<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
voorkeur 25, 0-60, 0 gew. %.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
bij voorkeur 2, 0-15, 0 gew. %, bij hogere voorkeur 2, 5-10, 0 gew. %.
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Voorbeeld
Een oplossing wordt bereidt die bestaat uit :
EMI6.2
30, chloorprofam 97. 58, (geraffineerd)
61 gew. %8, 00 gew. % castorolie-ethyleenoxide type emulgator met 15 ethyleenoxide eenheden
3, 00 gew. % tripropyleenglycol monomethylether.
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Title: Germ sprouting agent for potatoes
The invention relates to a composition for use as a potato sprout inhibitor, a method of treating potatoes and an aqueous dispersion of the composition.
Potatoes are stored after harvest pending further processing (storage). This can be storage as seed potatoes for the next season, but also storage prior to industrial processing, or processing into products that are directly intended for the consumer. During this storage it is important that the quality of the potatoes is guaranteed over a longer period. It is also important to keep good control of the conditions in which the potatoes are stored. The climate should not be too humid, otherwise rot will occur. When the climate is too dry, the turgor of the potato decreases and the potato becomes softer. A problem when storing potatoes is that the potatoes can sprout, also known as sprouts.
The sprouting of potatoes is the start of the germination processes and the formation of so-called shoots that can later grow into plants and roots. The breeding ground for the suckers is the potato tuber itself.
EMI1.1
This that loss of quality occurs. This also means the potato shows visually unattractive and unpalatable spots and undesired coloring of the crop.
The sprouting can be prevented by storing the potatoes at a temperature of 20 ° C, but reducing sugars are formed which cause the potatoes to turn brown and taste sweet in subsequent baking processes such as frying. For these reasons, potatoes are usually stored at a temperature between 5 and 8 C. At this temperature, the problem of the formation of reducing sugars does not arise
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
or is considerably smaller, but with longer storage the run-out cannot be completely prevented
In order to prevent the sprouting of potatoes, the prior art makes use of sprout inhibitors which are applied to the potato and thus counteract the germination.
Such germ-inhibiting agents are, for example
EMI2.1
isopropopyl-N- (profam, IPC) and isopropopyl-N-CIPC). These agents are widely used as sprout inhibitors. The use of profam is no longer allowed within the EU as of April 1997. Also, with growing ecological awareness, the demand for potatoes treated with the smallest possible dose of sprout inhibitors is increasing. In addition, preference is also being given to agents containing constituents of natural origin.
Until now, a sprouting agent based on chlorpropham has been used as a powder.
A drawback of such a composition is that the powder does not adhere well to the potato. When the potatoes are treated. with a powder containing the active substance, due to a lack of adhesion, the powder will not stick well to the surface of the potato.
As a result, the powder has an irregular distribution over the surface of the potato. Due to storage and transport, some of the powder that is not properly adhered to the potato becomes loose and sinks down into the storage or atomizes. This makes a sub-optimal use of the active ingredient. In addition to the adverse effect of the uneven treatment of the potato, such wastage and dusting is also undesirable from an environmental and work hygiene point of view.
The invention now provides a composition that exhibits better adhesion to the potato, a more even distribution over the surface of the potato
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
does not spray and also eliminates the disadvantages of a powder, as outlined above.
The invention relates to a composition comprising chlorpropham and an oil for use as a sprout inhibitor. The chlorpropham-containing composition can be sprayed or atomized over the potatoes by techniques known per se.
The composition according to the invention provides a better spread, a simpler dosage, a more economical consumption and a better adhesion of the product to the potato. Moreover, it has been found that the combination of the components of the composition, in particular when using oils of vegetable origin, in combination with chlorpropham results in a reduction of the color change.
The present invention now provides a composition that provides a more efficient and economical way of using chlorpropham as a sprout inhibitor.
According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a composition comprising chlorpropham and an oil is distributed among the potatoes by spraying or atomizing.
The invention also relates to a method for treating potatoes against premature germination: by using a sprout inhibitor based on a composition according to the invention.
The invention also relates to an aqueous dispersion of a composition according to the invention.
In the oil, as used in the composition according to the invention, it is possible to use components of both mineral and animal or vegetable origin. It is preferable to use the oil in an amount of 1.0-95.0 wt. %, based on the total weight of the composition according to the invention, to be used, preferably 5.0-75.0 wt. %, higher
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
preferably 25.0-60.0 wt. %. As an oil component in the composition according to the present invention, any oil of vegetable or animal origin can be used, such as saturated or (poly) unsaturated oils consisting of a fatty acid and a polyalcohol such as glycol or glycerol, whether or not fully or partially saponified, and any combination of this.
