<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

UNDERWATER SHEET DEFLECTOR ROLL
The present invention relates to installations for coating a sheet metal continuously and relates in particular to the production of deflection rollers immersed in a bath of molten metal.
The submerged rollers are generally two or three in number: a bottom roller for deflecting the strip and one or two spreading rollers, also called stabilizing rollers, the function of which is to remove the tile generated by the bottom roller in order to obtain a flat strip running at a constant distance from the air knives, which is absolutely necessary to have a uniform coating.
Several designs exist, either with three rollers, in which the flatness is adjusted by adjusting the nesting of the two spreading rollers, or with two rollers, in which the same flatness is adjusted by modifying the position of the bottom roller.
One of the major objectives in galvanizing is to obtain a constant coating thickness. To achieve this objective, it is essential to keep constant the distance between the air knife and the sheet, not only in width as specified above, but also throughout the movement of the sheet. The last roller touching the sheet before it leaves the bath has a fundamental role in this sense, since it fixes the line

password. Any instability of rotation, any non-straightness, any non-circularity induces a displacement of the sheet in front of the spinning nozzles and therefore a variation in the thickness of the coating.
The bottom rollers are always hollow, with a table usually having a thickness of 40 to 120 mm and a diameter of 500 to 1000 mm. The spreading rollers are usually produced either in solid form or in the form of hollow rollers, but with a table of at least 40 mm for reasons of wear, and a diameter of 100 to 450 mm.
The submerged rollers in question, and in particular the spreading rollers, only very rarely reach the targeted performances because:. during their preheating, it is not uncommon for them to take a curved shape due to an excessive expansion of a generator or during an inadequate immersion procedure in the bath,. in operation, they are subject to vibrations which are maintained by their support system, this system never being sufficiently rigid because of constraints linked to the location of all the equipment around the molten metal bath, . Finally, it is not uncommon for them to stop when the sheet metal is scrolled because the friction torque in the bearings is too high.
The present invention aims to solve three major problems encountered industrially:
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
. plastic deformations during preheating or immersion of the rollers in the bath,. the displacement of the natural frequency of vibration of the roller + support assembly in a range sufficiently distant from the excitation sources which generally range from 0.5 to 3 Hz, in connection with the speeds of rotation of said rollers,. maximum reduction of the friction torque in the bearings.
To achieve this object, the invention proposes to use hollow immersed rollers comprising flanges which have holes allowing the filling of the interior cavity with liquid metal. These hollow rollers are advantageously produced with a thin table, for example having a thickness less than or equal to approximately 30 mm. Advantageously, these rollers can be fitted with hollow and closed pins in order to reduce the weight of the complete roll in the bath.
The invention is described in more detail in the following with the aid of the accompanying drawings.

<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
table 11 less than about 30 mm and provided with flanges 12 having holes 14 which allow the filling of the hollow by the liquid metal when it is immersed in a bath of liquid metal. This makes it possible to reach a total mass in kilograms in the air of less than 740 x diameter of the roller (m), or approximately 300 kg for a roller having a table 2 m long and an outside diameter of 250 mm. The originality lies in the fact that the roller is produced with a fine table, which can either be made of stainless steel or ordinary steel. Ideally, the table in question is produced by centrifugal casting to guarantee the homogeneity of composition and microstructure of the material.
It could nevertheless be carried out by bending and welding a sheet metal or even drilling or rolling a full tube.
The invention essentially makes it possible to reduce the weight and mass of the roller below 160 kg per meter of table length for a spreading roller with a diameter of 250 mm, which has direct effects on the natural frequency of vibration of the roller arm assembly (by reduction of the kinetic energy) and on the friction torques of the roller in its bearings which are largely due to the weight of the roller in the zinc. In addition, the low weights in question greatly facilitate handling.
In addition, the fact of having a thin table makes it possible to reduce the radial thermal gradients in the roller during its preheating or when it is immersed in the zinc bath. This avoids plasticization generated by differential thermal expansion and therefore changes in shape (circularity, bending, ...).

The roller according to the invention can advantageously be fitted with hollow and closed pins 13 (FIG. 2) to reduce the weight of the complete roller in the metal bath thanks to the additional Archimedes thrust thus generated.
A priori, a roller according to the invention could have a limited complete life due to its small table thickness. However, it is possible to advantageously provide a coating of cermet type or the like, such as those which are commonly used in galvanizing. A thin table roll with a coating like the one described is a very economical complete solution.
