<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
l'automobile.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

This type of glass finds a very wide use in the field of glazing for the building or the automobile, for example. It is commonly manufactured in the form of a ribbon by the stretching or floating process. such a ribbon can be cut in the form of sheets which can then be curved or undergo a treatment for strengthening the mechanical properties, for example, thermal quenching.
When talking about the optical properties of a glass sheet, it is generally necessary to relate these properties to a standard illuminant. In the present description, 2 standard illuminants are used. Illuminant C and illuminant A defined by the International Commission on Lighting (C. I. E.).
Illuminant C represents average daylight having a color temperature of 6700 K. This illuminant is especially useful for evaluating the optical properties of glazing intended for buildings. Illuminant A represents the radiation from a Planck radiator at a temperature of around 2856 K This illuminant represents the light emitted by car headlights and is essentially intended to assess the optical properties of glazing intended for
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the automobile.
The International Lighting Commission has also published a document entitled "Colorimetry, Official Recommendations of the C. LE." (May 1970) which describes a theory according to which the color coordinates for the light of each wavelength of the visible spectrum are defined so that they can be represented on a diagram having orthogonal axes x and y called the trichromatic diagram C. 1 E. This trichromatic diagram shows the representative location of the light of each wavelength (expressed in nanometers) of the visible spectrum. This place is called "spectrum locus" and the light whose coordinates are placed on this spectrum locus is said to have 100% purity of excitation for the appropriate wavelength.
The spectrum locus is closed by a line called the purple line which joins the points of the spectrum locus whose coordinates correspond to the wavelengths 380 nm (purple) and 780 nm (red). The area between the spectrum locus and the purple line is that available for the trichromatic coordinates of any visible light. The coordinates of the light emitted by the illuminant C, for example, correspond to x-0, 3101 and y-0, 3162. This point C is considered to represent white light and therefore has an excitation purity equal to zero for any wavelength.
Lines can be drawn from point C to the spectrum locus at any desired wavelength and any point on these lines can be defined not only by its x and y coordinates, but also as a function of the corresponding wavelength to the line on which it is located and its distance from point C relative to the total length of the wavelength line. Consequently, the tint of the light transmitted by a sheet of colored glass can be described by its dominant wavelength and its excitation purity expressed in percent.
In fact, the C. LE coordinates of light transmitted by a sheet of colored glass will depend not only on the composition of the glass but also on its thickness. In the present description, as well as in the claims, all the values of the trichromatic coordinates (x, y), of the excitation purity P, of the dominant wavelength λ. o the light transmitted, and the light transmittance factor of the glass (TL) are calculated from specific spectral internal transmissions (TSI, of a sheet of glass 5 mm thick.
The specific spectral internal transmission of a glass sheet is governed solely by the absorption of glass and can be expressed by Beer-Lambert law:
EMI2.1
TS! .-e \ where A. is the absorption coefficient of the glass (in years) at the wavelength considered and E the thickness of the glass (in cm).
As a first approximation, TSI can also be represented by the formula
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
(l + R / d-RiJ where l1 # is the intensity of the visible light on a first face of the glass sheet, R1 # is the intensity of the visible light reflected by this face, read is the intensity of the visible light transmitted from the second face of the glass sheet and R is the intensity of the visible light reflected towards the interior of the sheet by this second face.
In the following description and in the claims, the following are also used: - the total light transmission for the illuminant A (TLA), measured for a thickness of 4 mm (rLA4). This total transmission is the result of the integration between the wavelengths of 380 and 780 nm of the expression: # T \. E. Sx / IE in which T 4 is the transmission at the wavelength X, E # is the spectral distribution of the illuminant A and su is the sensitivity of the normal human eye as a function of the wavelength # .
- total energy transmission (TE), measured for a thickness of 4 mm (TE4). This total transmission is the result of the integration between the wavelengths 300 and 2150 nm of the expression: 1 T # .E # / # E # in which Ex is the spectral energy distribution of the sun at 300 above the horizon.
- the selectivity (SE), measured for a thickness of 4mm (SE4), by the ratio (TLA4 / TE4).
- total transmission in the ultraviolet, measured for a thickness of 4 mm (TUVT4). This total transmission is the result of the integration between 280 and 380 nm of the expression: 1 T # .U # / # U #. in which Ux is the spectral distribution of the ultra-violet radiation having passed through the atmosphere, determined in standard DIN 67507.
The present invention relates in particular to gray glasses with a shade varying between greenish and bluish. When the transmission curve of a transparent substance hardly varies as a function of the visible wavelength, this substance is qualified as "neutral gray". In the C.I.E system, it has no dominant wavelength and its excitation purity is zero. By extension, we consider as gray, a body whose spectral curve is relatively flat in the visible range but nevertheless has weak absorption bands, making it possible to define a dominant wavelength and a low but not zero purity. The excitation purity of the gray glass according to the present invention is less than 6%.
Gray lenses are generally chosen for their protective properties against solar radiation and their use in the building industry is known, especially in countries with strong sunshine. Gray glasses are also
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
used in railings for terraces or stairwells and for partially glazing certain railroad vehicles or compartments.
In the automotive sector, the trend is currently to choose gray glass for the manufacture of side windows and rear glasses. The standards imposed in terms of minimum light transmission for windshields and side windows in front of vehicles, as well as the need for these windows to have a low energy transmission making it possible to avoid excessive heating of the passenger compartment, have so far forced manufacturers to use green glass for front windshields and side windows because only glass of this shade allowed high selectivity while meeting legal standards for light transmission.
The present invention relates to a light gray glass specially suitable for its use in the form of car glazing, particularly as front side glazing and windshield. This glass has optical and energetic qualities hitherto offered only by green glass, while advantageously making it possible to harmonize the color of a windshield and of front side windows with that of the other panes of an automobile.
This invention provides a light gray soda lime colored glass composed of main constituents, glass formers, a reducing agent and coloring agents, characterized in that the elements iron, selenium, cobalt are present as coloring agents. , in an amount corresponding to the following proportions (expressed as a percentage by weight of the glass in the form indicated)

