Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>

  Device for the biological purification of contaminated water. The present invention relates to an apparatus for the biological purification of contaminated water, which contains a bioreactor.

  In a biochemical purification, especially in an anaerobic environment of wastewater, the anaerobic bacteria produce biogas that bubbles up spontaneously in the bioreactor.

  The bacteria used form floating substances that remain largely in suspension due to the flow and the bubbling biogas.

  That is why a three-phase separator has been installed at the top of the bioreactor to separate the biogas and, on the other hand, the suspended matter containing biomass from the liquid, so that a pure effluent remains.

  This three-phase separator usually contains one or more settlers where the suspended matter settles and the remaining water is discharged via an overflow, for example, while the biogas is collected at the top of the reactor and, for example, discharged to a storage tank.

  The biomass that is separated is recycled and thus returned to the lower part of the bioreactor to maintain or increase the purification capacity of the bioreactor.

  Often additional settling surface is added to the settler which, in known devices, is formed by

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   one or more packages of parallel plates, to save space.

  In these known devices, the suspended matter liquid flows upward between the plates, in countercurrent with the sediment flowing down and again into the bottom portion of the bioreactor.

  Gas formation takes place under this settler, however, so that gas also flows upwards through the settler together with the water, so that the settling is not optimal.

  The present invention aims at a device which avoids the aforementioned and other drawbacks and offers a high separation efficiency for the suspended particles per unit area of the separator.

  To this end, the device according to the invention contains a bioreactor, at least one settler with at least a package of parallel plates, which is arranged at the top of this bioreactor for the settling of the suspended particles, in front of the entrance of the settler with which it is deposited on the rest of the bioreactor a degassing device is arranged next to it and at least a biogas collecting agent is arranged under the settler, of which at least a part delimits the settler at the bottom and, on the one hand, collects biogas rising under the settler and, on the other, forms a guide along which the sediment flows to the lower part of the bioreactor.

  Due to the trap, no biogas will flow upward to the packages of parallel plates. Because the water flowing into the settler is also essentially depleted of biogas by the degassing device, the settler results in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 a turbulence-free zone, which allows the sedimentation to take place optimally, while the sediment can still flow back to the lower part of the bioreactor without hindrance.

  The use of collection means in bioreactors to create a low-turbulence zone above it is known as such, but no parallel plate packages are arranged above these collection means.

  Preferably, the degassing device opposite the entrance of the settler contains a reversing element.

  With the insight to better demonstrate the characteristics of the invention, an example without any limiting character is described hereinafter, some preferred embodiments of a device according to the invention, with reference to the accompanying figures, in which: figure 1 schematically shows the upper part of a device according to the represents invention; figure 2 represents a section according to line II-II in figure 1; figure 3 shows in perspective a part of a practical embodiment of a device according to the invention; figure 4 represents a section according to line IV-IV in figure 3; figure 5 schematically represents a part of a section according to line V-V in figure 4.

  The device, as shown in figure 1, consists of a bioreactor 1, a settler 2 placed at the top therein, a biogas collecting means 3 which is placed under the settler 2

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 and a degassing device 4 for the entrance 5 of the settler 2.

  In the example shown, the collecting means 3 has two upright side walls 6 between which a hood 7 consisting of a vertical wall 8 and one obliquely inclined wall 9 extends.

  It is clear that this collecting means 3 can have other shapes and the hood 7 can have two sloping walls 9 or it can contain several caps 7 between the side walls 6 or it can still be formed by one or more funnels.

  The aforementioned collecting means 3 or more particularly its inclined wall 9 forms the lower boundary of the settler 2 and a guide for the sediment.

  The degassing device 4 is located next to the settler 2 and contains a reversing element 10 which is inclined upwards and is located above a passage 11 which is arranged at the top, under the hood 7, in an upright side wall 6 of the collecting means 3.

  The lower edge of the reversing element 10 connects to the aforementioned side wall 6 just above this passage 11.

  In addition to the settler 2 and above the retaining element 10, the top of the bioreactor 1 forms a storage space 12 for biogas to which a gas discharge pipe, not shown in the figures, connects.

  The settler 2 contains a package 13 with parallel oblique plates, between this package 13 and the entrance 5 a flocculation and distribution space 14 and on the other side of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 the package 13 a discharge space 15 in which an effluent collection 16, for instance an overflow that opens onto a discharge, is located.

  The package 13 with its plates is inclined upright and arranged parallel to the flow direction so that the settling direction crosses the direction of the liquid flow.

  The operation of the device is very simple and as follows.

  Wastewater is continuously supplied at the bottom of bioreactor 1 and mixed with biomass.

  Biogas is formed by the action of the biomass on the waste present in the water, resulting in three phases: liquid, suspended particles that largely consist of biomass and biogas.

