<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Mechanical delay mechanism for switching off an automatic electric kettle, which makes it possible to generate an acoustic signal when the water is boiling.
This invention makes it possible to provide an electric kettle, which is provided with a thermally / mechanically acting automatic switch-off of the heating as soon as the water boils, with a delay of this switch-off, such that sufficient time is available to use the steam generated by the boiling water to emit a beep to indicate that the water is boiling.
Field of application of the invention are all kinds of kettles with automatic shut-off as soon as the water boils.
These kettles are almost all equipped with a thermally / mechanically operating thermostat: see GB 2 117 568
GB 2 128 029
GB 2 149 217
GB 2 170 956
GB 2 176 055 All of the above cited have the following procedure in common: as soon as the water boils, hot steam arrives on a bimetal which deforms due to the heat stresses caused by the steam, and this deformation of the bimetal causes the opening of electrical contacts through a mechanical transmission and thus cut off the electricity supply.
An alternative method is the electronic control as in GB 2 185 161 The latter can be provided with an electronic delay, so that the cut off of the electricity supply is delayed.
Although the electronic method offers many possibilities, it is hardly used for electric kettles because of: - the considerably higher cost price, compared to the method quoted above of the thermal / mechanical thermostat.

The object of the present invention is to provide a delay of the automatic shutdown in the boiling of water and also to use this longer time that the water is at a boiling point, in order to have an acoustic signal generated by the steam, so that the user is automatically informed that the water has reached boiling temperature.
The invention differs from the prior art in that no thermal / mechanical automatic shutdown is known which includes a delay system and thus allows the steam of the longer boiling water to be used to generate an acoustic signal.
An embodiment of the invention is elucidated hereinafter, with reference to the attached drawings, in which: Fig. 1 shows a cross section of an electrically heated boiler 1, provided with a heating element 2, a thermal / mechanical thermostat 3, spout 4 with folding closure 5, which is designed as a whistle. The thermostat is provided with a bimetal steam sensor 6 which effects the automatic shutdown of electricity supply to the heating element 2. The steam generated by the boiling water is passed via a channel 7 to the bimetal steam sensor 6.
This channel 7 is provided with a mechanically operating automatic closing device 8 comprising a housing 9 consisting of an upper chamber 10 in which a ball 11 is located, serving as a closing valve of the opening 12, and a lower chamber 13 provided with lateral openings 14 along which the penetrates steam as well as a deflector 15 which prevents the splashes of water on the surface of the boiling water from closing off the side openings 14 and thus possibly the steam
EMI2.1
could prevent passage. Fig. 2: shows the mechanically operating automatic closing device 8 t, where the ball 11 closes the opening 12, and thus prevents that
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the steam acts on the bimetal steam sensor 6 via the channel 7.
In that state, all steam escapes through the whistle 5 of the spout 4, and an acoustic signal is generated which signals that the water is boiling. The boiling water is heated further and the steam pressure in the boiler builds up further. Fig. 3: shows the mechanically operating automatic shut-off device 8, in which the ball 11 clears the opening 12, due to the fact that the built-up steam pressure in the boiler has reached a level at which the ball 11 is lifted, thus opening the passage for the steam to the bimetal steam sensor 6 which then effects the automatic shutdown of the electricity supply to the heating element.
In summary, the cycle proceeds as follows: - normally the ball 11 closes the opening 12, so that when the water comes to a boil, the steam generated escapes via the whistle seal 5 and generates an acoustic signal.
- as the water continues to boil, more pressure builds up in the boiler, at a certain point this increasing pressure overcomes the weight of the ball 11, and presses it upwards, thus opening the opening 12 for the steam discharge to the bimetal steam sensor 6 which in turn effects the automatic thermal / mechanical shutdown of the electricity supply to the heating element.
Once this is done, no more steam is generated, so the steam pressure is released, and the ball 11 again closes the opening 12, which has the additional advantage of closing off the part of the boiler in which the thermostat and electrical components are located. for further access to warm damp vapors.
