<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
vervormen.

METHOD FOR CONNECTING TWO PLASTIC PROFILES TOGETHER The invention relates to a method for joining two plastic profiles together, wherein each plastic profile is provided with a longitudinal slot.
It is generally known to manufacture all kinds of profiles from plastic. Very strong plastic profiles are obtained with a plastic product made by pultrusion, in which a thermosetting resin is applied by immersion on a continuous web of longitudinal reinforcement fibers, after which reinforcement fiber mats providing transverse reinforcement are applied, followed by a cover with a protective surface film.
The structure thus assembled is brought to the desired shape in a forming mold, the forming mold at the same time forming the function of a curing station for the plastic. The product emerging from the mold is fully cured and can be withdrawn from the device cut to length. With such pultrusion methods, profiles of various shapes can be manufactured, such as U, T, 1, L and 0 profiles which are known under the general trademark name UTILO® profiles of applicant N.V. BEKAERT S.A.
The cured plastic profiles are preferably reinforced with 25 to 75% by weight reinforcement fibers. The weight percentage of reinforcement fibers is based on the total weight of hardened plastic and reinforcement fibers. Namely, it has been found that when incorporating reinforcement fiber of a suitable type in an amount of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
25 to 75% by weight with respect to the total weight, an optimum combination of properties of the plastic profiles is obtained.
The plastic profiles can in principle be manufactured from any type of curable plastic; extremely good results are obtained with plastic profiles from fiber-reinforced thermosetting polymers, in particular from vinyl ester resin and isophthal polyester resin.
For the reinforcement fibers, in principle, all usual types of reinforcement fibers can be used such as glass fiber, nylon fiber, aramid fiber, mineral fiber and many others; Fiberglass is preferred from an economic point of view.
Such very strong, hardened plastic profiles have a large number of advantages. o. v. the classically known steel profiles. They are stainless steel and have a lower specific gravity than steel. They are therefore particularly suitable for some applications.
A disadvantage of these strong, hardened plastic profiles t. o. steel profiles consists in that it is relatively difficult for these plastic profiles to be firmly connected to each other; as this is the case with a welded joint with steel profiles.
In order to form a strong connection between two plastic profiles, it is usually necessary to provide the profiles with holes in order to be able to connect the profiles to each other using bolts and nuts. It is clear that this is a time-consuming operation, where additional means are still required.

The invention has for its object to provide a new method for joining two plastic profiles together.
To this end, the invention proposes in a method of the type mentioned in the preamble that at the location of the connection to be formed in the longitudinal slot of the first plastic profile a first barb-shaped connecting element is arranged, and that in the longitudinal slot of the second plastic profile first cooperating second barb-shaped connecting element and that the second plastic profile with the barb-shaped connecting element placed therein is pressed into the first plastic profile with the barb-shaped connecting element placed therein, so that the two barb-shaped connecting elements hook into each other at the location of the connection to be formed.
The invention will be further elucidated in the following description with reference to the accompanying drawing. In the drawing: Figure 1 shows, in perspective, parts of two plastic profiles to be connected to each other for pressing the two profiles together at the location of the connection to be formed; Figure 2 shows, in perspective, two barb-shaped connecting elements cooperating with each other, and Figure 3 shows a cross-section along the line III-III in Figure 1, wherein the plastic profile is provided with two barb-shaped connecting elements.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Figure 1 shows two plastic profiles 1 and 2, which must be connected to each other by arranging the end 3 of the beam-shaped profile 2 between the legs 4 and 5 of the U-shaped profile 1.
It is clear that the dimensions of the profile 1 are adapted to the dimensions of the profile 2 or the distance between the legs 4 and 5 of the U-shaped profile 1 is substantially equal to the distance between the surfaces 6 and 7 of the beam-shaped profile 2. The two plastic profiles 1 and 2 are provided with a longitudinal slot 8 and 9 at the location of the joint to be formed. Preferably, the longitudinal slots 8 and 9 are provided during the pultrusion of the formed plastic profiles 1 and 2.
Figure 2 shows in perspective two associated barb-shaped connecting elements 10 and 11 for forming
EMI4.1
of the connection between the two plastic profiles 1 and 2. To form the connection between the two plastic profiles 1 and 2, the barb-shaped element 10 is first placed in the longitudinal slot 8 of the plastic profile 1. If desired, this element 10 can be glued into the slot 8. In the same way the second barb-shaped element 11 is placed thereon in the longitudinal slot 9 at the end 3 of the second plastic profile 2 and the end 3 of the second plastic profile 2 with the barb-shaped element 11 placed therein is pressed into the first plastic profile 1 until the both hook-shaped elements 10 and 11 hook into each other.
In order to be able to obtain the above-described connection method for hooking the two barb-shaped elements 10, 11 together; it is necessary that at least one of the two connecting elements 10, 11 can be sufficiently elastic
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
distort. The elements 10, 11 can be manufactured for this purpose from plastic, sheet steel, etc. It is clear that numerous possibilities are known to those skilled in the art here.
Figure 3 shows a cross-section through the end 3 of the profile 2 along the line 111 -111 "in Figure 1, wherein a connecting element 11 is arranged in the two slots 9 of the profile 2 before the end 3 in the profile 1 with the The connecting elements 10 present are pressed in. It is also possible to manufacture all the barb-shaped connecting elements 10, 11 from a hard, non-deformable, non-elastic material, but then to ensure that the necessary elasticity for compressing and hooking the elements 10, 11 is obtained by ensuring that at least the end 3 of the profile 2 has a sufficient elasticity.
