<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Coke oven chamber closure.
In closures for coke oven chambers heretofore known in the industry, the pond material is usually forced into a wedge-shaped slot between the oven door and the door frame. The sealing material, usually in the form of a cord made of asbestos and metallic threads, is, upon introduction into the slot, partly compressed from two sides and partly stressed by friction. . As a result, the sealing cord changes more or less cross-section.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
dirty and therefore subject to relatively rapid wear.
The rapid wear of the seal is avoided according to the present invention by the fact that thanks to the particular arrangement of the sealing surfaces on the oven door and on the door frame, the sealing material is as much as possible compressed only, uniformly and over the greater part of its periphery, while there is no frictional stress.
The drawing represents an exemplary embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a front view.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal cup.
In the masonry are arranged the door frames b which are divided along the axis of the free opening of the oven. These door frames can also be formed of several superimposed parts. The shape of the cross section of these frames is conical for the most part, but towards the furnace chamber the shape becomes cylindrical in such a way that at the point of transition an internal step bl is formed extending all around. This step serves as a support for the sealing cord g which has a round cross section.
The door c of the oven is received in the frame b which widens outwards in a cone. The door has a rim c which extends all the way around, forms the mating part of the step b1 and acts with the latter to exert pressure on the sealing ring g. The two sealing surfaces which intervene, on the rim c1 and on the step bl, are rounded in the form of a recessed groove and are therefore adapted to the rounded shape of the periphery of the sealing member g.
When the sealing member is placed between bl and cl,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
it is embraced over the greater part of its periphery in its rounded shape so that only very narrow gaps remain for the adjustment of the position of the door, between the latter and the frame. The fact that the sealing member is thus uniformly embraced ensures that this member is compressed without the shape of its cross section being able to undergo a modification capable of producing destruction.
The pressure is exerted by tightening the screws d which rest on the tabs of the door c and screw into the bridges e. -These bridges are supported on lateral projections of the anchoring posts f. The application pressure of the door c can, however, also be produced in another suitable way. The ends of the bridges e can for example engage in stop openings of the anchor posts f or else screw d can be screwed into the uprights and transmit its pressure to the door by inserting bridges or other suitable components.
