for the rear wheels is connected to a dynamo-electric machine, or both supports are connected to the same machine, which serves to absorb the driving force produced at the rear road wheels, by the vehicle engine. two electric motors can also be used to control the front wheel supports.
The current for this motor or motors can be supplied
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
by the generator or generators connected to the rear wheels.
To prevent the vehicle from rolling down the test device when the wheel supports are tilted, a pivoted arm f is attached, for example by means of a removable console k or by other means. means, to the frame or to any suitable part adjoining it, such as the axle of a wheel. The arm is combined with a pair of arms &, the ends of which rest on the plungers or diaphragms of a pair of hydraulic cylinders h, the fluid in them being connected to the pressure gauges 1. The pressure of the fluid gives the magnitude of the force necessary to hold the vehicle, ie. the magnitude of the tractive effort produced by the vehicle.
All control devices can, if desired, be grouped together on the same board.
By means of an apparatus as described above, a road motor vehicle can be tested in a fixed position, under conditions varying at will, and the necessary data concerning the running of the vehicle can be tested. obtained more easily than in the case of ordinary road tests. Treaties 1 indicate a fixed track by means of which the vehicle is driven on the test apparatus.
The invention is not limited to any special subordinate details, since these can be varied to meet different requirements.
