Abstract
In a first aspect, the invention relates to a computer-implemented method for performing financial audits on the basis of input data relating to a company to be audited, comprising: (a) anticipating a plurality of possible deviations and corresponding risks of a deviation occurring , (b) estimating the predetermined risks, and (c) drawing up a work program for an audit. In particular, the risks are estimated via a valuation on a scale from 0 to 20, on the basis of one or more associated input data. A risk is significant if the valuation is higher than a predefined threshold value. In a further aspect, the invention provides a further computer-implemented system.
Description
The invention is generally related to computer-implemented methods and systems for performing corporate audits.
STATE OF THE ART An audit is an inspection of an organization, with the aim of providing more certainty to the client or third parties. Financial audits, for example, estimate the reliability of financial reporting. The results of an audit are recorded in an audit report.
The auditor's primary task is to identify so-called “material misstatements” and to assess the risk of such misstatements occurring.
Examples of “misstatements” include any potential errors, information that has been withheld, or inappropriate accounting policies. Moreover, such misstatements are considered “material” if they could influence decisions. Misstatements in financial reporting, for example, are considered material if they can reasonably be expected to influence decisions based on the reporting. Deviations can be material by nature and / or by their size.
Incidentally, deviations can arise either from fraud or from errors. If there are deliberate deviations in the financial reporting, it is fraudulent financial reporting. In the other case, there is no fraud.
In a preparatory phase, the auditor attempts to identify all possible material misstatements. Subsequently, an estimate is made of the risk that the deviations will occur. A so-called “significant risk” is an identified and assessed risk of material misstatement that, in the auditor's judgment, requires special consideration during the audit.
The ultimate goal of the audit is to provide “reasonable assurance” that the financial reporting has been presented fairly in all material respects and that it presents a true and fair view, in accordance with applicable regulations.
Audits are therefore not so much aimed at providing absolute certainty.
Typically, work is rather done on the basis of random checks.
In most jurisdictions, audits are mandatory in accordance with applicable (international) standards.
More specifically, reference is made to the “International Standards on Auditing (ISA)”. However, there is always a so-called “audit risk”, namely the chance that a determination from the audit report does not correspond to reality, and in which case the auditor delivers an incorrect audit report.
For example, it is possible that the auditor will reject the annual accounts, while they still provide a true and fair view.
On the other hand, the auditor may approve the financial statements even though they contain material misstatements.
Clearly, the audit risk should be as small as possible.
Hogergenoemd auditrisico is deels steekproefgebonden. The aforementioned audit risk is partly random.
This is because there is a risk that material misstatements will not be detected, because the auditor checks only a sample of the accounts and transactions, not all accounts and transactions.
Another part of the audit risk is non-sample.
This risk may be due to incorrect audit procedures, incorrect timing of such procedures, or possible errors made by the auditor.
It is of course of particular importance to reduce audit risk as much as possible.
In general, the purpose of a financial audit is to conduct an objective and independent investigation of a company's financial reporting.
In this way, audits contribute to the value and credibility of such reports.
Onafhankelijkheid en objectiviteit staan centraal.Independence and objectivity are central.
Only then will regulators, investors, directors and managers be afforded sufficient reasonable assurance that the financial reporting is indeed accurate and complete. Computer-implemented tools to support auditors are known in the art.
Mogelijke risico’s worden voorafgaand geïdentificeerd en ingeschat.US 8 504 452, for example, describes a method and system for generating audit procedures and for reviewing internal controls. Possible risks are identified and estimated in advance.
The present invention contemplates a new, computer-implemented method and a new, computer-implemented system which is even more efficient and which further reduces the aforementioned audit risk. Particular importance is attached to the objectivity with which audits are carried out. Namely, that the final audit report depends to the least possible extent on the user (i.e. the auditor). Another important objective is to provide the auditor with the best possible support when performing audits. Efforts are made to minimize both the mental and physical effort required by the auditor.
OF THE FIGURES Figure 1 is a highly simplified flow diagram illustrating a possible embodiment of the method.
Optioneel omvat de waardering een weging van de invoergegevens a.d.h.v. vooropgestelde wegingsfactoren.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION To this end, the invention provides a computer-implemented method according to claim 1, for performing a financial audit on the basis of input data relating to a company to be audited, which input data comprises at least the financial figures from an annual accounts of the company, and whereby the input data are subdivided according to their nature into different cycles, the method comprising: (a) the prediction per cycle of a multitude of possible deviations and corresponding risks that a deviation will occur, (b) the estimation of the predefined risks based on the input data, and (c) preparing a work program for an audit, which work program includes one or more substantive tests related to risks that are significant. In particular, the risks are estimated via a rating on a scale from 0 to 20, on the basis of one or more associated input data. In addition, a risk is significant if the valuation is higher than a predetermined threshold value. Optionally, the valuation includes a weighting of the input data on the basis of predefined weighting factors.
An important advantage of such ratings on a scale from 0 to 20, and of setting threshold values, is that it makes the audit more objective. Input data is formalized, and a work program / control program for performing the audit is automatically generated. Typically such a work program provides a defined number of checkpoints. It is crucial that the work program is generated objectively through valuations and scores. This does not depend on the auditor. Optionally, the work program includes substantive tests specifying which samples to perform and how. This, as further support for the auditor. In addition, by automatically providing or referring to the most appropriate audit procedures, an attempt is made to reduce the audit risk as much as possible. This concerns both the sample-related part and the non-sample-related part of the audit risk. This provides more certainty with regard to the annual accounts and the final audit report. A risk-based approach that focuses on the significant risks is automatically embedded in the invention. This ensures that the audit can proceed as efficiently and efficiently as possible, based on the work program. The efforts focus on characteristics (eg cycles, control objectives) with a higher / significant risk. The work program has also been specially developed to comply with International Standards on Auditing (ISA), which allows for certification. In a further aspect, the invention provides a further computer-implemented system according to claim 10, suitable for performing the method. Optionally, the system is implemented in a spreadsheet program. Those same benefits can be retaken.

In what follows the invention is described by way of example non-limiting examples and figures illustrating the invention, and which are not intended or should not be construed to limit the scope of the invention. Figure 1 is a highly simplified flow chart illustrating a possible embodiment of the method. The object of the invention is to most efficiently generate a work program (1) that enables the auditor to perform an objective and independent audit. For this purpose, on the one hand, the financial figures of the company are used, namely the annual accounts (2) with the interim balance sheet (3), the profit / loss account (4) and all kinds of explanatory notes. On the other hand, the environment (5) of the company is also taken into account, for example through sector averages and trends. The financial figures are broken down into different cycles (6), eg purchases, sales, stocks, and the like. Per cycle (6) a multitude of possible deviations is presupposed, together with the corresponding risks (7) that such a deviation occurs. Based on the input data (2, 3, 4, 5), an estimate (8) can then be made of these risks (7). The present invention objectifies this estimate (8). This is based on both the financial figures (2, 3, 4) of the company and data relating to the environment (5) in which this company operates (e.g. the type of sector, the suppliers, the customers, the technology). The risks (7) are estimated via a test (9), with a rating on a scale from 0 to 20. A significant risk (10) is a risk for which the stated valuation is higher than a predetermined threshold value.
After the significant risks (10) have been identified, the work program (1) is finally generated.
This provides which substantive tests (11) must be performed, and a required sample size (12). It is believed that the present invention is not limited to the embodiment described above and that some modifications or changes may be added without revaluing the appended claims.
