STROOMBEHOUDSKETEN
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

23 een 12 C bus ; en 24 een adres/databus 25 een microtelefoon ; 26 een haakschakelaar ; 27 een handvrije microtelefoon ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
EMI4.1
is.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

POWER CONSERVATION CHAIN
The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for maintaining the power in a telephone set.
Telephone devices limit the amount of power that can be consumed by an inactive telephone connected to the telephone line. In Australia, this line current in the off-line condition is limited to 50 micro amperes. Modern telephone sets, especially those that provide additional functions, include a microprocessor and electrical memories as well as other functional chains that require some power when the unit is not connected to the line. Thus, there is a problem to provide the additional current for these devices without exceeding the permissible line current in the off-line condition.
An object of the present invention is to provide a method and apparatus for reducing the power consumption in a microprocessor controlled telephone set in the on-hook state.
According to the invention, there is provided a method of controlling the power consumption in a telephone set comprising a microprocessor having at least one working state and a low power state in which the microprocessor consumes less power than in the working state, the method comprising detecting when the telephone is not connected to the line and to generate a first control signal which switches the microprocessor to the low power state.
According to a further aspect of the invention, there is provided a telephone set comprising a microprocessor which is switchable between at least a working state and a low power state by a first control signal, the set comprising scanning means
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to detect whether or not the device is connected to the line, the sensing means generating the first control signal to switch the microprocessor to the low power state when the device is not connected to the line.
In order that the invention could be carried out easily, an embodiment thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: 1 is a block diagram representing functional blocks of a telephone set in which the invention is applied; Fig. 2 shows details of the control logic of FIG. 1