and the proportions of the coloring agents being such that the glass has a total light transmission measured for a glass thickness of 4 mm with the illuminant A greater than 62%, a selectivity measured for a glass thickness of 4 mm (SE4) greater than 1,
1 and an excitation purity (P) of less than 6%.
The present invention makes it possible to obtain a glass whose selectivity reaches at least a value of 1.1, which for gray-colored glass is very high, with a high light transmission corresponding to the standards imposed in the automotive field in terms of front windshields and side windows
In fact, glass of roughly similar coloring can be produced using nickel as the main coloring agent. The presence of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
However, nickel has drawbacks, especially when the glass is to be produced by the float process. In the float process, a ribbon of hot glass is routed along the surface of a molten tin bath so that its faces are flat and parallel.
In order to avoid oxidation of the tin on the surface of the bath, which would lead to the entrainment of tin oxide by the ribbon, a reducing atmosphere is maintained above the bath. When the glass contains nickel, this is partially reduced by the atmosphere above the tin bath, giving rise to a haze in the glass produced. This element is also detrimental to obtaining a high selectivity because it does not does not absorb light in the infrared range, which prevents reaching a weak TE. In addition, the nickel present in the glass can form sulfide NiS.
This sulphide exists in various crystalline forms, stable in different temperature ranges, and whose transformations into one another create problems when the glass must be reinforced by a thermal toughening treatment, as is the case in the automotive field and also for certain glazing in the building (balconies, lighters, ...). The glass according to the invention which does not contain nickel is therefore particularly well suited for manufacturing by the float process as well as for architectural use or in the field of motor vehicles or others.
The combined presence of the coloring agents iron, cobalt and selenium and of a reducing agent makes it possible to adjust the optical and energetic properties of the gray glass according to the invention. The effects of the different coloring agents considered individually for the production of a glass are as follows (according to "Le Verre" by H. Schoize-translated by J.
The Dû-Institut du Verre-Paris):
Iron: Iron is actually present in most glasses on the market, either as an impurity, or deliberately introduced as a coloring agent The presence of Fie3 gives the glass a slight absorption of visible light of low wavelength (410 and 440 nm) and a very strong absorption band in the ultraviolet (absorption band centered on 380 nm), while the presence of Fe2 + ions causes a strong absorption in the infrared (absorption band centered on 1050 nm). The ferric ions give the glass a slight yellow coloration, while the ferrous ions give a more pronounced blue-green coloration.
Selenium: The cation Se 4'n has practically no coloring effect, while the uncharged element gives a pink coloration. The Se2 anion forms a chromophore with the ferric ions present and thereby confers a reddish brown color on the glass.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Cobalt: The group Co "04 produces an intense blue coloration with a dominant wavelength almost opposite to that given by the iron-selenium chromophore.
The energy and optical properties of a glass containing these different coloring agents, iron and selenium, therefore result from a complex interaction between them. Indeed, each of these coloring agents has a behavior which strongly depends on its redox state and therefore on the presence of other elements capable of influencing this state.
The combination of the coloring elements and their proportions confers on the glass according to the invention a total light transmission TLA4 greater than 62% which allows it to meet the standards of minimum light transmission at the front of a vehicle when this glass is there. used as a front windscreen or side window.
The total energy transmission of glass (TE4) allowed by the present invention is preferably less than 65%.
This property is particularly advantageous in the automotive field.
The gray glass according to the present invention preferably has a dominant wavelength between 460 and 550 nm, corresponding to a shade varying between greenish and bluish which is essentially linked to the combination of cobalt and selenium agents.
In a particularly preferred form of the invention, the gray colored glass is characterized by the presence of the coloring agents in an amount corresponding to the following proportions (expressed as a percentage by weight of the glass in the form indicated)