It is also possible to use mixtures of such compounds or mixtures of vegetable, animal and / or mineral origin. Flaxseed oil, rapeseed oil, soybean oil or derivatives thereof are preferably used, more preferably soybean oil or rapeseed oil.
Chlorpropham is a solid which melts at about 40 OC under normal conditions and can therefore be used at temperatures above 40 OC without further diluents or other additives. A preferred composition according to the invention comprises between 1.0 and 50.0 wt. % chlorpropham, based on the total weight of the composition according to the invention, preferably between 20.0 and 40.0 wt. % and furthermore also oils, solvents, thickeners, surfactants and other usual additives.
Suitable solvents are, for example, solvents of mineral origin, including aliphatic or aromatic solvents, alcohols, esters, ethers, ketones, aldehydes, polyalcohol ethers or mixtures thereof.
These solvents may or may not be (multiple) chlorinated. Examples of these solvents are xylene, dichloromethane, alcohols such as glycerols (e.g. polyethylene glycol) or polyethylene glycol ethers and polypropylene glycol ethers having the ether group methyl, ethyl or any alkyl or derivatives or mixtures thereof. A typical component is tripropylene glycol monomethyl ether (TPM, e.g. Dowanol TPM) in an amount of 1.0-25.0 wt. %, based on the total weight of the composition according to the invention,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
preferably 2.0-15.0 wt. %, more preferably 2.5-10.0 wt. %.
The composition can also be used in the form of an emulsion. Emulsifiers can be added for this. These emulsifiers can be cationic, anionic or non-ionic surfactants or mixtures thereof. The emulsifiers can be of mineral, animal or vegetable origin or mixtures thereof. Examples are calcium dodecylbenzene sulfonates, nonyl phenol polyglycol ethers ethoxylated fatty acid alcohols or amines or derivatives or combinations thereof.
Preferably, a castor oil ethylene oxide type emulsifier is used with 15 ethylene oxide units in an amount of 0.5-20.0 wt. %, based on the total weight of the composition according to the invention, preferably 2.5-15.0 wt. %, more preferably 5.0-10.0 wt. %.
It is common to store potatoes in bulk or in large batches or in cells, boxes or boxes in a storage room. Cool air can be blown through the potatoes by means of ventilation systems, and the air can be additionally cooled if necessary. Storage of potatoes outside may, in addition to the above-described methods, also take place in a pit or heap, and the present invention also applies to this.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the agent is distributed to the potatoes by spraying or atomizing using means known per se in the art, such as spray nozzles and so-called spray discs. This nebulization of the solution can take place at any stage after harvest. At any time during the storage process it is possible to apply the product to the potatoes. The product is formulated in such a way that no additional time is required to dry. The potatoes can therefore be sprayed, for example, during transport on a conveyor belt or at the end of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
conveyor belt when the potatoes fall on a storage mountain or in a box.
Treatment with this agent can also take place at a random location in the sequence of operations between harvest and storage or during storage.
For a finer distribution of the active substance, a diluted composition can also be used. To this end, the composition of the present invention is diluted with a suitable diluent and then homogenized, optionally using an emulsifier.
The amount of thinner used to dilute the solution is such that when the solution
EMI6.1
is sprayed over the potatoes, the thinner can easily evaporate. If water is used as a thinner, this must be done in such an amount that a good distribution of the agent over the potatoes is obtained without increasing the moisture content of the potatoes or the moisture content in the room where the potatoes are stored. is that rotting processes can occur.
It is also possible to spread the composition according to the invention in the storage space by spraying it into the air via the ventilation systems.
The invention is illustrated but in no way limited by the following example.
Example
A solution is prepared consisting of:
EMI6.2
30, chlorprofam 97.58, (refined)
61 wt. % 8.00 wt. % castor oil ethylene oxide type emulsifier with 15 ethylene oxide units
3.00 wt. % tripropylene glycol monomethyl ether.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The dosage is 60 mL per 1000 Kg of potatoes and can be diluted with up to 140 mL of water per 1000 Kg of potatoes, depending on the equipment used.
This solution is sprayed evenly. It is visible to the naked eye that the active substance is evenly distributed over the potato as small crystals. The potatoes hardly sprout or hardly and have a good shelf life under the usual storage conditions.
