<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The invention relates to the construction of needles for medical use, in particular to a protective construction which makes the needles safer during manipulation and after use. Current needles are usually for single use and are packaged sterile. They are placed in a separate tube for protection, in which they must also be inserted again after use in order to prevent needlestick injuries.
Accident figures show that many needle-sticking accidents occur when manipulating needles (mainly re-cutting, i.e. replacing the cartridge) and when leaving unprotected needles. In the U.S., this leads to an average of 18,000 infected people and 250 deaths a year from illnesses contracted from an infected needle. Besides this human suffering is the enormous cost of $ 750 million per year, without indirect costs.
Research and after consultation with insurance companies including OMOB, the magazine VIF / Express, the NVVA (National Association for the Prevention of Accidents at Work), the Ministry of Employment and Labor and various University Hospitals, show that this problem also occurs in Belgium. By-products such as safety containers and funnels for re-cutting have also proved to be without much effect: the re-cutting has become a habit that can hardly be learned.
The invention comprises a construction in which the needle can no longer be cut in the traditional manner, and thus it is no longer possible to pierce it.
She mainly looks at the 3 most common needle types: - the medication needle, - the usually thinner injection needle, - the blood name needle, with 2 needles. o. v. standing together, which is likely to pose the greatest risk because it will come into contact with blood under normal use.
However, other needle types are not excluded.
What follows describes how the blood name needle is protected. For single needles, the protection of the nonexistent part (Needle B) must of course be omitted.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The foregoing and other features are achieved according to the invention: 1 / as for the needle with which the patient is punctured (we call this needle A in the drawings) 2 / as for the needle on the side of the suction tube.
(we call this needle B in the drawings) 1 / Needle A is secured by replacing the traditional protective sleeve with a sufficiently wide elastic casing in rubber or a material with such characteristics. This sheath is permanently attached to the foot of the needle.
At the front in or over the casing there is a reinforced and hollowed top made of metal, plastic or a material with the same characteristics, provided with a lip. The tip of the needle rests in the hollow of this top. This top can be inside or outside the case. When in rest, the sheath should be slightly stretched, so that the needle cannot get out of the reinforced tip. The purpose of the entire construction is that the needle should only leave the cover on one side, i.e. the one opposite the tab.
Operation is as follows: - The needle A is packed sterile in the cover. The needle is kept in the cover because it is slightly tensioned. (Picture 1) - The needle is put on the syringe with your foot. The syringe is held in one hand and the casing is pulled out further with the other hand, d. w. z. forward. For this purpose, a tab is provided on the casing to facilitate holding. The needle is now released from the reinforced tip.
(Drawing 2) - Then pull the cover aside with the tab.
(Drawing 3) Here are variations in embodiments: a / Either the cover already has a slip in the side, through which the needle can go out; b / Either the needle is pierced with the needle.
- Finally, pull the cover by the tab backwards (= towards the syringe), so that the full needle is released.
(Drawing 4) - The lancing action can happen.
- After the puncture action, pull the cover again with the tab
EMI2.1
forward and then let the casing "snap back" the reinforced top is over the needle tip again.
Thanks to the elastic features, the top is fixed over the needle A again, so that it cannot come out freely without manipulation.
2 / Contrary to current blood-name needles, whose plastic center element is usually round, the outline of this plastic center element (ME on the drawings) has the shape of a geometric figure, other than a circle or oval, to ensure a better grip and allow to unscrew the double needle after securing the needle A from the suction tube and then secure the needle B and then discard it completely.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
A fine hinged "arm" is provided in plastic on this middle element (ME). This arm is slightly longer than needle B and also has a strong point at the front, through which the needle cannot pass. (Drawing 5) Lengthwise, the arm is hollowed out so that it can be snapped over the needle B with clips, preferably single use, and thus included after use.
The use is as follows: - The needle B, as currently covered with rubber, is packed sterile in the cover. The safety arm is along the needle and covers the tip, but the arm is not snapped.
- In order to be able to screw needle B onto the plastic middle element (ME) by means of the screw thread, fold the arm away from the needle (Drawing 6).
The needle can be screwed onto the suction tube in the traditional way.
- Then needle A is released, the puncture action and the suction proceed according to the known methods and needle A is secured again as described.
- After this, the double needle can be removed from the suction tube in complete safety. Then needle B is secured again by pushing the upright arm over the needle again and pushing until it clicks through the clips. Needle B is now in the hollow arm and can no longer be removed if the clips are of the former type.
Drawings 7 and 8 show respectively sections of the risk side of the needle covered by the cover with the cover in front of it and of the needle over which the clips attach in the center.
