<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

A method and device for generating pressure in an aerosol can and the like, and an aerosol equipped with such an device.
This invention relates to a method and an apparatus for generating pressure in an aerosol can and the like, as well as an aerosol equipped with such an apparatus.
More specifically, it relates to a method of generating pressure of the type in which two products are brought together which react with each other to form a gas with which the pressure in question is created.
According to a known technique, which is described in European patent no. 0 033 377, the aforementioned products are stored in different compartments of a bag. After this bag is applied in an aerosol, the products are brought into contact with each other by successively breaking partitions between the aforementioned compartments, whereby a gas is created in the bag and this bag expands. The expansion of the bag is utilized to displace the product contained in the aerosol as well as to systematically break the partitions of the following compartments.
This technique has the less favorable property that the pressure in the spray can is not constant and fluctuates. Every time two compartments are connected to each other, a gas production occurs which causes an increase in pressure. The next two compartments are only connected when the bag has achieved a certain expansion, but the pressure has now dropped. Since the number of compartments to be constructive
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
reasons is limited, the aforementioned pressure fluctuations are relatively large.
This known technique also has the disadvantage that the bag with the compartments has to be assembled fairly accurately so that the partitions between the compartments break at the right moment.
The object of the invention is a method and device with which one or more of the above-mentioned drawbacks can be excluded.
To this end, the invention primarily relates to a method for generating pressure in an aerosol, in which at least two products are brought together, which produce a gas through their contact and thus create a gas pressure, characterized in that it consists in passing through a bringing a closable passage together of the products and controlling the passage of the passage between a closed and an open state in function of the gas pressure created.
The passage of the passage is preferably controlled by means of a pressure-sensitive regulator, more particularly a pressure-sensitive valve that responds to the pressure in the aerosol, such that the passage is closed from the moment that the pressure in the aerosol has reached a certain value. , but is opened again as soon as the pressure falls below the aforementioned value again.
This ensures that the two products are progressively combined, so that the gas production occurs exactly in function of the amount of gas required to restore the normal expulsion pressure after each activation of the spray can.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The invention also relates to a device for realizing the aforementioned method. It consists for this purpose of a receptacle in which a first of the above two products is available; a lockable passage through which the first product and the second product can be brought into contact with each other; and a pressure-sensitive passage regulator cooperating with the passage, which provides a closure of the passage at least when a preset pressure is reached.
The first product is preferably a liquid, so that a valve can be used for the closing element. This valve allows the liquid to escape from the container and come into contact with the second product whenever a pressure drop in the aerosol occurs and an additional amount of propellant must be produced to restore normal pressure levels.
The expulsion of the liquid from the aforementioned container, at least in the open position of the valve, can take place in various ways. According to an advantageous possibility of the invention, the device has means which allow the liquid in the container to be pressurized using the pressure created in the aerosol such that no separate pressure means for expelling the liquid are necessary. In a preferred embodiment, these means are formed by a wall of the aforesaid container, which for that purpose is made of a slowly gas-permeable material.
In a preferred embodiment, the device is equipped with a pressure-sensitive flow regulator which is designed in such a way that the passage is both closed
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
as soon as the pressure reaches a value that is greater than or equal to the expulsion pressure of the aerosol for which the device is intended, and is at least also closed at a pressure that is less than or equal to atmospheric pressure. As a result, the device can be stored in an atmospheric environment without any difficulty before being installed in an aerosol can, without the gas generation starting. In addition, the device can be easily activated by initially creating an external pressure in the aerosol reservoir.
With the insight to better demonstrate the features of the invention, some preferred embodiments are described hereinafter without any limitation, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: figure 1 schematically represents an aerosol equipped with a device according to the invention ; figure 2 represents a practical embodiment; figure 3 shows on a larger scale and in cross-section the part indicated by arrow F3 in figure 2; figure 4 represents a section according to line IV-IV in figure 3; figures 5,6 and 7 show on a larger scale the part indicated by F5 in figure 3, for different positions; figure 8 represents a variant of the part indicated by F8 in figure 3.
As shown in figure 1, the invention relates to a device 1 which can be applied in an aerosol 2, which allows to create an overpressure P in the reservoir 3 of the aerosol 2, such that the product 4 to be sprayed present in the aerosol from the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
reservoir 3 is displaced, for example via a riser 5, as soon as the usual valve 6 or the like is activated, more specifically opened by pressing a push button 7.
As shown schematically, use is made of two products 8 and 9 which react to a gas 10 when they are brought together. Preferably, products are used that react with each other to form carbon dioxide gas. For this purpose, the first product 8 preferably consists of an acid in a liquid state, or an acid dissolved in a liquid, for example citric acid. The second product 9 preferably consists of a salt, for example calcium carbonate, barium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate.