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
23 a 12 C bus; and 24 an address / data bus 25 a micro telephone; 26 a hook switch; 27 a hand-free micro phone;
A capacitor C1 serves to store power for the device when FET 3 forms an open circuit. A Zener diode Z limits the charge on Cl.
When the telephone microtelephone 25 is plugged in, the hook switch 26 activates the line switch control circuit 5, thereby bringing the line switch 3 into the open state. In that state, the current source 4 provides a current around the open line switch 3 and this current is used to charge the capacitor C1 through a current path passing through the line switch control circuit 5.
When this telephone is connected for the first time, all voltages in the telephone are on OV. The current of 45A flows into the line switch control circuit 5 to make the FET line switch 3 conductive at cold start.
When this telephone is not connected to the line, D1 prevents Cl from supplying power to the transmission chain 6.
The capacitor C1 applies a voltage of, for example, 8.2 Volts, as determined by the Zener diode Z 1, to the voltage regulator 10 which provides a regulated power supply of, for example, 3 V to the processor 13 and the other devices connected to the output of the control circuit 10 are connected.
The microprocessor 13 may preferably be an 8-bit microcontroller mounted on a single chip, as used in conjunction with the Philips R2C bus voice described in the Philips publication P83CL410 of September 1991. Pages 15 to 17 of this publication describe the free and low power states.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The microprocessor 13 in FIG. 1 has three possible states with different power consumption: the working state in which the power consumption is 2.5 mA; the free state in which the current consumption is 1. mA; and the .. low power state in which the power consumption is 10 / YES
EMI4.1
is.
When the micro phone is disconnected from the device, the microprocessor must first be in the low power state to ensure that the power demand does not exceed the allowable 50 / YES power supply.
However, the processor cannot remain in the low power state for all its time since certain functions in the off-line condition (clock keeping, key press) require the processor to be briefly in operating and idle states brought.
Such functions consume power, as they require the operation of the microprocessor. An adapted implementation of hardware and software ensures that this power requirement is kept minimal in the hooked state.
The microprocessor switches between the three states, namely the operating state, the free state and the low power state by a combination of software commands and interruptions. The microprocessor has a register (not shown) which controls the state in which the microprocessor is. If the microprocessor is in the operating state, and the zero bit of the register is set, the microprocessor will transition to the free state. If bit one of the register is set while the microprocessor is in the operating state, the microprocessor will transition to the low power state.
The microprocessor can be awakened from the low power state, or by interruptions (keyboard array elements are coupled to respective interrupt input pins (not
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
shown) of the microprocessor where the clock is connected to a further interrupt input (not shown) of the microprocessor) or by a reset signal (generated by the hook switch, the clock, or when the device is receiving power for the first time).
As stated in the Philips publication, the state of the microprocessor is controlled by two bits PD and IDL of the register. The microprocessor is brought into the low power state by setting PD (bit 1 of the register). This is the last instruction executed before entering the low power state. The interrupt input pins of the keyboard and the interrupt input pins of the clock cause the register to be released by internal hardware of the microprocessor, thus switching the microprocessor from low power state to the operating state.
The processor is also switched from the low power state to the working state by a reset signal generated by the hook switch transition from the hooked state to the hooked state, by the clock or when the telephone first receives power.
A second device that consumes a large amount of current is the ROM memory 21. When this ROM memory 21 is addressed, it consumes 8mA. If not used it consumes a current of the order of 10pua. The microprocessor 13 accesses the ROM memory 21 when the storage authorization pin (PSEN) of the microprocessor program is low. However, PSEN is low when the microprocessor is in the low power state. Thus, the ROM memory 21 would be selected when the microprocessor is in the low power state and consume excessive power. To prevent the ROM memory 21 from being selected in low power state
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
control logic 16 shown in FIG. 2 placed between the microprocessor 13 and the ROM memory 21.
The control logic 16 consists of the NOR gates 31 and 32, transistor TR1, capacitor C2 and resistor R1 pin of the. microprocessor 13. The first input of gate 31 is connected to PSEN and the second input of gate 31 is connected to the collector of transistor TR1 which is connected to the 3 Volts supply via the resistor R1. The capacitor C2 is connected in parallel with the collector to emitter path of transistor TR1. The base of transistor TR1 is connected to the authorization output (ALE) of the address lock of the microprocessor 13.
The output ALE serves to lock the low byte of the address while accessing the external memory and is transmitted at a constant frequency equal to 1/6 of the oscillator frequency when the microprocessor is operating. Thus, when the microprocessor is operating, the output ALE pulses at about 600 kHz. If C2 is of the order of 300 pF and the resistor R1 of the order of 300 kΩ, then the impedance of C2 is small with respect to that of the resistor R1 and the collector of transistor TR1 is at about 0V as the microprocessor 13 in operation. Thus, the output of the gate 31 is PSEN and the output of the gate 32 is PSEN.
When the microprocessor 13 is in the low power state, ALE is low so that the collector of transistor TR1 is at 3 Volts, while PSEN is low. Thus, the output of gate 31 is low and the output of gate 32 is high. The output of port 32 provides a logic signal CE to control access to ROM21, thus ensuring that when the microprocessor 13 is in the low power state, the ROM memory 21 is not accessed and thus consumes less power.
In a further improvement, the microprocessor 13 is programmed to switch from the low power state to the operating state as any
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the keyboard key is pressed. This is accomplished by connecting the keyboard lines to the interrupt inputs of the microprocessor 13. Thus, it is not necessary for the microprocessor 13 to continuously monitor the state of the keys, which would require the microprocessor to be in the operating state whereby it would draw excessive current.
The sequence of events caused when a key is pressed is as follows. The microprocessor makes all keypad lock outputs high and then goes into low power state (in case the telephone is not connected to the line). When a key is pressed, one of the interrupt inputs goes high waking the microprocessor. The microprocessor will then release the keyboard lock and then slide a high state through the lock outputs. If only one key is pressed then only one of the interrupt inputs will detect a high on one of the 8 pulses. This determines the test in a certain way (if more than one button is pressed, this is not taken into account).
The latch outputs are then raised, the interrupts are set to detect a negative edge, and the microprocessor returns to the idle state waiting for the key to be released.
