WERKWIJZE EN INRICHTING VOOR HET BEPALEN VAX DE HOEK
TUSSCN FACETTEN VAN EEN TRANSPARANT OBJECT.
EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
EMI2.1
geplaatst.

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DETERMINING THE CORNER
BETWEEN FACETS OF A TRANSPARENT OBJECT.
EMI1.1
The invention relates to the determination of the angle between facets of a transparent object bounded by these facets. This transparent object consists of, for example, a gem such as a diamond.
The value of precious stones, such as diamonds, is largely determined by their shape. Thus, it is important that the facets should be mutually mutated
EMI1.2
show a correct orientation and that a cut gem is obtained which is preferably almost perfectly symmetrical. The mutual position of their facets largely determines the sparkle of the gem.
To date, however, it is very difficult to determine the mutual angles of their facets during the gemstone cutting. This is because the gemstone must be clamped in a cutting tool such that the orientation of the Facets of the gemstone that are on the side of the cutting tool cannot be
EMI1.3
measured without removing the gem from the sharpener. However, when the gemstone is removed from the cutting tongs to perform such a measurement. it is practically this back in exactly the same position in k) it is impossible to use cutting pliers.

placed. By comparing the shadow image with measurement lines displayed on the screen, the angle between the facet and a reference plane is measured. c
7. Scanner systems also use the shadow image of a gemstone to perform a measurement. The shadow image is projected onto a camera through a lens. The gem is then rotated in small discrete steps around CCI1 axis.
An image of the object is recorded for each position using a computer. On the basis of these measurements it is determined where the facets are and the angles thereof can be determined with respect to a reference surface.
Consequently, these techniques do not allow to determine the hocking between the facets of a precious stone mounted in a grinder. Moreover, the angles between the facets can only be determined with a low accuracy.
The invention seeks to remedy these disadvantages by proposing a device and a method which allow the hocks to be accurately measured.

The invention relates generally to a method for measuring the angles between the facets of a transparent object such as a gem, for example a diamond, with the aid of a light beam.
Figures 1 to 3 show a diamond in the shape of a diamond 1. This brilliant shows successively a table zone 2, a crown zone 3. a rounded zone 4 and a pavilion zone 5. The table zone 2 comprises a facet 6 that forms a so-called table surface. The table zone 2 is bounded laterally by facets of the crown zone 3 which connects to the touring zone 4. The pavilion zone 5 has a
EMI5.1
number of facets that converge on the side of the brilliant 1 on the tarcl /, z: D zDt> in a point. The facets of the pavilion zone 5 are called pavilion facets 7. The brilliance of an avi br'ijatit is determined in principle by the orientation of these pavilion facets 7 relative to the table surface 6.
When the pavilion facet 7 is cut during the diamond I grinding, it is, as shown in Fig. 5, on the side of the table. plane 6
EMI5.2
mounted in a cap 8 of a grinder not shown in the figures. In addition, it is not possible to measure the orientation of the table surface 6 with the traditional measuring techniques when the diamond 1 is mounted in a cutting tool.
In the method according to the invention, the orientation of TV facets, the surface of which is at least partially free and therefore not completely protected by the cap 8, is measured. This is done by dropping a light beam on each of these facets and measuring the angle at which this light beam is reflected.
In order to determine the orientation of the table surface 6, this light beam is incident on a first of the facets whose orientation has been determined such that
EMI5.3
that this light beam penetrates the object and is reflected on the table surface 6. This light beam then leaves the object along the two-faceted orientation, which has also been measured. The angle of the incident el1 and the outgoing light beam with respect to the respective facet is hereby determined.
Thus, from the orientation of the two facets and from the corners of whose light beam reflected on the table surface with respect to these facets, as well as from the angular displacement of the light beam when determining the orientable of these facets, the orientation of the table area can be calculated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Preferably, the light source that generates said light beam is mounted via a so-called angle encoder such that the angular displacement of the light beam, in order to make it incident on the various facets, is easy to determine.
This light source is preferably formed by an autocollimator known per se. Figure 4 schematically shows the operating principle of an autocollimator. It comprises a light source 10, the light of which is incident via a condenser lens 11 onto a semi-permeable mirror 12 which forms an angle of 45 with the axis 13 of the condenser lens 11.
The light from the light source 10 is switched con through this mirror 2

[5.When this light beam 15 is incident on a plane 16 which is perpendicular to the axis 17 of the object lens 14, this light beam 15 is reflected perpendicularly to the object lens 14 and is incident on the OCLlar via the semi-permeable mirror 12] 8 that is at the focal point of the object lens 14. A mark 24 is provided in the eyepiece 18 at this position.