According to the invention, the device 1 for generating the gas 10 is mainly composed of a container 11 in which the first product 8 is arranged; a passage 12 through which the first product 8 can come into contact
EMI5.1
with the second product 9 and a pressure-sensitive passage regulator 13, preferably a pressure-sensitive shut-off valve, with which the passage 12 is closed or not, depending on the ambient pressure around the device 1, i.e. the pressure in the reservoir 3.
The pressure-sensitive flow regulator 13 is such that the passage 12 is closed as soon as the value of the pressure in the reservoir 3 is greater than or equal to a predetermined value, and is opened again as soon as a pressure drop in the reservoir 3 occurs again. The aforementioned predetermined value here is equal to the required expulsion pressure.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In essence, the aforementioned products 8 and 9 need not each be contained in a container. After all, it is sufficient that they are separated from each other and that they can be brought together in a controlled manner by means of the pressure-sensitive flow regulator. In principle, one of the two products, in this case the product 9, can be freely present in the reservoir 3 of the spray can.
The operation and use of the device 1 is mainly as follows.
In the rest state, the reservoir 3 is filled with a certain amount of product 4 to be sprayed and an amount of gas 10 with which the reservoir 3 is kept under a pressure P.
When the push button 7 is pressed, the valve 6 is opened and the product 4 is pressed out through the riser 5 and an outlet opening 14 and, if necessary, atomized. As a result, the pressure in the reservoir 3 drops. The pressure drop is sensed by the pressure-sensitive port regulator 13, which thereby opens the port 12. As a result, the product 8 from the receptacle 11 comes into contact with the product 9, thereby generating gas 10 and restoring the pressure P.
As soon as the pressure P has returned to its normal value, the flow regulator 13 closes the passage 12 again. The supply of product 8 to product 9 is thus interrupted, as a result of which gas production ceases and the pressure in the reservoir 3 no longer increases.
According to the invention, various techniques can be used to drive the product 8 out of the container 11.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
According to one possibility, the container 11 is pressurized by applying a quantity of gas under pressure in addition to the product 8, at a pressure which is preferably higher than the expulsion pressure of the spray can.
Figures 2 to 7 show a practical embodiment of the device 1.
The second product 9 is hereby housed in a chamber 15 which adjoins the aforementioned passage 12, which offers the advantage that the product 8 flowing out of the passage comes into direct contact with the product 9, which ensures a rapid reaction. The generated gas 10 can leave the chamber 15 through outlet openings 16.
The pressure-sensitive passage controller 13 consists of a pressure-sensitive element 17 and a valve 18 co-operating therewith, which is mounted in the passage 12.
The pressure-sensitive element 17 can in principle consist of any elastically compressible construction. In the example shown, it consists of a housing 19, one wall of which is formed by a diaphragm 20 movable under the influence of the pressure prevailing in the aerosol, which for example consists of a thin steel corrugated plate.
The reaction force when the diaphragm 20 is pressed is mainly supplied by means of an elastic element 21 enclosed in the housing 19.
It is clear that the housing 19 is gastight. The gas present in the housing 19, for example air under atmospheric pressure, and the elasticity of the diaphragm 20 naturally also provide a force component that influences the displacement of the diaphragm 20.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
In a particularly simple to realize embodiment, the elastic element 21 will be formed by a piece of rubber or plastic hose which is enclosed either in a straight position or in a rolled-up state in the housing 19 in a compressed state.
The valve 18 preferably consists of a needle-shaped valve body 22, in which a recess 23 is provided, and a valve seat 24 in which the valve body 22 can slide axially, such that the passage 12 is opened when the recess 23 is opposite the valve seat 24.
The valve seat 24 can here consist of an O-ring mounted in the passage 12.
The valve body 22 cooperates at one end with the diaphragm 20 and may or may not be attached thereto.
In the embodiment of Figure 3, the receptacle 11 has a wall 25 made of a material that allows slow transmission of gas when a pressure differential is applied. This wall 25 need not be permeable to all gases, but it is sufficient that it be permeable to the produced gas 10, in the first instance to carbon dioxide.
More specifically, this wall 25 will consist of semi-rigid material, for example polyurethane.
In order to obtain a sufficient permeability, the wall 25 will be manufactured relatively thin, for instance by means of a thermal forming process. However, in order to give it sufficient strength, it can be performed in steps.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
The configuration of the receptacle 11, the chamber 15 and the housing 19 is preferably as shown in Figure 3, which means that the chamber 15 is situated between the receptacle 11 and the housing 19, that the valve 18 is in the wall 26 is located between the receptacle 11 and the chamber 15 and that the diaphragm 20 is located opposite the wall 26 in which the valve 18 is arranged. The product 9 is preferably formed by an annularly compressed salt block which is positioned around the valve body 22.
