Description
<EMI ID = 1.1>
The present invention relates to a method and chemical compositions for making ground surfaces ice and snow free. By surfaces in this invention is meant the surfaces that people enter, such as footpaths, driveways, car parks, portals, entrance halls, etc., in concrete or stone or of a different paved surface.
The composition is used in ready to use form, whether or not in the presence of other ingredients that exert an influence on other properties (such as its hygroscopicity, odor, shelf life, etc.).
The composition consists of urea granules, containing 46% nitrogen, and with a diameter between 0.15 mm and 3 mm. The usage dose is between 200 and 400 g per square meter, depending on the thickness of the ice layer. Re-treatment may be necessary for very thick layers to make it ice-free. The product is effective up to a minimum ambient temperature of -15 [deg.] C.
It is common to use road salt (the most commonly used is NaCL or table salt) for defrosting surfaces, both for private use and for example. use on public roads. Other less frequently used liquid products are based on glycols that are released onto the soil.
The road salt has several disadvantages. A first disadvantage is that they are harmful to the grass edges and plant borders. By dissolving the salt in the thawed ice / snow, this moisture runs away to the edges of the surfaces and then comes into contact with the plants: too high a salt concentration can cause them to die or at least inhibit their growth. Splashing and blowing away thawed saline solution can also cause similar damage to the adjacent plant growth. Too high a salt concentration is also harmful to the animal world, just think of earthworms that cannot tolerate these increased concentrations and other soil life.
A second major drawback is road salt on natural stone surfaces (such as blue limestone tiles, sills, border stone, but also marbles, white stone, etc.) can cause permanent stains due to interference with the salts present in these tiles or stones. This results in an aesthetic depreciation that can only be restored by costly interventions. We also get this problem indoors because the salt solution sticks to the feet and is taken inside. Mainly salt stains on carpets, parquet and wooden floors can cause irreversible damage.
A third disadvantage is the corrosion-causing and corrosion-accelerating effect of the road salts. Metal particles in the tiles, stones (which often also occur with natural stones, but also in concrete paving stones and others) start to oxidize very quickly due to these road salts and give rise to stubborn, unaesthetic and difficult to remove rust and oxidation stains.
Even if the road salt comes into contact with other low-protected metals, such as vehicles, structures, ornaments, closures, etc., they cause oxidation stains or corrosion, with all its consequences.
The urea granules, on the other hand, have none of these disadvantages: whether or not in dissolved form they are not harmful to the plants (urea is converted into other absorbable forms of nitrogen for the plants and are therefore a fertilizer, see their large-scale application as fertilizer in agriculture), they do not cause stains on natural stone or other tiles and they are not corrosive.
The glycol solutions, which can also be used as a defrosting agent, have the disadvantage that with insufficient defrosting they themselves become hard and very smooth, after which the surfaces become almost unreachable.
To our surprise, we have now established that the urea granules can also be used perfectly as a thawing agent. These are not used for this application so far.
Indeed, the working principle is analogous to that of the road salt, in particular they will also lower the freezing point of water. The principle is that by adding a soluble substance to a solvent (H2 O), a reduction in the vapor pressure and therefore also a reduction in the freezing point is achieved. This binary system shows a minimum in the melting line (eutectic point). This is the minimum melting temperature for a given system. The eutectic point is of course dependent on both the solvent and the solute. After homogeneous application to the surfaces, the ice or snow at the level of the granules melts into a liquid containing urea, which then causes the surrounding ice or snow to melt further, etc.
With a dosage of 200 to 400 g, a sufficiently rapid effect is achieved to minimum temperatures of -15 [deg.] C. Just as for road salt, thick ice or snow layers may require retreatment. At very low humidity
(drought), the operation can be delayed, just like for road salt, because insufficient contact will then arise between the defrosting agent and the hard, dry ice surfaces.
