BREVET D'INVENTION.

2 partie c correspondantà l'autre branche vient s'appliquer.
par une portion courbe appropriée, lorsque la queue c1 est enfoncée d'une quantité elle-même appropriée dans cette ou- verture et au contact, ou au voisinage, de l'arête a3 de la paroi a 2 de ladite ouverture, sur le tube à serrer, préala- blement mis en place sur le mors fixe;

PATENT. "Improvements made to collets, in particular to those for clamping parts of circular or similar cross-section
The invention relates to collets; and it concerns more specifically (because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest), but not exclusively, among these pinching those to clamp parts of circular or similar section.
Its aim is, above all, to make these clamps such that they allow to clamp, with great speed, parts of different sections and dimensions.
It mainly consists in making the clamps of the kind in question understand a fixed jaw and a movable jaw provided with a shank capable of being moved, in a plane substantially perpendicular to the axis of the part to be clamped. , under the action of a relatively

low amplitude (caused for example by a screw), while pivoting around an appropriate stop (for example an edge) which the fixed jaw comprises, in the direction in which the movable jaw comes to rest said part on the fixed jaw ,
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions, which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below,
It relates more particularly to a certain mode of application (that where it is applied to the clamping of parts of circular section or the like), as well as certain embodiments (those which will be indicated below), of said arrangements; and it relates more particularly still, and this as new industrial products, to the pliers of the type in question comprising the application of these same provisions, to the special elements and tools specific to their establishment, as well as to installations using similar pliers.
And it can, in any event, be clearly understood with the aid of the additional description which follows as well as the appended drawing, which supplement and drawing are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 included in this drawing show, respectively in partial elevation (part broken away and part cut), in partial plan and in end view, a collet established in accordance with the invention.
According to the invention, and more especially according to its modes of application, as well as those of the embodiments of its various parts, to which it appears that preference should be given, proposing to to establish a collet, for example to clamp a tube, the procedure is as follows, or similar.
We constitute this clamp: by a fixed jaw a, affecting the / shape of a kind @
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
dihedral in which the tube b to be clamped can rest and supported by a bar a1 which this jaw is integral with, bar substantially perpendicular to the middle of the edge of said dihedral, arranged as shown and which will be secured, or not, according to use that we want to make of the clamp, to a support, in which the bar is formed, crossing it, in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the tube to be clamped, an opening a10 of rectangular section, the wall of which is end a2 opposite to the fixed jaw a, is inclined - assuming that fig,
1 shows the gripper in a vertical plane and that the fixed jaw is forward - from top to bottom and front to back; by a movable jaw c constituted by a part having the shape of a kind of L, part c1 corresponding to one of the branches - part c1 which will be referred to below as "tail" of the movable jaw - is of rectangular section and is suitable for being engaged freely, with the least possible lateral play, in the opening a10, and whose
2 part c corresponding to the other branch is applied.
by an appropriate curved portion, when the shank c1 is driven by an amount which is itself suitable in this opening and in contact with, or in the vicinity of, the edge a3 of the wall a 2 of said opening, on the tube to be tightened, previously placed on the fixed jaw;
and by a suitable means to allow, once the movable jaw c in place as we have just explained, to fix it. position of the shank c1 of said movable jaw in contact
3. of the edge a, rounded or not, which means can be constituted for example as shown in the drawing, that is to say by using a threaded rod d engaged in an internal thread, in the plane of the movable jaw, in the bar! it and arranged so that, by actuating one of its ends, the other end can be brought into contact with the face of the shank c1 located inside
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
laughing at 1'L above,
The apparatus being thus established,
to use it, we begin by lifting the jaw uobile c sufficiently to be able to engage the part to be clamped b between the fixed jaw and the movable jaw; said part is placed on the fixed jaw, and the movable jaw c is allowed to fall on said part, so that, if the threaded rod d has been previously engaged sufficiently far in the bar a1 for said shank to be able to fit.
in said opening with little play between the ar-
3 te a and the corresponding end of the threaded rod, the movable jaw c will be in a position very close to that in which it ensures the tightening, and it will suffice, for this tightening to be obtained, to screw the said rod very little so that said shank c1, by pivoting around ridge a3, causes part c2 of the movable jaw to apply to the tube; the tightening being therefore, retort as we see, obtained with the greatest rapidity.
Such a clamp can advantageously be used retort support clamp, in particular for mounting and fixing laboratory apparatus, flasks, tubes, refrigerants, etc.
As goes without saying, and as is moreover already apparent from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts. , having more especially been. indicated, it embraces, on the contrary, all the variants.