The operation of the device 1 is as described below.
When the device 1 is in an atmospheric environment, the valve body 22 assumes a position as shown in Figure 5 in that the diaphragm 20 deflects upward. The passage 12 is hereby closed and the first product 8 cannot leave the container 11.
After the device 1 has been placed in an aerosol 2, a pressure can first be applied via an external supply in the aerosol 2, which is, for example, slightly greater than the normal expulsion pressure. This pressure acts on the diaphragm 20, causing the valve body 22 to shift to the position shown in Figure 6.
Since the wall 25 is permeable to gas, a pressure is also built up in the space 27 of the receptacle 11. Over time, the pressures in the reservoir 3 and in the space 27 are equal.
When product 4 is subsequently sprayed, the pressure in the reservoir 3 drops. However, this pressure drop is not immediately followed by a similar pressure drop in the space 27. When the pressure in the reservoir 3 becomes lower than the normal expulsion pressure, the valve body reaches

22 a position as shown in figure 7. Since the pressure in the space 27 at that time is even greater than in the reservoir 3, the product 8 is forced out of the container 11 via the opened valve 18.
Because the released product 8 reacts with the product 9, gas is produced which passes through the outlet openings 16 into the reservoir 3. As a result, the pressure increases again, so that the diaphragm 20 is depressed again. When the desired expulsion pressure is reached, the diaphragm 20 is pressed in such a way that it returns to the state of figure 6, whereby the passage 12 is closed and the gas generation ceases.
It is clear that in this way a constant pressure is automatically maintained in the reservoir 3.
Instead of a permeable wall 25, pressure-transmitting means of another type can also be used.
According to a variant, the wall 25 is not permeable to gas and, as schematically indicated in Figure 3, a non-return valve 28 is used which allows the gas 10 to flow from the reservoir 3 into the receptacle 11 whenever the pressure in the reservoir 3 is greater than the pressure in the container 11.
Of course, other embodiments are also possible. Figure 8 shows, for example, a variant in which the elastic element 21 consists of an annular block of elastically compressible material, for example foam plastic or rubber.
According to a variant not shown, an elastic element 21 will not be used and the reaction force will become
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
supplied exclusively by the inherent elasticity of the diaphragm 20 and by the gas pressure exerted thereon.
Figure 8 also shows that the valve body 22 can be attached to the diaphragm 20, in this case by clamping in a seat 29 in the center of the diaphragm.
As is still shown in figure 8, each of the outlet openings 16 can be provided with a non-return valve 30. This can consist of an elastic band stretched over the outlet openings 16 with a very slight tension, such as, for example, the O-ring 31 shown.
The presence of the non-return valve 30 allows the generated gas 10 to escape, but products 4 and 9 cannot come into direct contact with one another, which may be desirable in certain applications. In this way, the product 9 cannot disperse in the reservoir 3, for example by dissolving it in the product 4. The product 9, which has not yet reacted, therefore remains in the vicinity of the passage 12, so that the release of an amount of product 8 is always an immediate gas generation results.
Such a non-return valve may also consist of a very small opening or a porous part in the wall of the chamber 15, this opening or this porous part allowing gas 10 to leak from the chamber 15, but not to penetrate liquid in the reverse direction.
According to a variant not shown, the complete device 1 can be put into a gastight expandable bag before installing it in the reservoir 3. In this way, any contact between, on the one hand, the product

4, on the other hand, products 8 and 9 and gas 10 are excluded.
The compact construction of the device 1, with only an amount of product 8 and one amount of product 9, offers the advantage that a relatively large device 1 can still produce a large amount of gas, in contrast to the known embodiments in which the products are housed in several compartments. Due to the fact that large quantities of gas can easily be generated, the invention is particularly suitable for applications in which the gas 10 is not only used to exert a pressure on the product 4, but must also mix with the product 4 to be sprayed , for example, to cause foaming in the case of a product to be foamed.
In that case, the device 1 will contain an amount of reactable products 8-9 such that the generated gas 10 is capable both of providing the expulsion of the product 4 and of providing the foaming effect.
The aforementioned device 1 can be arranged either loosely in the reservoir 3 or fixedly mounted therein. According to the invention the device 1 is not only intended for use in classic aerosol cans, but it can be used in all kinds of dosing containers in which the product to be dosed is expelled under pressure.
The present invention is by no means limited to the exemplary embodiments described and shown in the figures, but the aforementioned method and device can be realized in different variants without departing from the scope of the invention.
