<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

control mechanisms suitable for regulating the temperature of an oven.
The invention relates to mechanisms detiés to control the evolution of a mechanical, physical or chemical phenomenon such as for example the operation of a device such as a funnel as a function of various variables of a mechanical nature, phys iq ue on . chemical such as temperature.
The control mechanisms can act in various ways, for example electrically.
In this case, the mechanism oomporte a contact arm or an equivalent member, the position of which is determined by the magnitude of a variable, for example the temperature inside an oven.
According to the invention, the contact pad cooperating with the aforesaid arm to close an electrical circuit is moved as a function of another variable, for example the time elapsed from a given initial instant. -In this way it is possible to increase or decrease the temperature inside the oven according to any law, suitable for example for a specific heat treatment.
The invention also provides for making the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
contact arm with two pads possibly movable as specified above the contact with one of these pads causing an intervention da control mechanism which does not stop until contact with the other pad occurs.
The invention also provides for an arrangement of the contact arm on the equivalent member such that the establishment of the on of the contacts a liea without preventing the free variation of the size used and in particular without hindering the free expansion of a rod. expansion used for example in the case of a temperature regulator.
In a control mechanism acting electrically, the invention also provides for arranging the parts which must come into contact in order to control an electrical circuit in such a way that when they are brought into contact they are subjected to each other. a sliding obtained for example by mounting one of these parts on a spring.
The invention further provides that the parts coming into contact to control an electrical circuit move somewhat together, after having come into contact, for example by compressing a spring.
The invention also relates to the fact that in a control mechanism actuating a movable part such as in particular a valve serving for example to control the flow rate of a fluid supplying a furnace which is required. to control the temperature, this moving part will be joined to its driving element with a certain play, with or without the interposition of a spring.
The invention also relates to controlling
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the supply of a furnace by means of shutters such as for example valves, by arranging these shutters in branches of the supply ducts so that the adjustment takes place only on part of the supply flow .for example by all we nothing we in any other way
In the case of a control mechanism comprising an expandable rod influenced by the temperature, for example of a furnace, and the length variations of which determine the variations in the position of a member of the aforesaid mechanism such as for example a contact arm , of the kind mentioned above,
the invention provides for arranging this member relative to the elements which act on it so as to compensate for the variations in the coefficient of expansion of the rod at various temperatures. that is to say that for the same lengthening of the rod, the amplitude of the variation in distance between the aforesaid member and the element with which it cooperates, for example a contact pad may be a function of the temperature at which this elongation occurs.
In the case where this contact pad is movable, the invention notably provides for inclining the direction of its trajectory relative to the direction of the expansion rod.
The invention also relates to: the fact of using for the constitution of this rod on the one hand a material having a fairly high mechanical strength and a high coefficient of expansion such as austenitic steel and on the other hand a material having a low coefficient of expansion like silica.

The accompanying drawings indicate by way of example and not by way of limitation various embodiments of the invention applicable to the control of the temperature of a core.
The invention extends to the various original features. included in the provisions shown.
In these drawings:
Fig. 1 shows the control circuit of an electrically heated oven.
Fig. 2 shows the control circuit of a gas-heated oven.
Fig.3 shows in perspective one of the members of the device shown in Fig.2
Fig.2 shows .. another member and in particular the device for actuating a valve.
Fig.5 is a section with breaks of an expansion rod established according to the invention.
In the case of FIG. 1, the oven 8 is electrically heated by a current supplied by means of two conductors 61f and 61f 'coming from two terminals 6f and 6f'.
In the case of fig. 1 and 2, the temperature prevailing inside the oven acts on an expansion rod aa which can be formed, for example, in the way which will be indicated with regard to fig.5.
This rod is supposed to be placed so that an increase in temperature proves a displacement of its end which comes into contact with the arm 7 directed so as to cause this arm to tilt towards the contact pad 7i (fig.l) or 7k (fig. 2) In sharp terms when the temperature increases, the length of which this rod extends outside the oven 2 decreases.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
This rod acts on a control mechanism that regulates the temperature inside the fo ur. This setting. can be carried out either so as to maintain the temperature constant, or so as to vary this temperature according to any law appropriate to a determined heat treatment.
Effectively, the Sa rod acts on a contact arm
7 pivoted in 7p and this around the pivot point of the latter so as to amplify the movements due to the variations of; length of said rod.
In the case of fig.l, the contact arm 7 cooperates with a contact pad 7i to close an electrical circuit bypassing a solenoid 6 which, when it is crossed by an electrical ocurant, causes the closing of the interposed circuit breaker 51. in the conductor 61f 'supplying the furnace when the solenoid 6 is short-circuited, the current stops passing through it and its core 5a integral with the arm 5 moves obeying the inaction of the return spring 5r.
In order to limit the intensity of the short-circuit current passing through the contact arm 7 and the pad 7i, a resistor 6r possibly constituted by a lamp is interposed in the circuit,
The invention provides that the contact pad 71 can be moved as a function of any variable, in particular as a function of the time elapsed from a given initial instant.
The device producing this displacement is shown schematically in the drawings by the fact that the contact pad 71 is disposed at the end of a threaded rod engaging in a fixed nut 71 and capable of being rotated by a motor.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
7m which can be constituted simply by a clockwork mechanism.
The circuit breaker 51 is produced by means of a bowl containing mercury and, in which two electrodes immerse, one of which 5k connected to the lever 5 comes out of the mercury when the plunger core 5a comes out of the solenoid 6. Although the rupture of the circuit is very sudden the existing rupture spark could lead to the oxidation of the mercury
In order to overcome this drawback, the mercury is according to the invention covered with a layer of water or a sodium carbonate solution sqeuse.
