BREVET D'INVENTION.

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

PATENT.
"Improvements made to explosion engines".
The invention relates to explosion engines.
Its main purpose is to make said engines such that the combustion of the feed mixture has less tendency to occur in the breaking form referred to as 'detonation', a breaking form which it affects under certain conditions. and which presents serious drawbacks.
It consists, mainly, in arranging in such a way the motors of the kind in question that the propagation of the inflammation takes place along at least one sinuous path and successively and progressively sweeps the various points of the chamber of explosion.
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions, which are preferably used at the same time, and which will be discussed more explicitly below.
It specifically targets certain modes
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
implementation of said provisions; it targets more particularly, and this as new industrial products, the engines of the type in question comprising the application of these same provisions, the special elements and tools specific, either to their establishment or to the conversion of engines already existing in others comprising application of these same provisions, as well as installations, fixed or mobile, comprising similar engines.
And it can, in any event, be well understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the appended drawing, which supplement and drawing are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
Figs. 1 and 2 of this drawing show, in the form of a diagram, respectively in axial section according to 1-1 fig.
2 and in section according to 2-2 fig. 1, the upper part of a cylinder-piston assembly for explosive engines established in accordance with a first embodiment of the invention in a diagram,
EMI2.1
Lçs fig. r @ nt, in the form of a diagram, Figs. p o rentg in diagram form, and respectively in axial section according to 3-3 fig. 4 and in section according to 4-4 fig. 3, the upper portion of a cylinder-piston assembly for an explosive engine constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention.
According to the invention, and more especially according to those of the embodiments of its various parts to which it seems that preference should be given, assuming that one wishes to establish a single cylinder motor for example with explosions, we go about it as follows, or
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
analogous way.
As regards, first of all, the engine elements other than the walls limiting the explosion chamber, they are formed in any suitable usual manner, and then concerning the walls delimiting the explosion chamber, they are formed. arranges them in such a way that the propagation of the ignition occurs along at least one sinuous path and successively and progressively sweeps the various points of the explosion chamber.
For this purpose, and according to the invention, the walls delimiting the explosion chamber, in particular at least one of the bottoms a and b respectively of the cylinder and of the piston, are provided with specific devices. in guiding the ignition of the mixture, said devices possibly consisting either of at least one partition (fig.
1 and 2), of suitable height carried by the piston and clean, when the piston is at its top dead center, to be created, from the point where the spark occurs between the electrodes of the spark plug d, at least one sort of sinuous corridor which is forced to follow the jet of flame originating at the location of the spark, 1 + author of said partition being, at each point, equal (to the necessary clearance, of the order of millimeter, close) to the free height existing, at this point, between the bottom of the cylinder and the bottom of the piston, when the latter is at top dead center, or in a system consisting of:
on the one hand, by at least one partition c1 (fig. 3 and 4) of height equal to the aforesaid free height increased by a constant quantity, standing parallel to the axis of the cylinder and carried by the bottom of the piston , and, on the other hand or by at least one cell e, of suitable depth, provided in the bottom of the cylinder, cell in
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
which can engage without friction the upper part of the partition c1, or else by at least one second partition f, of equally suitable height, carried by the bottom of the cylinder and such, said partition f, that, when the piston is at its top dead center, the partitions c1 and f are, over part of their height, parallel and as close to each other as machining allows (at a distance, for example, of the order of a millimeter).
It should be noted that this arrangement comprising two co-operating elements makes it possible to maintain the relative tightness of the species of passages that the partitions define in the explosion chamber, during a determined length of the piston stroke.
Advantageously, but not necessarily, the layout of the partitions is given a shape comprising rounded contours and such that the section of each of the species of corridor that the partitions delimit does not show any constriction and grows in crescent. from the electrodes of the spark plug.
As a result, we obtain, in one case as in the others, an engine whose tendency to detonate is much less marked than that of conventional engines, under the same conditions and whose operation is sufficiently obvious to that it is unnecessary to give additional information about it.
As it goes. of itself, and as is already clear from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to those of the embodiments of its various parts which have been more especially indicated; it embraces, on the contrary, all the variants, in particular those where the partitions ± and c1 would be comprised by the cylinder base and the partitions ± and the grooves e would be comprised by the piston.
