Organe de coulée.
Description.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Pouring member.
Description.
The present invention relates to a casting member, mainly for the continuous casting of liquid metals. However, it can also be applied to casting in ingots.
More specifically, the invention relates to a casting member made of refractory material for the transfer of a quantity of liquid metal from an upper metallurgical container to a lower container, comprising a refractory body of generally conical or cylindrical shape, intended to pass through sealing a wall of the upper metallurgical container and delimiting a pouring channel for the liquid metal contained in the upper container. The casting member according to the invention also comprises a metal envelope at least partially encircling the refractory body.
Conventionally, the continuous casting of a liquid metal is carried out from a bag containing the molten metal in a container called a distributor located under the bag and whose function is to ensure the distribution of the liquid metal towards the (the) tap hole (s). From the distributor, the metal is directed through the tap hole, to a casting mold adapted to the technology used.
To conduct the flow of liquid metal from the pocket to the distributor, and, similarly, from the distributor to the mold, refractory casting members are used.
There is shown schematically in Figure 1 a conventional continuous casting assembly. It comprises a pocket 1 containing a quantity of molten liquid metal 2. A distributor 3 is located under the pocket, and two molds 4 under the distributor.
The metal 2 is conveyed from the pocket 1 to the distributor 3 through a pouring channel 5 by means of a nozzle 7, and a jet protection tube 6 connected to the nozzle 7. The lower end of the tube jet protection plunges into the liquid metal 2 contained in the distributor 3.
Similarly, a nozzle 12 having a lower end immersed in the liquid metal contained in the mold 4 leads the flow from the distributor to the mold through a pouring channel 5.
As a variant, it is possible to use pouring members associated with a drawer mechanism which makes it possible to interrupt and regulate the flow of liquid metal. The device comprises an internal nozzle 8, connected to or forming a body with a fixed plate of refractory material 9, another fixed plate 10 connected to a submerged tube 13 and, optionally, one or two plates including at least one movable plate 11 which allows to regulate the flow of metal.
The flow of liquid metal from the distributor to the mold can be regulated in different ways. According to a first system, the inlet opening of the nozzle is closed by means of a stopper 14 which is applied to the seat of the latter as shown on the left-hand side of FIG. 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to another system, two or three plates of perforated refractory material are used placed under the distributor. At least one of these plates is movable in translation or in rotation, so as to regulate the passage section of the pouring channel 5 offered to the fluid as shown in the right part of FIG. 1. According to a variant (not shown) of this latter system, a monolithic pouring member is used comprising a flat surface formed at its lower end (flat nozzle) intended to cooperate with a plate movable in translation or in rotation comprising a pouring orifice, so as to regulate the passage section of the casting channel 5 offered to the fluid.
Obviously, these methods of regulating the flow of a liquid metal apply mutatis mutandis to the pouring of the liquid metal from the ladle to the distributor.
French patent application 2,643,001, for example, describes such systems.
For various metallurgical reasons, an inert gas (for example argon) is conventionally injected at the level of the casting member. This injection can take place either in the casting member itself, directly through its internal wall made of a material permeable to inert gas or by means of conduits leading to orifices (holes or slots) located on the wall. internal of the casting member.
In order to avoid excessive losses of inert gas on the one hand and the entry of atmospheric oxygen which would be detrimental to the quality of the molten liquid metal, it is conventional to encircle the refractory body constituting the casting member. a metallic envelope.
Such casting devices are widely used and conventionally used in the steel industry. However, the casting devices available on the market are not yet fully satisfactory.
There is indeed the formation of very many cracks in the refractory body during their use, or even as soon as they are preheated, in particular in the case where a refractory body which is not very resistant to thermal shock is used. These cracks are the cause of inert gas losses and contamination of the liquid metal by atmospheric oxygen. In the worst case, these cracks can even lead to infiltration of molten liquid metal, which requires the complete stopping of the casting.
There are refractory materials better resistant to thermal shock cracking. However, these materials are generally sensitive to other phenomena such as erosion, corrosion, etc. and it is difficult to reach a compromise satisfying all these criteria.
The Applicant has therefore set itself the objective of finding a way to reduce the formation of cracks in a casting member without having to modify the composition of the
EMI2.1
refractory material. ¯¯ ¯¯ This object is achieved according to the present invention which provides still other advantages.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The present invention is therefore an improvement of the casting member described above in which the metal casing keeps the refractory material constituting the casting member in compression.
Figures 2 and 3 illustrate two internal nozzles according to the invention for the casting of a liquid metal from a distributor to a mold. However, it is understood that the invention also relates to the other casting members which have been discussed above, such as the nozzle 12, the submerged tube 13, the pocket nozzle 7, the jet protection tube 6, the nozzle- plate, etc.
In Figure 2, there is shown schematically an internal nozzle 8 intended to pass through the bottom wall of a distributor (not shown) in a sealed manner and the lower end 15 of which is intended to cooperate with an upper fixed plate (not shown) ).
The body of refractory material 16 comprises a cylindrical part 20 and a frustoconical part 21. 11 defines a pouring channel 5 for the molten metal. The internal nozzle 8 has also been provided with means for supplying inert gas 17 and with a pipe 18 for said inert gas opening onto an orifice 19 at the periphery of the pouring channel 5.
The circumference of the body of refractory material 16 is surrounded by a metal casing 22 maintaining said body of refractory material 16 in compression.
In FIG. 3, an internal nozzle 8 is shown similar to that of FIG. 2.
However, as a variant, it comprises a gas distribution ring 25 connected by a pipe 18 to the inert gas supply means 17.
In this variant, the metal casing is kept maintaining the body of refractory material in compression only around the frustoconical part 21 of the internal nozzle 8.
A metal casing 23 has also been shown in the vicinity of the gas supply means 17.
The metal casing which must maintain the body of refractory material in compression according to the present invention can be put in place in different ways. For example, one can hoop the body of refractory material through the previously heated metal casing.
In a test, the losses of argon recorded were compared with on the one hand an internal nozzle according to the invention and on the other hand, an internal nozzle differing from the first by the fact that the metal casing does not compress the body of refractory material. It is observed that to obtain the same back pressure (0.7 bar), it is necessary to supply 2 to 5 times less inert gas with a casting member according to the invention.
Similarly, with the casting member according to the invention, no loss of inert gas to the outside is detected.