  The formation of this biogas and the supply of the waste water has the consequence that a turbulent zone is created in the bioreactor 1.

  Biogas bubbling spontaneously under the hood 7 of the collecting means 3 is collected by this collecting means 3, as shown by the arrows P1, and is discharged via the passage 11 and along the bottom of the turning element 10 to the storage space 12 for biogas.

  The waste water, as indicated by arrows P2, is led to the degassing device 4 where it is forced to turn around the turning element 10 to flow through the inlet 5 into the settler 2.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 Due to the sudden change of flow direction and the greater speed of the bubbles of biogas, this biogas will rise further and will be collected in the storage space 12, together with the biogas flowing out of the collecting means 3 via the passage 11, while the heavier and slower water flows over the edge of the reversing element 10 flows downwards in the sense of the arrow P3.

  In this degassing device 4, on the one hand, the floating particles are detached from the gas bubbles to which they are attached and, on the other hand, the waste water is degassed.

  Since the waste water that flows out of the degassing device 4 is practically gas-free and no gas bubbles rise up from the bottom in the settler 2 through the collecting means 3, the zone where the settling of the suspended particles takes place is low in turbulence.

  The liquid with the particulate matter first enters the flocculation and distribution space 14 where a flocculation of the stabilized biomass particles starts as these particles are free from the gas bubbles and excessive turbulence which can keep them in suspension.

  From the flocculation and distribution space 14, the waste water flows between the plates of the package 13.

  These plates form an additional settling surface and the settling particles over them form a flow that is transverse to the practically horizontal flow direction of the liquid.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 Due to the short distance from one plate to the next, and the low turbulence, the particles settle quickly so that they are efficiently separated.

  The sludge-forming sediment slides down the plates and eventually ends up on the inclined wall 9 of the hood 7 from which it slides further and again mixes with the waste water continuously supplied to the bioreactor 1, as shown by arrows P4.

  The wall 9 also increases the settling area of the settler 2.

  The arrows P5 show how the clarified water at the top of the settler 2 overflows into the effluent collection 16 to be discharged from there.

  Figures 3 and 4 show a practical embodiment of a device according to the invention.

  In this embodiment, the bioreactor 1 contains a collection means 3 in the form of a plurality of caps 7A-7B between common upright side walls 6.

  As described above, the caps 7A have a vertical wall 8 and an inclined wall 9, while the caps 7B are smaller and have two inclined walls 9.

  The caps 7A are arranged two by two such that their vertical walls 8 against each other and their facing inclined walls 9 are located a little distance from each other, while the caps 7B are located above the opening between these inclined walls 9, on a small distance above

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 these sloping walls 9, as schematically shown in figure 5.

  The tops of the caps 7A and 7B are at the same height and under each top an opening forming part of the passage 11 is provided in one of the two side walls 6.

  On either side of the settler 2 there is a degassing device 4 with associated reversing element 10 and associated storage space 12.

  The settler 2 contains two rows of several packages 13 with parallel plates resting on a support structure 17.

  Between each row of packages 13 and a degassing device 4, the settler has a flocculation and distribution space 14 which connects to the degassing device 4 with an entrance 5, while between the two rows of packages 13 a common discharge space 15 is formed in which one common central effluent collection 16 is arranged. on a profile list 18.

  The above-described structure of the settler 2-is modular, which means that its parts consist of attachable elements.

  For example, the number of packages 13 per row, the number of rows of packages 13 and the number of caps 7A-7B, both side by side and one behind the other, can be easily changed depending on the size of the bioreactor 1 and / or the desired efficiency or the treat flow rates.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 Due to this modular construction, many other arrangements than shown in the figures are possible.

  The operation of the above-described embodiment is analogous to the operation already described above, with the main difference that the waste water flows through two inputs 5 into the settler 2 and the two flows flow in cross-flow with respect to the sediment through the rows of packages 13. so that the capacity of the settler 2 increases.

  Biogas bubbling up between two neighboring hoods 7A is stopped by a higher hood 7B, so that in this embodiment too no biogas enters the settler 2.

  The sediment from the packages 13 falls through the support structure 17 and lands on the inclined walls 9 from which it slides and falls through the openings between adjacent hoods 7A into the lower part of the bioreactor 1.

  In variants of the device, not shown in the figures, the entrances 5 of the settler 2 can be located in this way and / or guide walls can be arranged between the entrances 5 and the packs 13 in such a way that the waste water co-flows or in countercurrent with the sediment flows between the plates of the packages 13.

  Due to the double function of the collecting means 3, namely collecting the biogas on the one hand and guiding the biosludge on the other hand, the settler 2 can be kept quite compact and work very efficiently.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 It is clear that the invention is by no means limited to the exemplary embodiments described and shown in the accompanying drawings, but such a device can be realized in all kinds of variants without departing from the scope of the invention.