on the axis 17 and an angle a with the perpendicular plane 16 the reflected light beam 20 reflected on the plane onto the object lens 14 under a hock 2a. This reflected light beam 20 is thus focused on the eyepiece 18 at a distance from said mark 24. In order to make this position visible on the eyepiece 18, a so-called cross-wire 21 is provided between the condenser lens 11 and the semi-permeable mirror 12, of which an image is thus provided is formed on the eyepiece after reflection of the light beam on the plane 19.
The distance d between said mark 24 and the formed image of the cross-thread 21 is proportional to the angle r 1.
Preferably, said eyepiece 18 is replaced by a camera such that it is possible to display the formed image on a screen and process Lc with a computer.
Thus, with the aid of such an autocollimator, the hock which makes a plane with the axis 17 of the objective lens 14, or m. A. W. with the longitudinal axis of the autocollimator.

Figures 5 to 7 schematically show three positics of an autocollimator 22 for the measurement of the orientations of the facets of a transparent object 1 with facets 7 and 9 attached in a cap 8 of a grinder.
The autocollimator 22 is rotatably mounted via an arm not shown in the figures relative to a rotation axis, the extension of which at
EMI7.1
preferably cutting the diamond 1. it is possible to rotate the autocollimator II ID with respect to this axis of rotation to cause the light beam 15, which is generated by the autocollimator 22, to fall on the facet 7 or 9 of the object 1. The plane in which the light beam 15 can thus be rotated together with the autocollimalor 22 is called the light plane.
In a first position of the autocollimator 22. as shown in Figure 5, the light beam 15 is incident on a first facet 7 in order to determine its orientation. The light beam 20 directly reflected by this facet 7 forms part 23 of said cross-wire 21 on the eyepiece 18 which is formed by a camera. The observed image is then displayed on a computer screen 25, as shown schematically in Figure 5. Hereby the image 23 of the cross thread is located

21 at a horizontal distance A and at a vertical distance B from said mark point. These distances A and B are therefore proportional to the angle that the facet 7 makes with two orthogonal lines which lie in a plane perpendicular to the incident 15.
Thus, from these distances A and B, the orientation of the facet 7 with respect to said light plane can be calculated via triangular geometry known in the art.
Next, as shown in Figure 6, the autocollimator 22 is rotated in the light branch through an angle β to a second position where the light beam 15 is incident on said facet 7 such that this light beam is reflected internally in the object 1 by a facet 6, which not visible because it is in the cap 8

is located. This last facet 6 forms, for example, the table surface of a brilliant.
The aidus-reflected light beam 20 then leaves the object 1 via the facet 9 which connects to the said facet 7. The outgoing light beam 20 and another orientation are herein shown. in that case the incoming light beam 15 as a result of the refraction of the light beam upon entering and upon leaving the object 1 and as a result of the internal reflection

on the facet 6. Thus the orientation of a virtual v) perpendicular to the output light beam 20 is measured with the aid of the auto-simulator 22.
The orientation of this virtual is determined by the horizontal distance A 'and the vertical ak distance B' between the image 23 'of the cross-thread 21 and the mark 24 displayed on the screen 25.
In order to determine the orientation of the facet 9, the autocollimator 22 is rotated from the second position to a third position over an angle # so that the light beam 15 from the autocollimator 22 is incident on this facet 9, as shown in Figure 7. The orientation of the facet The facet 9 is determined in an analogous way to that of the facet 7. On the screen 25, the orientation of the facet 9 is thus represented by the distances A "and B" of the image 23 "of the cross-thread 21 to the mark 24.
The orientation of the invisible facet 6 of the object 1, or m. A. W. of the table surface 6, is then calculated on the basis of the orientation of said virtual surface, the refractive index of the object 1, the orientation of the facets 7 and 9 measured 3 t \\ ec and the displacement p and # of the autocollimator 22. Based on the angle between these facets is then determined for the orientation of the invisible facet 6 and for the two facets 7 and 9.
Notwithstanding the description of the method according to the invention, with reference to figures 5 to 7, a ccrstc, a second and a third position of the autocollimator 22, it is clear that these positions can also be in any order be used in the method according to the invention.
In addition, it is not necessary that the light beam! 5 on multiple facets of the object 1. For example, it is possible to allow the light beam 15 to fall on the same facet in three different orientations. For each of these orientations of the light beam, the orientation of the reflected beam is measured.
At a first orientation of the light beam, it is incident on a visible facet of the object 1 and the orientation of this facet is determined on the basis of the orientation of the light beam 20 reflected on this facet.

