Asafdichting.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Shaft seal.
This invention relates to a selective shaft seal for liquid, for example a seal between two spaces between which there may optionally exist a slight pressure difference.
Such shaft seals are used, inter alia, in compressors when, for example, oil-free compressed air is desired. The seal must prevent oil from the bearings or gearbox from entering the compression chamber.
With liquid-injected compressors, lubricating liquid such as oil or water is injected into the housing.
With oil-injected compressors, the shaft seal must prevent oil from leaking out through the shaft. For water-injected compressors, the shaft seal must prevent water from entering the oil circuit through the bearings.
Fluid shaft seals used heretofore include lip seals, labyrinth seals, visco seals, and the like. These shaft seals are often relatively expensive or difficult to assemble and are not always efficient, especially when a stream of pressurized gas leaks through the seal.
The present invention aims at a selective fluid shaft seal which does not present the aforementioned and other disadvantages, is simple in construction and yet allows an efficient liquid seal.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
This object is achieved according to the invention by a fluid shaft seal between a shaft mounted in a housing and this housing, this shaft seal containing a body of open cell cellular material attached to this shaft and allowing gas to pass through but retaining liquid.
Preferably, according to the invention, this body with its circumference projects into a groove in the wall of the housing, this groove forming an annular chamber around the body for collecting the liquid.
This body can be in the form of a disc.
With the insight to better demonstrate the features of the invention, two preferred embodiments of a shaft seal according to the invention are described below, by way of example without any limiting character, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: figure 1 schematically and in cross-section one in a housing shows bearing-mounted shaft with a shaft seal according to the invention; figure 2 represents a cross-section analogous to that of figure 1, but with regard to another embodiment of the shaft seal; figure 3 represents the part indicated by F3 in figure 1 but with regard to yet another embodiment of the shaft seal.
Figure 1 shows a shaft 1 which is mounted in a ball bearing 2 which is arranged in an opening 3 in the wall of a housing 4 of a compressor and which is sealed by a shaft seal.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The shaft 1 thus forms the end of one of the cooperating rotors 5 which are arranged in the housing 4. With the shaft 1, this rotor 5 is supported with one end in the housing 4. The other end is mounted in an analogous manner with a shaft in a bearing and the same or a different shaft seal is also arranged around this shaft.
The shaft seal shown in figure 1 is located on the outside of the ball bearing 2 relative to the rotor 5.
This shaft seal is a selective seal for the lubricating liquid, for example oil, and consists of an open cell cellular material body 6 attached to the shaft 1.
In the illustrated embodiment, the body 6 has the shape of a round disc.
The periphery of this body 6 is located in a groove 7 which is arranged in the wall of the opening 3. The width of this groove is almost equal to the width of the body 6 and the diameter of this body 6 is larger than the diameter of the opening 3 next to the groove 7, but smaller than the diameter at the location of the groove 7.
As a result, the body 6 substantially closes the opening 3 and an annular space remains around the body 6 in the groove 7, which forms a chamber 8 for collecting liquid.
A discharge channel 9, which extends beyond the housing 1, connects to chamber 8.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The body 6 preferably consists of a hard foam of plastic or of metal or of ceramic material.
A very suitable material for the body 6 is a foam made of metal, which was produced by depositing a metal layer, for example nickel or nickel-chromium, on a polyurethane foam by means of an electroplating process and then removing this polyurethane foam by pyrolysis.
If the foam is of ceramic material, it was made, for example, by depositing a ceramic material on a polyurethane foam and then removing the polyurethane foam by pyrolysis.
The flow resistance for gases of the material is sufficiently low for gases to flow through them. Liquid particles are retained by the rotating body 6 and flung radially away into the chamber 8 where they are collected. The liquid collects at the bottom of this chamber 8 and is discharged via the discharge channel 9 as indicated by the arrow 10 in the figures.
In particular, liquid 6 such as oil is separated by the body 6 from any leak gases which leak through a classic gas seal 11 which surrounds the shaft 1 on the side of the rotor 5.
The construction and assembly of the body 6 is simple and inexpensive.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The shaft seal shown in Figure 2 is completely analogous to the previously described shaft seal but is located on the inside with respect to the ball bearing 2.
Because the opening 3 has a larger diameter at this location, the diameter of the body 6 is also slightly larger.
The operation of the shaft seal is completely analogous.
Because this shaft seal is located on the inside of the ball bearing and this shaft seal does not let any liquid through, in this case water could be used as lubricating liquid for the rotors instead of, for example, oil.
The shaft seal shown in Figure 3 differs mainly from that shown in Figure 1 in that means are provided to allow any flow of gas with liquid particles in the body 6 to flow essentially to the shaft 1.
These means are formed by an annular plate 12 covering the side of the body 6 facing the liquid particle gas and thus located upstream and fixed to the body 6, for example glued, and by a second annular plate 13 which is attached to the opposite side of the body 6 to cover only the outer part of this side.
If gas with liquid particles wants to flow through the shaft seal, this gas must flow via the groove 7 through the body 6 from the outside to the shaft 1, whereby the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
liquid particles are retained and separated from the gas.
In this version the shaft seal also works in the same way as described above.
The shaft seals described above are not only applicable to the rotor shafts of a compressor. They can also seal an shaft in other cases, especially when selectively holding back liquid but allowing a gas such as air to pass through.
These shaft seals can, for example, seal the shaft of a gearbox.
The present invention is by no means limited to the embodiments described above and shown in the figures, but such shaft seals can be realized in different variants without departing from the scope of the invention.
