<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Method for stacking containers and device applying this method.
The present invention relates to a method and device for stacking containers, with the intention of packaging them in single or multiple layers.
It is known that when packaging containers, the latter are collected on a conveyor belt on which successively rows of containers are arranged, which are then transported per row in a direction transverse to this conveyor belt to a location that expires on the packaging machine.
This way of working is very effective when the containers to be treated have a horizontal cross-section which has at least one straight wall so that when these packages are brought from the conveyor belt between two guides, they are brought into a specific position between these guides and are brought into this position as they cannot rotate in the horizontal plane.
However, it is different if these receptacles have a horizontal cross-section which is such that rotation in the horizontal plane between two guides is possible. Such packages are formed, for example, by containers whose horizontal cross-section has an oval or other shape that allows a container to take more than one position when it is placed between two guides.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Indeed, the major drawback associated with these known devices is that oval or other packages of the aforementioned kind can rotate side by side and relative to each other between the aforementioned guides, resulting in a change in the length of the row causing problems with moving such a row of containers.
This rotation is all the more possible since empty containers are generally involved with a very small weight, as is the case with empty plastic containers.
It has already been proposed, inter alia, to avoid the aforementioned disadvantages, to count the containers arranged in a row, for example by means of a photocell, but this has the disadvantage that when the device for stacking or the like is subjected to specific times vibrations, for example caused by passing traffic or the like, very often incorrect counts occur.
Another solution that has already been given to the aforementioned problem is that the products are allowed to buffer and that if there is no change in the photodetector signal in the row for a certain time, it is assumed that the row may be shifted.
In both cases, however, one regularly obtains rows of containers with a different number of containers.
The disadvantage of this is that the number of containers does not correspond to the predetermined stacking pattern such that at
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
moving a certain row o. a. the containers can block between the ramp and the side guides. It is also obtained that when a row is not completely filled, the containers are torn out of context when moving.
According to the present invention, an attempt will therefore be made to place the containers supplied from a conveyor belt at a certain angle between two guides and to move them under this angle until a row is completely formed.
In this way it is obtained that each row will be of the same size and contain an equally large number of containers, so that sliding of such a row in a direction which is transverse to the sense of displacement of the aforementioned conveyor belt can take place without any problem.
Although the device according to the invention is intended primarily to treat oval receptacles, it can also be used advantageously for other forms of receptacles, such as for instance receptacles with a trapezoidal cross-section.
Hereby these trapezoidal receptacles with their parallel bases can be moved parallel to each other in the machine, with in a row recipients whose large bases of the trapezoidal shapes are directed to the right and in the next row of receptacles whose large bases of the trapezoidal shapes are directed to the left etc., such that the receptacles of the different rows can fit together with the sides of the trapezoidal shapes of the receptacles.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Such trapezoidal receptacles can also be displaced with their bases in line with each other, the receptacles placed next to each other in the same row having been rotated alternately through 180 degrees, such that the sides of the trapezoidal receptacles abut each other.
The method according to the invention showing the aforementioned and other advantages consists in that the containers to be stacked are positioned one after the other; that the containers are moved further to form a row of containers with a maximum stability of these containers; and transversely moving each row of containers onto a stacking plate or the like.
This method will preferably consist of feeding the containers to be stacked one after the other; these recipients are then correctly positioned by rotating them; these containers abutting one another in the same row.
The present invention also relates to a device which applies the aforementioned method, wherein this device consists essentially of a conveyor belt for supplying containers with guides between which the containers are placed in order to form a row; means for moving a formed row of containers to a stacking plate or the like and optionally
EMI4.1
means for retaining the rows of containers, characterized in that a rotation station is provided between the supply of containers and the guides between which the successive rows of containers are formed
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
that allows the containers to be rotated in order to bring them into a suitable position.
With the insight to better demonstrate the characteristics of the invention, a preferred embodiment of a device applying the method according to the invention is described below as an example without any limiting character, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: figure 1 shows a schematically shows a top view of a device according to the invention; Figures 2, 3 and 4 are partial views corresponding to the view of Figure 1, but for successive positions; figure 5 represents the part indicated by F5 in figure 2 on a larger scale; figure 6 represents a diagrammatic line
VI-VI in figure 5; figure 7 represents a view according to line VII-VII in figure 6i figure 8 shows a second position of figure 7.
In the figures, a device is shown for stacking empty containers, which essentially consists of
EMI5.1
a conveyor belt 1; between which the supplied containers 4 can be placed in order to form a row of containers 4; a turning station 5 for positioning the supplied containers; means 6 for horizontally moving the rows of containers 4; possibly means for retaining the rows of containers 4 and finally a stacking plate 8, on which the rows of containers are collected.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The receptacles 4 are supplied in a random position via the conveyor belt 1 to the device according to the invention, wherein they initially end up under the turning station 5.
The latter essentially consists of an inverted U-profile or fork 9 which can be rotated to a desired position by means of a suitable motor 10, wherein this motor 10 is mounted on a horizontal support 11 which itself is mounted on a column 12 , such that the fork 9 is placed in the path of the containers 4 supplied by the conveyor belt 1.
When a container 4 has landed between the flanges 13-14 of the fork 9, the latter will, if necessary, undergo a specific rotation by means of the motor 10, which rotation depends on the shape of the container 4.
As a result, these receptacles 4 will always be rotated in a certain position, namely in that position which makes it possible to obtain a maximum stability in the same row in a suitable manner.
Subsequently, the containers 4 thus rotated are further displaced by means of the conveyor belt 1, wherein a stop plate 15 ensures that the containers 4 are retained between the aforementioned guides 2 and 3, all such that they can no longer rotate.
Subsequently, the means 6 will be moved towards the stacking plate 8, in which case, for example, the guides 2 and 3 are lowered to allow the means 6 to pass and at the same time the means 7,
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
if present, ensure that the containers 6 remain in the same position.
Subsequently, additional rows of containers 4 will be placed in succession on the stacking plate 8, whereafter this plate can optionally be moved in height to provide additional layers, rows of containers on top of each other and finally to transport the latter further for packaging.
It is clear that in this way a very simple device is obtained which makes it possible to turn any kind of containers 4 into their ideal position, which
EMI7.1
of course depends on the shape of these receptacles 4, in order to obtain that a suitable number of receptacles is placed on a single row and this row can thus be retained m. that the containers 4 will not rotate again.
It is clear that the present invention is susceptible to all kinds of changes. For example, the shape of the fork 9 can be adapted to the shape of the containers 4 to be treated; the ends of the flanges 13-14 of the fork 9 directed towards the supplied containers 4 can possibly be funnel-shaped in order to facilitate the introduction of containers 4 between the flanges of the fork 9, etc.
The present invention is thus in no way limited to the embodiment described as an example and shown in the accompanying drawings, but such a device can be realized in all shapes and sizes without departing from the scope of the invention.