A third orientation of the incoming light beam 15 is chosen such that the light beam is reflected internally in the object 1 at the above-mentioned

first invisible facet and on a second invisible facet. The orientation of this light beam is measured when leaving the object 1 via the visible facet.
Thus, the orientation of the second invisible facet is calculated from the orientation of the first invisible facet, the orientation of the incoming and outgoing light beams, and the orientation of the visible facet.
Next a theoretical calculation is made for it
EMI9.3
determining the angles between two visible facets and an invisible facet object 1 based on the measurements made with the autocollimator 22 for the three positions crvan shown in Figures 5 to 7.
It is assumed that the orientation of each facet is determined by two angles. This is shown schematically in Figure 8, where a
EMI9.4
orthogonal xyz and a plane V are V intersects the x-axis li the point A, the y-axis in the point B and the z-axis in the point C. It is further assumed that said light plane in which the incoming light beam 15 is coincident with the plane formed by the x-axis and the y-axis. Thus, the z-axis is parallel to the axis of rotation about which the autocollimator 22 can be rotated.
The orientation of the plane V is then determined by a first angle α and a
EMI9.5
second angle ss, where a is the angle between the x-axis and the perpendicular line OD on the line AB and where ss is the angle of inclination of the plane V with respect to the light plane xy. The line AB coincides with the intersection between the plane V and the light plane xy.
The angles a and ss correspond to the values measured with the autocollimator 22. These are in particular proportional to the position of the image 23 of the cross-thread 21 relative to the mark 24 when with the autocollimator 22 the orientation of the plane V is measured.

Thus, when two pavilion facets 7 and 9 of a brilliant frame are given with the autocallimator the orientation is given by the hucken an assembly fixed with the brilliant, the cosine of the angle between these pavilion facets 7 and 9 is equal cos (, tg ss). . + 1 cos 0 = 2 2 tg2 1). In order to determine the orientation of the invisible or, therefore, table surface 6, the orientation of the light beam in the object 1 is first calculated. Here, the plane 16, which is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the autocollil, and consequently to the incident light beam 15, is determined by the ic ID

Angles a. Angles a3 and ss3 determine the orientation of the above virtual plane.
In figure 9 the table area 6 and two Cacet faces 7 and 9 of a transparent object 1 are schematically shown in two dimensions. Said plane 16 which is perpendicular to the incident light beam 15 and is shown schematically in broken line.
The main light beam 20 is represented by a vector, the light beam of the light beam on the table surface 6 is represented by. The vectors N1 and N2 form the normal on the facet surface 7 and the facet surface 9, respectively.
Thus the orientation of the table surface 6 is determined by the normal

where 11 is the refractive index for the object in question, this ZD refractive index is, for example, equal to n = 2. On the basis of the orientation of the outgoing light beam perpendicular to said virtual one can determine in an analogous manner the vector T2 corresponding to the light beam reflected on the table surface 6.
The cosine of the angle 823, the vector U representing the outgoing light beam 20 and the normal N2 on the pavilion facet 9 is obtained by scalarally calculating these vectors. Consequently, = U. or = sinss2. .

The angle between the pavilion area 6 and the facet surfaces 7 and 9 can therefore be calculated using known calculation methods.

These angles are calculated from the angular displacement p and / or / of the incident beam 15 and in the respective distances A and B, A 'and B' or A "and B" which are read on the screen 25 of the autocollimator 22.
The above theoretical calculation was given as an example for a measurement in which the object has two visible facets 7 and 9 and an invisible facet 6. It goes without saying that this calculation can be adjusted without problems for other situations, for example when the light source is used.

allow multiple orientations to fall on one facet to determine the orientation of other facets of the object.
The invention is of course in no way limited to the embodiments of the method and the device according to the invention described above and presented in the accompanying figures. For example, the autocollimator can be replaced by a light source that generates a laser beam, the orientation of the different reflections of the laser beam being then measured to determine the orientation of an invisible facet of the transparent object.
Nor is it necessary for the angles p and # to be in the same plane
EMI13.3
The light source, or the autocollimator, may be movable in accordance with one or more translations or rotations in order to cause the light beam to fall on a facet of the object. One or more sensors or encoders can then be provided for measuring the displacement of the light source or of the light beam.
All kinds of techniques can be used to measure the orientation of the input and the light source beams. The use of an autocollimator for this was only given as an example.
The method according to the invention can be applied both to fully ground gemstones and to partially grounded gemstones or semi-precious stones.
