<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
En suite de quoi, on obtient des pistons -- ap- plicables à toutes sortes de machines et moteurs (à explo- sion, à vapeur, etc.) qui peuvent, comme déjà dit, être obtenus bruts d'une façon appropriée quelconque, en métal ou alliage plus ou moins quelconque, avantageusement en choisissant un métal ou alliage léger et .à relativement haute résistance, par exemple en duralumin, alugir, alférium, etc., et en ayant recours comme déjà connu, aux procédés ordinaires de matriçage, en autant de passes qutil est né- cessaire;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Comme il va de soi, et comme il ressort d'ailleurs déjà de ce qui précède, l'invention ne se limite aucunement à celui de ses modes d'application, non plus qu'à ceux des modes de réalisation de ses diverses parties ayant plus spéciale- ment été indiqués ; elle en embrasse, au contraire., toutes les variantes, notamment: celles où la masse de métal, constituée,dans l'exemple choisi, par deux sortes de languettes, et reliée au fond du piston correspondant, serait constituée autre- ment,, par exemple par un cylindre creux concentrique à l'a- xe audit piston, par exemple encore par une sorte de chape d'une pièce avec le fond du piston et qui recevrait l'axe d'articula- tion de la bielle;

"Improvements made to pistons, with oscillating connecting rod for machines, especially those for explosion-proof engines." end The invention relates to pistons., with oscillating connecting rod, for machines; it concerns more specifically (because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest), but not exclusively, among these pistons, those for internal combustion engines.
Its aim, above all, is to make these pistons .. such as they respond, better than hitherto, to the various desiderata of industrial practice,
It mainly consists in making the pistons of the type in question comprise a body and a base to which is connected, in a suitable manner, a mass of metal separated from the internal surface of the wall of said body. and capable of ensuring., by itself., the housing of the hinge pin of the big end.
It consists, apart from this provision
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
principal, in certain other arrangements, which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below, in particular in an additional arrangement - exclusively relating, this one, to the pistons of engines with explosion - consisting, itself, in providing the bottom of the pistons of the type / in question with means such as to promote stirring of the combustible mixture.
It relates more particularly to a certain method of application (that in which it is not applied to the pistons of internal combustion engines) and certain embodiments (those which will be indicated below) of said provisions; and it is aimed more particularly still, and this as new industrial products, the pistons of the type in question comprising the application of these same provisions, the special elements and tools specific to their establishment, as well as the machines ( including internal combustion engines), fixed or mobile, using similar pistons.
And it can, in any event, be well understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the accompanying drawing, which supplement and drawing are, of course, given above all by way of indication. .
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of this drawing show, respectively in schematic axial section along a plane passing through the axis of the housing of the articulation of the connecting rod in schematic axial flow along a plane perpendicular to the previous one and in schematic section following 3-3 fig. 1, a piston established in accordance with a first embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 4 ntre, half in axial section and half in elevation, another piaton established in accordance with another embodiment of the invention.
According to the invention., And more especially according to that of its modes of application, as well as those of the embodiments of its various parts, to which it appears

whether preference should be given, proposing to manufacture a piston, for example for cylinders of internal combustion engines, the procedure is as follows, or analogously.
To manufacture this piston, recourse is had to more or less usual means suitable for making it possible to obtain a blank having the shape and dimensions which one wishes and comprising, on the one hand., A body a, without them. bosses which, ordinarily, are used, once drilled, to mount there the articulation axis of the big end of the piston, and, on the other hand, a bottom b of which are integral, with the manufacture, two kinds of tabs c, symmetrical with respect to the axis of this base and such that, the piston being assumed to be finished, said tabs hang inside said piston, are separated from the side wall of body a and have sufficient dimensions to that it is possible to mount therein, in holes c, the articulation axis of said big end,
which can also be mounted - although this is not essential - in holes has mena, gés in said wall; which blank is @@@@@@@@@ or, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, obtained in a single piece, that is to say the body a and the bottom b being integral with each other, or else, as shown in FIG. 4, obtained in two parts, that is to say the body a and the bottom b being separated from each other, in which case this bottom is attached to the body by any suitable means, by threading, or crimping or soldering, etc., for example, as shown in said FIG.
4 by using a base such that it comprises on the outside, towards its lower edge, a cylindrical shoulder b1, that it be threaded so that it can be screwed into a corresponding thread that has been made in a shoulder. internal cylindrical element g1 provided in the body a little below the upper end of said body, that, once engaged by the lower cover thereof, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
two shoulders b1 and a1 can be applied to one another, preferably by means of a suitable seal d, for example metal-plastic, and that, once in place, it is possible, by any appropriate operation,
crimping the upper edge of said bottom in the kind of annular channel a existing, above the shoulder a1, between said body and said bottom.
As a result, pistons are obtained - applicable to all kinds of machines and engines (explosion, steam, etc.) which can, as already said, be obtained rough in any suitable way, in more or less any metal or alloy, advantageously by choosing a light and relatively high-strength metal or alloy, for example duralumin, alugir, alferium, etc., and by having recourse, as already known, to ordinary forging processes, in as many passes as necessary;
which pistons, once we have drilled the holes c and, if necessary, the holes a, for the passage of the articulation pins of the big ends, and that we have finished these pistons, as Usually, for, once provided with said connecting rods, to be able to be mounted respectively in the cylinders which are to receive them, present, over the other pistons, among other advantages, those which are below.
Seizure almost impossible, the expansion being regular.
Better cooling.
Greater lightness, when the pistons are obtained by stamping, than when they are obtained by casting,. the sections of these can be reduced compared to those of these.
Greater strength under the same manufacturing conditions just mentioned.
Simplicity of work under the same manufacturing conditions.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
And, either one is satisfied to proceed as it was indicated previously, or else, and better, one makes understand, advantageously, to the bottoms of the pistons described - in the case where these are used for engines with ex - plosion - ,. means suitable for making it possible to stir the combustible mixture., which means may be constituted in different ways, for example by kinds of more or less helical blades, carried by said bases and capable of imparting to said mixture a gyration movement.
As goes without saying, and as moreover already emerges from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts having more specially indicated; it embraces, on the contrary., all the variants, in particular: those where the mass of metal, constituted, in the example chosen, by two kinds of tongues, and connected to the bottom of the corresponding piston, would be constituted otherwise, for example by a hollow cylinder concentric to said piston, for example also by a kind of yoke integral with the bottom of the piston and which would receive the hinge pin of the connecting rod;
-and those where said mass of metal, formed in one way or another, would be attached, in any suitable manner, under the bottom of the corresponding piston.