Within the preferred limits defined above, it is possible to form a glass whose total light transmission for the illuminant A (TLA4) is greater than 70%.
The glass corresponding to the more restricted coloring agent concentration range defined above is particularly effective since it combines sufficiently low energy transmission properties to avoid overheating the interior of a vehicle, and transmission significant light perfectly meeting the minimum standards of such a transmission at the front of a vehicle.
These properties
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
make the glass that has them perfectly suitable for use in a windshield as well as as front side windows of vehicle
Such glass is preferably used in the form of sheets having a thickness of 2 mm for laminated windscreens, 3 mm for the front side windows and more than 4 mm for the rear side windows of vehicles as well as for the building.
Among the dyes used, the ferrous iron Fe2 + is the only absorbent in the infrared domain. Under normal glass production conditions, the quantities of dyes are limited to meet the minimum light transmission standards at the front of a vehicle, do not allow a sufficient Fe concentration to be reached for absorption in the infrared range satisfactorily limits the heating of the passenger compartment of the vehicle. To increase the absorption rate in the infrared range, ie to reduce the energy transmission of glass, a reducing agent is incorporated into the batch and the level of sodium sulphate, used to refine the glass , is adapted to limit its oxidizing action.
We thus privilege the Fe2 + ions compared to the Fe3 + and therefore the absorption in the infrared. In addition to coke, other reducing or containing reducing materials can be used, such as slag (sulfides).
The vitrifiable composition for obtaining the glass according to the present invention is characterized in that it comprises coke, in an amount corresponding to the following proportions (expressed as a percentage by weight of the sand belonging to the vitrifiable mixture)

The glasses according to the present invention can be manufactured by traditional methods. As raw materials, natural materials, recycled glass, slag or a combination of these can be used.
The dyes are not necessarily added in the form indicated, but this manner of giving the quantities of coloring agents added, in equivalents in the forms indicated, corresponds to current practice. In practice, iron is added in the form of a hotpot, cobalt is added in the form of hydrated sulfate, such as CoSOTHzO or CoSO. 6H20 and the selenium is added in elementary form or in the form of selenite such as Na2SeO3 or ZnSeO Other elements are sometimes present as impurities in the raw materials used to manufacture the glass according to the invention (for example from

manganese oxide in proportions of the order of 50 ppm), whether in natural materials,
in recycled glass or in slag, but when the presence of these impurities does not give the glass properties outside the limits defined above, these glasses are considered to be in accordance with the present invention.
The present invention will be illustrated by the specific examples of compositions according to the invention which follow.
