<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Process for mixing sludge using compressed air.
The object of the present invention is to make the mixing of the sludge by means of compressed air simpler and more perfect. Sludge silos or supply silos for mixers to which the sludge is brought by a pumping mechanism, most often have a conical shape or else a bottom inclined on one side only to which a certain number end. of compressed air supply pipes. These pipes are connected by means of a common line to a compressor, while the nozzles can heretofore be closed individually or in groups.
The mixture is treated in such a way that the compressed air produced by the compressor is injected permanently or with interruptions of several hours each time during

.a fairly long time, either simultaneously in all the mixers, or alternately in some mixers. With this operation, it is necessary to constantly operate the valves according to a prescribed organization of the work, so that special personnel are required for this, in addition to still requiring special attention from the personnel.
The present invention obviates these drawbacks by the fact that the mixing air is sent to the mixers by means of the use of an interposed wind box, the air being supplied each time for only a short time, in the form of 'a pressure pulse. For this purpose, air pulses are produced which are separated by the fact that valves are inserted in the connecting pipe between the compressed air reservoir mounted on the compressor and the mixers, which are closed as long as the air supply. pressure in the pipe has not reached a determined maximum pressure, for example four atmospheres.
After this pressure is reached, the valves open and allow the accumulated air in the compressed air tank to flow into the mixers) as soon as the pressure in the line has dropped to a determined minimum value, for example two atmospheres, the valves close again and the play starts again. The individual compressed air pulses simultaneously drive the control unit. During this operation, pressure pulses occur which are used to effect, by means of a control, a piston or the like, a change in the connection of the inlet pipes of the pump. compressed air to the mixers, so that with each pressure pulse the control unit rotates by a certain amount.
The control unit establishes, during this rotation, the communication between the compressed air line and the different mixers one after the other, so that the mixing and also the advancement to the different mixers are adjust automatically without the need for monitoring. @

Another advantage of this process is that the air impulses which occur cause in the mixers a much more intensive mixing than could heretofore be obtained in constantly operating mixers. with a uniform passage. At each commencement of the mixing period there is an agitation of the sludge as is not produced in any other kind of mixing.
The compressor of the installation can also be very small because it is the content of the air tank which alone determines the quality of the mixture. When the compressor is smaller, the time for filling the air tank is only increased, but the mixing effect at each operation always remains the same.
While heretofore, with an always uniform air passage, the compressor had to be of a certain size, in order to produce a sufficient mixture, it can currently be smaller. Whereas previously to save motive power, the large compressor was run a number of times a day for some time, which constantly required service personnel, the compressor can now be made small enough that the time it takes to fill the air tank eliminates
