BESCHRIJVING GECOMBINEERDE MENGER-BELUCHTER
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1
EMI3.2
uitlaat aangebracht is. c
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
De uitvinding zal hierna meer in detail beschreven worden aan de hand van enkele niet beperkende uitvoeringsvormen onder verwijzing naar bijgaande schematische tekeningen, waarbij : - figuur la een dwarsdoorsnede van een basis uitvoeringsvorm van een menger/beluchter volgens de uitvinding toont ; - figuur 1 b een (verkleind) bovenaanzicht van de menger/beluchter volgens figuur la toont ; - figuur 2a een dwarsdoorsnede toont van een variante van de menger/beluchter beschreven in figuur l, met weergave van een bijkomend circulatie element ; - figuur 2b een (verkleind) bovenaanzicht van het toestel volgens figuur 2a toont ; - figuur 3 een dwarsdoorsnede van een variante volgens figuur 1 toont, voorzien van een meedraaiend afbuig-lichaam en naar boven en naar onder verlengd pomphuis ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

DESCRIPTION COMBINED MIXER-AERATOR
This invention relates to an apparatus used for aerating and / or mixing water, in particular waste water.
Apparatus for aerating water consisting of a power source that drives a shaft to which a stirring member is mounted are well known, as shown, for example, in Belgian patent 893. 687.
European patent 0 366. 644 describes this type of aerator in a form that it can also be used as a mixer, the power source being mounted on a raft consisting of two floats located one above the other and the lower float being introduced by ballast. can be submerged.
The power source drives a helical impeller that can work in both directions of rotation. This device can be used as a aerator when the upper raft is above the water surface. If the device floats on the upper raft and the direction of rotation is reversed, this device can be used as a mixer.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Due to the double raft and the associated manufacturing and operating costs, there remains an urgent demand for a simpler device that can be used both as a mixer and as a aerator.
Accurate research was carried out into a device that was as simple as possible, starting from a conventional mixer and from the device described in EP 0 366. 644, in which all parts were subjected to a thorough analysis and in which all possible parameters of each part were used during use. were studied.
It has surprisingly been found that such a device can easily be built if the following elements are used correctly: 1. it is necessary for the power source to drive a propellant that can work in both directions of rotation, on the one hand for efficient mixing and on the other for efficient aeration; 2. the impeller must be helical; 3. the impeller must be completely below the water surface; 4. the impeller must be surrounded at least in part by a pump housing or volute, which is also completely below the water surface.
In the text that follows, "mixing" means that water is moved from a higher zone to a deeper zone; "aeration" means that water is dispersed over the water surface or that an air-water mixture is moved from the water surface to a deeper zone.
The invention thus comprises a device which can be used both as a mixer and as a aerator and which comprises a power source which drives a shaft on which a helical impeller is mounted, the power source being able to drive the impeller in both directions of rotation, characterized in that the impeller
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1
is at least partially surrounded by a pump housing, the weir and pump housing being completely below the water surface ZD.
The weir and the pump housing must be at a distance below the water surface such that, depending on the speed of rotation and the dimensions of the weir, the distance between the top of the weir and the water surface on the one hand and the distance between the top of the weir the pump housing and the water surface on the other hand are sufficiently large to prevent air from being sucked in when the impeller works in the mixing function, but allowing the pumped water to be distributed over the water surface or the aspirated air from being driven into the water when the impeller is working in the aeration function .
The proper location of the impeller will be determined by those skilled in the art, who will often also want to take into account the composition of the waste water, the depth of the basin and also the additional components with which the device may be equipped, some of which are described below. .
The correct location will also be determined in function of the use of the device, if one wishes a device that will preferably be used as a mixer, it may be appropriate to place the thrust member as deep as possible in the water, while still allowing sufficient aeration. (in the aeration function), on the other hand when the device is mainly used as a aerator, the impeller will be placed as close to the water surface as possible, on the understanding that sufficient mixing can still take place (in the mixing function).
According to a preferred embodiment the pump housing will be cylindrical with a circular cross-section, whereby it may be advantageous for the top and / or bottom to have an externally widening conical or trumpet-shaped inlet and / or
EMI3.2
outlet is fitted. c
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The top of the pump housing, and also of the widening inlet or outlet if present, must be completely below the water surface.
Although not necessarily, the most beneficial effect is obtained when the volute or pump housing surrounds the weir over its full height.
Furthermore, the pump housing can be provided with stabilizing elements, water-conducting elements and other known parts, wherein these elements can also play a role as structural element of the device.
According to an advantageous embodiment, the device will be equipped with an additional circulation element above the impeller but at least partially below the water surface.
It can consist of a normal plate, possibly corrugated or folded in one way or another. This circulation element will preferably be pivotally positioned on the shaft and be blade-shaped, the shape of the blades giving a movement to the water, in contrast to the movement produced by the impeller.
The circulation element allows the vortex to be broken above the weir; this vortex is created when the impeller works in the mixing direction and therefore pushes water downwards. Since the circulation element first gives the water a small upward movement and then a torus-shaped movement, not only the vortex is broken but also foam and other floating elements - which are usually present on the surface of the water - are sucked in and also sent downwards with the water circulation.
The circulation element will preferably be placed close to the water surface, which also prevents air from being sucked into the water during the mixing movement.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
To improve the flow of the water it may be advantageous to equip the device with a deflecting body which will preferably be conical. This deflection body will preferably be attached to the device near or just above the water surface.
It can be attached to the shaft if it is allowed to turn, but the deflecting body can also be fixed to a structural element.
The power source can be placed both above the water surface and under water. The power source can be suspended from a structure above the water surface or can be carried by floats. If the power source is supported by one or more floats, it is best to prevent the floats from influencing the movement of the water caused by the impeller.
The invention will be described in more detail below with reference to a few non-limiting embodiments with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which: figure la shows a cross-section of a basic embodiment of a mixer / aerator according to the invention; figure 1b shows a (reduced) top view of the mixer / aerator according to figure la; figure 2a shows a cross-section of a variant of the mixer / aerator described in figure 1, with representation of an additional circulation element; figure 2b shows a (reduced) top view of the device according to figure 2a; figure 3 shows a cross-section of a variant according to figure 1, provided with a co-rotating deflecting body and pump housing extended up and down;
figure 4a and figure 4b show a schematic cross-section of a further embodiment according to the invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
With reference to the drawings, figure 1a schematically shows a power source 1, placed on a support plate 2. The power source 1 drives a shaft 3 on which a propeller 5 is mounted.
The power source 1 can cause the impeller 5 to work in both directions of rotation. The impeller 5 consists of a double-threaded screw 6 with variable diameter between the bottom 7 and the top 8. The distance between the water surface 9 and the top 8 is determined in such a way that when water moves upward a sufficient distribution of water takes place above the water surface and that in the mixing function with downward movement no air is sucked into the water.
A cylindrical pump housing 4 is arranged around the weir member 5 and at the full height of this member. Support plate 2 of power source 1 is connected by connecting elements 11 to three floats 12, which are placed at a mutual angle of 120 (relative to their center point) from each other and keep the device floating.
The pump housing 4 is in solidarity with the connecting plates 11, so that the device forms a solid whole. The connection between the support plate 2 and the floats 12 on the one hand and the shape of the floats 12 on the other is designed in such a way that the flow of the water caused by the impeller 5 is not affected.
The device further comprises three legs 14 with which the whole when it is lifted out of the water can be set down without resting on the propeller or floats.
Figure 1b shows a plan view of the device in reduced view, the shape of the floats 12 becoming visible.
Figures 2a and 2b show a variant of the device described in Figure 1, wherein the same parts are shown with the same reference numerals.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The power source 1 with support plate 2 is recognized, the impeller 5 with pump housing 4, legs 14 and connecting elements 11 between support plate 2 and floats 12 in solidarity with the pump housing 4. The shape of screws 6 of the impeller 5 is directed to the right and

