STROOMBESTURINGSKETEN
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 1 toont een ruststroomregelketen volgens de uitvinding.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

POWER CONTROL CHAIN
This invention relates to a quiescent current circuit for supplying power to a quiescent electronic circuit. This quiescent current may be necessary to supply power to circuit elements, such as a memory or processor, while the chain is not in use. A known circumstance in which the need for such quiescent current arises is in the case of an ON-HOOK telephone, and the invention will be described in that connection.
Many modern telephones include memories and processors and are connected to the telephone line via a line switch that is open when the telephone is ON HOOK. The unit receives power from the exchange via the telephone line, so that when it is ON-HOOK, it receives no power.
One possibility of applying power to the telephone in the ON-HOOK condition is to apply a large resistance (-1 MΩ) in parallel with the line switch. However, this solution is not
EMI1.1
always acceptable. In Australia, there is a requirement that quiescent currents must be kept less than à, so that this resistance must limit the current to this value at the maximum line voltage, which may be of the order of 50V. However, if two telephones are connected in parallel with a line and one of the telephones is in the OFF-HOOK state, the line voltage may drop to, for example, 10V.
This means that the quiescent current for the telephone in the ON-HOOK state decreases in proportion to the change in line voltage. This can cause the quiescent current to drop below the value required for the telephone current flow. On the other hand, if the resistance is chosen such that at a minimum line voltage
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
sufficient current is supplied, the current at maximum line voltage may exceed the permissible threshold.
This disclosure discloses a quiescent current control circuit for controlling the quiescent current applied to a load from an electric power source, the control circuit comprising measuring means for measuring the quiescent current, and the measuring means causing impedance control means to increase a series impedance between the source and the load if the measuring means determine that the quiescent current has exceeded a first threshold level.
Fig. 1 shows a quiescent current control circuit according to the invention.
In FIG. 1 is an ON-HOOK load L1, for example a telephone, with a source VS of electrical power, for example a telephone line, connected via a switch S1, for example the line switch, and a diode D1, and is an OFF-HOOK load L2, for example a telephone voice chain also linked to the US. In the case of an electronic switch, S1 can be controlled by a microphone telephone sensing circuit which closes S1 through the wire W1 opens, depending on whether the micro telephone is in OFF-HOOK or ON-HOOK mode. The wire W1 can also be used to switch S1 in case the device includes a hands-free control switch.
When the micro phone is in the ON-HOOK state, S1 is open, so that the device's memory is powered by the quiescent current circuit. The quiescent current circuit includes first, second and third transistors T1, T2 and T3, resistors R1, R2 and R3 and a capacitor C1.
Under normal operating conditions, T1, T2 and T3 are polarized in their linear region. In one embodiment, R1 and R3 are each of the order of 5MQ and R2 is of the order of 14KQ. The main quiescent current path extends to the load L1 via R2 and the collector-emitter path of T3. Thus, the supply voltage VS is taken over R2, VCE of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
T3 and about the load (VL). The operating point of T3 has been chosen such that for a nominal line voltage VS of 50V the quiescent current will be à. This means that (45uAx14000Q) Volts is taken over R2, such that the remaining voltage (50-VR2) is taken over T3 and the load L1.
VR20. 5V and the load voltage VL is an order of magnitude smaller. Thus, the main body of VS is recorded over T3 (-47V). T3 is controlled by the current passing through T1 and T1 is in turn controlled by T2.
T2 is controlled by the voltage drop across R2 and this corresponds to VBE for T2.
Thus, if the quiescent current through R2 increases, VBE increases for T2. When VBE T2 exceeds the drive voltage, T2 starts to conduct. This causes a reduction in VCE for T2 equal to VBE for T1. Thus, the emitter-collector current of T1 is reduced, thereby reducing the base current for T3. As a result, the collector-emitter current of T3 is stabilized and prevented from exceeding the predetermined threshold.
The quiescent current is determined by the formula:
EMI3.1
If VS drops to a level for which VR2 <VBEperationW (about 0.5 Volts) for T2, T2 will trip and will no longer contribute to the quiescent current.
The quiescent current Ib is determined by the amplification factors of T1 and T3, so that:
EMI3.2
where ss1 is the gain of T1, and ss3 is the gain of T3.
Capacitor C1 filters the noise from the line.
