<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

RECIPIENT
The invention relates to a container, in particular a drinking glass, comprising a first portion, provided with an opening through which a solid or a liquid can be inserted or removed in the container, and a second portion for storing a coolant and wherein the first and second part are separated from each other by a wall that is heat-conducting.
Such a container is known from the French user certificate No. 2 680 665. With the known container, the second part is arranged in the bottom of the container and thus forms a totally enclosed space where a coolant is permanently enclosed. Before using the known container, it must first be stored in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator for a period of time in order to allow the coolant to freeze. The liquid or solid to be consumed can then be introduced into the first part. Because the container is cold, the introduced liquid will cool down and itself remain cold for a certain time, which is usually sufficient for consuming the liquid or solid applied in the first part.
Thus, it is not necessary to place ice cubes that melt in the liquid or solid and melt water is prevented from mixing with the substance applied in the first portion.
A disadvantage of the known container is that its manufacture is cumbersome, which makes it expensive and is not suitable as a consumer item. Moreover, the use of a closed second part has as a consequence that the stresses which arise during the repeated cooling and heating up are only absorbed by the recipient, which can lead to breakage.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention has for its object to manufacture a container that is easier to produce and is better suited to absorbing the stresses created during cooling and heating up.
To this end, a container according to the invention is characterized in that the second part is provided with a further opening for introducing and removing the coolant. By opening the second part, a shape is obtained which in fact consists of two open receptacles which are connected to each other through their common wall. Manufacturing open sections is clearly easier than manufacturing a closed section.
Moreover, it is not necessary to apply the cooling liquid during the manufacture of the container and to enclose it in the second part, since the further opening offers the possibility of repeatedly applying the cooling medium. Furthermore, an open structure is much more suitable for absorbing stresses that arise during heating and cooling of the coolant.
A first preferred embodiment of a container according to the invention is characterized in that the first and second part have substantially the same dimension. A stable recipient is hereby obtained.
A second preferred embodiment of a container according to the invention is characterized in that the first and second part extend symmetrically with respect to said wall and said opening and further opening are arranged at the respective ends. A symmetrical construction increases the stability of the container and allows easy manufacture.
The first and the second part preferably have a conical shape. Moreover, such a shape is attractive.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Advantageously, the inner wall of the second part has a serrated surface. The serrated surface has the advantage that a greater friction is hereby exerted on the frozen coolant.
The invention will now be further elucidated with reference to the exemplary embodiments shown in the drawing. In the drawing: figure 1 shows a first embodiment of a container according to the invention; figure 2 shows a detailed view of the wall between first and second part; and figures 3 and 4 show further exemplary embodiments of a container according to the invention.
In the drawing, the same reference numeral is assigned to the same or analogous element.
For the sake of simplicity, the further description will be limited to a drinking glass as a preferred embodiment of a container according to the invention. It will be understood that the invention is not limited to drinking glasses but also extends to other containers, such as trays for dishes served cold or for other substances to be kept cold while presented.
A container according to the invention and as shown in the drawing comprises a first 1 and a second 2 part which are separated from each other by a common wall 3. The container is preferably made of glass, because this is customary for drinking glasses, but other materials such as porcelain, plastic or clay can also be used. The drinking glass can be made of clear glass, frosted glass or colored glass.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The first part is provided for storing the liquid to be drunk or other solids that may or may not be consumed, such as food. To this end, the first part comprises an opening 4, preferably arranged at the top through which the liquid is poured. The opening is provided with an edge 6 against which the user places his lips when he wishes to consume the content and thus remove it from the drinking glass.
The second part is provided for storing a coolant such as ice. The second part has a further opening 5 through which the coolant is introduced and removed. In this way, coolant and contents of the first portion are separated from each other and the melted ice cannot mix with the contents of the first portion.
The wall 3 is preferably manufactured from the same material as the rest of the container, but it is also possible to manufacture it from a different material and then connect the first and second part together by means of that wall. The wall must be heat-conducting so as to divert the heat from the substance present in the first part to the second part and thus to the coolant. When glass or porcelain is chosen as the material, the wall is preferably not too thick so as not to prevent heat conduction. The wall thickness is preferably 2 to 5 mm.
When using the container according to the invention, the user will fill the second part with water or another liquid by using the further opening 5. The container thus filled is then placed in a freezer compartment so that the coolant can freeze. Once the coolant is frozen, the container can be used to pour a drink or something else in the first part. The heat from the poured then flows to it
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
colder coolant so that the poured out can cool down and stay cold during the time the user consumes it.
Instead of filling the second part with water, which is subsequently frozen in a freezer compartment, it is also possible to fill that second part with ice, which was preferably ground beforehand.
In this way the glass can be reused faster.
Preferably, a further dish 7 is provided which can be placed under the container and collects the melting coolant.
Because the second part is open, the expansion of the coolant that occurs during freezing can be absorbed, without this causing stresses in the material of the container and thus leading to damage.
In the embodiment according to Figure 1, the receptacle is formed by two conical sections which are end-to-end. The first and second parts are preferably symmetrical with respect to each other, which benefits the stability and the fabrication.
Moreover, such a symmetrical structure offers the advantage that the content of the first and second part is the same, so that the cooling space is adapted to the space to be cooled.
Figure 3 shows a cylindrical shape and Figure 4 a cubic shape.
The first and second part preferably have the same dimension, which is favorable from the point of view of manufacturing technology and whereby the volumes of first and second part are matched to each other. It is also favorable that the first and second part extend symmetrically with respect to the wall 3. This improves stability and ensures that the opening 4 and further opening 5 are located at the respective ends of the drinking glass.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
A cylindrical or conical shape is also preferred because of the fact that this shape is suitable for absorbing stresses that are induced in the material by cooling and heating in each case.
Advantageously, the inner wall of the second part has a serrated surface. This creates a greater friction between the frozen coolant and the wall, so that the frozen coolant is better retained in the second part. The serrated inner wall can be applied by grinding the wall of the glass. If the container is made of plastic, the serrated wall can be made by extrusion or injection molding.