gives the water a downward or Z upward movement as a function of the direction of rotation. An additional circulating element 28 with a screw form is placed on the shaft 3 above the impeller 5. This screw 28 has only a single partial winding. The
EMI7.2
movement triggered by screw is opposite to the ZD flow triggered by screws 6.

Figure 2a shows the mixing function and the downward movement of the water is indicated by arrows 25. Arrows 27 show the toroidal movement generated by additional screw 28. Arrows 27 also illustrate the refraction of the vortex that would normally occur around the axis 3 just below the water surface. The presence of screw 28 also prevents air from being sucked into the water and also helps to move down the impurities floating on the water surface.
In the variant shown in Figure 2a, the pump housing 4 is extended at the top with an outwardly directed conical part 20, this improves the water circulation and in particular the upward movement of the water in the aeration function.

Figure 2b shows a top view tD of Figure 2a in reduced view.
Figure 3 shows a device similar to the device described in Figures 1 and 2, wherein the same elements are shown with the same reference numerals.

caused by the circulation element 28 and thus favorably influences the operation of the device.
The device according to Figure 3 comprises the impeller 35 with a double-threaded screw with a wide diameter at the bottom which gradually runs out to zero at the top. The impeller 35 is surrounded by a pump housing 36 which is extended downwards with an outwardly directed conical extension 37, whereby the water circulation is also favorably influenced.
Figures 4a and 4b show a further embodiment of a device according to the invention.
The supporting plate 62 of a power source 61 is of conical shape on the underside, so that a large deflection body 63 is formed. The pump housing 64 is extended at the top with a conical piece 65, so that a water passage 66 between the deflection body 63 and the conical piece 65 is obtained.
The direction of rotation of the impeller 67 is shown schematically by arrows 68.
In figure 4a the device works as a aerator and the water circulation is indicated by arrows 68 and in figure 4b the device works as a mixer.
It is clear that the invention is not limited to the embodiments described above, but includes any variant which comprises the necessary elements given in the appended claim 1.
The propeller and circulation element screw can thus have all possible shapes and can be single or multiple.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
The outflow of the screws and also of the additional circulation element can thus also have a modified shape to promote the circulation of the water.
The power source can also be placed under water.
The deflection body can also lie below the water surface and be placed between the propellant and the circulation element.
It is the task of the skilled person to select the various parts of the device in function of the use of the device.