The opening of the heating circuit produced at 51 has the effect of preventing the increase in temperature. As soon as the latter drops, the expansion rod causes the arm to move against the action of its return spring 7r, the short-circuiting of the solenode 6 thus ceases to exist and the supply current is again supplied to the furnace 8 .
In the case of FIG. 2 when the contact arm 7 by coming into contact with the stud 7k has caused an intervention of the control mechanism, this intervention does not cease until the aforesaid contact arm comes into contact with a second - 7g stud.
This arrangement allows the control mechanism to intervene only when the temperature varies beyond certain limits.
The contact arm 7 is actuated by an auxiliary arm 7 'pivoted at 7p, subjected to the action of the expansion rod 2a and a return spring 7r The contact arm 7 is constantly urged to rest against the arm auxiliary 7 'by a return spring 7r.
The spring 7'r of the auxiliary arm
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
liaire 7 'is able to overcome the action of the spring 7r and consequently to apply the arm 7 against the stud 7k when the end of the expansion rod 2a allows this movement It is visible that the swing of the arm 7 against the one or the other of the pads 7k or 7g does not cause any obstacle to the free movement of the end of the rod 2a
The heating is carried out by means of gas supplied through a pipe 10 'provided with a bypass 10'd' in which is interposed an adjustment shutter 9 '. The air is supplied through a duct 10 provided with a bypass 10d in which is interposed an adjustment shutter 9.
These shutters are actuated by means of motor elements 9b and 9'b integral with plunger cores displaced so as to open said valves when a current passes through the solenoids s and 9's placed in series between the terminals. One of the conductors comprises two parts 5m and 5f between which is connected a switch provided with a movable armature 5 requested to close the circuit of the solenoids by contact made at the pad 5k under the action of the recoil spring 5r .
When the temperature in the oven 3 reaches a certain value, the year 2a brings the arm 7 into contact with the pad 7k which puts the solenoid 6 in circuit. This solenoid then attracts the soft iron mass 5a of the armature 5 of the switch which cuts the circuit between 5m and 5f.
At the same time the switch 5 closes by contact with the pad 6k a second circuit supplying the solenode 6. The latter will therefore remain in action even when the contact arm 7 separates from the contact pad 7k. This separation can result either from a cooling of the furnace causing a
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
contraction of the rod 2a or a displacement of the stud 7k actuated by the motor 7m. In addition, this separation does not produce a rupture spark since the parts 7 and 7k are at this moment short-circuited by the contact of the parts 5 and 6k. The solenoid 6 will remain in circuit until the moment when. the contact arm 7 will come into contact with the; plot 7g which will short-circuit said solenoid 6.
The armature 5 can then obey the action of its return spring 5r and the solenoid circuit will be cut, in 6k. The burst spark at 6k is reduced because the circuit cut off at this point now only includes the non-inductive resistor 6r. The solinoid remains switched off. The subsequent separation of parts 7 and 7g does not produce a rupture spark, since at this moment, the circuit of the selfenoid & 6 is no longer the seat of any current.
The 7'm motor determines the displacement of the contact pad 7g,
As can be seen in FIG. 2, the direction of the path of the contact pad 7k is inclined with respect to the direction of the rod 2a. the choice of an appropriate inclination makes it possible to compensate for the effects due to the variation in the coefficient of expansion of the rod 2a at various temperatures.
FIG. 3 represents an embodiment of the switch actuated by the solanoid. The frame 5 is pivoted at 5p around a part forming a knife. Part 5a is located opposite branch 6a through which the magnetic flux generated by solenoid 6. Return spring 5r tends to close the circuit of wire 5k. When the contact pieces 52 and 5 'on the one hand or the pieces 62 and 5' 'on the other hand are brought into contact, they undergo one
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
relative to 1'autre a sliding obtained by mounting the parts 52 and 68 on springs 51 and 61 respectively.
This sliding promotes good maintenance of the contact surfaces. The springs 51 and 61 also allow the parts 52 and 5 'or. 68 and 5 '' after they have come into contact to move somewhat together while compressing said springs so as to produce a good contact pressure.
Fig. 4 shows the device for actuating valves such as 9a forming part of the shutters such as 9. According to the invention, the driving element 9b of the valve a is joined with a certain clearance and with the interposition of 'a spring 9r. In this way, when the valve 9a is entrained in the movement of the driving element 9, the latter has already acquired a certain speed and moreover the air gap is already reduced' so that the load-bearing capacity is approaching its greatest value.
Fig. 5 shows one embodiment of an expansion rod made in accordance with the present invention.
This rod is mounted in a fixed support 2 'As will be seen below it is arranged so that under the effect of an increase in temperature its end 21p approaches the support 2a' that is to say that its free length decreases. The rod shown schematically in fig.l and 8 is actually assumed to be arranged such that its free part is shortened .sub the effect of an increase in temperature.
According to the invention, the rod comprises a part of relatively high mechanical strength and consisting of austenitic steel. The invention provides in particular to use
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
be a steel of the following approximate composition: Iron 73 - Silicon 0.5 Manganese 0.2 Carbon 0.12 Copper 0.18 - Nickel 8 - Chromium 18.
The invention provides for the use of an austenitic steel tube 21a, the coefficient of expansion of which is relatively high, and to have the silica 21b, the coefficient of which is relatively small, inside thereof.
