<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Starre makromolekulen vertonen vaak vloeibaar kristallijn gedrag (vloeibaar kristallijne polymeren of LCP's) in oplossing (lyotrope LCP's) of in de smelt (thermotrope LCP's).
EMI2.1
chloor-p-phenyleen tereftaalamide), poly poly phenyleen-p, benzamide), poly phenyleen benzobisthiazol), poly- oxadiazol), of co-poly- tereftaalamide).
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
EMI4.4
5 , ss
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

METHOD FOR PREPARING MOLECULAR COMPOSITES
The invention relates to a method of preparing molecular composites by partitioning a rigid polymer into a thermoplastic polymer matrix on a molecular scale.
EMI1.1
This is described in J.
Macromol. 591-615 (1980). at which
Sci-Phys., B17 (4), poly (p-phenylene terephthalamide) and nylon-6 are dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid to obtain a molecular composite from this solution. Instead of concentrated sulfuric acid, such a process also often uses methanesulfonic acid.
The disadvantage of this is that it is necessary to work with very aggressive solvents, which makes this process unattractive.
The applicant has now found that a molecular composite of a rigid polymer in a thermoplastic polymer matrix can be obtained by dissolving the rigid polymer in a liquid lactam in the presence of an alkali metal lactamate and / or an alkaline earth metal lactamate, after which a molecular composite is polymerized by the lactam formed.
The advantage of this is that it is not necessary to work with aggressive or non-aggressive solvents which have to be removed afterwards.
Examples of alkaline earth metal lactamates are magnesium bis lactamate and lactam magnesium bromide.
Examples of suitable alkali metal lactamates are sodium lactamate and potassium lactamate. Potassium lactamate is preferably used for dissolving the rigid polymer in the lactam and in particular potassium caprolactamate. This dissolution takes place at a temperature of 15-350 ° C and preferably between 75-300 ° C.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The polymerization of the lactam takes place at a temperature of 100-350 ° C, in particular at 125-300 ° C, and is preferably carried out in the presence of an activator.
The amount of alkali metal lactamate and / or alkaline earth metal lactamate used in the present invention ranges from 0.001-3 moles per kilogram of reaction mixture and preferably from 0.01-2 moles per kilogram.
The principle of molecular composites as self-reinforcing plastics consists of the molecular distribution of rigid macromolecules in a thermoplastic polymer matrix such as nylon-6, so that they act as reinforcing fibers with a high aspect ratio (high molecular weight) and inherently good fiber properties (stiffness and strength). of the primary CC bonds in the molecular backbone). Aspekt ratio and fiber stiffness and fiber strength are also the criteria that determine the mechanical behavior of composites.
Rigid macromolecules often exhibit liquid crystalline behavior (liquid crystalline polymers or LCPs) in solution (lyotropic LCPs) or in the melt (thermotropic LCPs). LCPs are known for their high stiffness and strength towards the orientation of the molecules, such as the strong aramid fibers spun from a liquid crystalline solution of poly (p-phenylene terephthalamide), poly (2-
EMI2.1
chloro-p-phenylene terephthalamide), poly polyphenylene-p, benzamide), polyphenylene benzobisthiazole), polyoxadiazole), or co-polyterephthalamide).
However, direct blending of these types of rigid polymers with a flexible matrix is prevented by the thermodynamic immiscibility between the rigid and flexible polymer chains. To solve this problem
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
molecular composites are prepared from a highly dilute and homogeneous solution of a rigid polymer such as poly (pphenylene terephthalamide) or poly-p-aminobenzoic acid and the flexible matrix such as nylon-6 in a common solvent such as concentrated sulfuric acid or methanesulfonic acid. In order to obtain a molecular distribution, this solution is extruded in excess water, the polymer blend precipitating so rapidly that phase separation is substantially prevented.
Fibers of such a blend can also be spun from a common solution in, for example, methanesulfonic acid and then rapidly coagulate in a water bath.
The rigid polymers useful in the present invention include poly (pphenylene terephthalamide), poly-p-aminobenzoic acid, poly (m-phenylene isophthalamide), and co-poly (p-phenylene-3,4'-oxydiphenylene terephthalamide) and / or mixtures thereof. Preferably poly (p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA)
EMI3.1
and / or co-polyterephthalamide) and in particular co-polyphenylene-3, terephthalamide).
The amounts of the rigid polymers that can be dissolved in the thermoplastic polymer matrix range from 0.01-30 wt. % t. o. v. the total reaction mixture. In particular, 1-25 wt. % of the rigid polymer dissolved and preferably 5-20 wt. %.
The lactams useful in the present invention are lactams having at least five ring atoms such as α-pyrrolidone, ε-caprolactam, C-substituted caprolactam, capryl lactam, laurinolactam or mixtures of said lactams. Z-caprolactam is preferably used.
The activator uses lactam blocked polyisocyanates or acyl lactams in the present invention. Preferably, the combinations of lactam-blocked polyisocyanate with alkali metal lactamate are used
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
acyllactam with alkaline earth metal lactamate.
The term "lactam-blocked polyisocyanates" means the reaction product of a polyisocyanate with a lactam, more in particular caprolactam. In principle, it is assumed that virtually all isocyanate groups have reacted with a lactam molecule to form the compound:
EMI4.1
wherein: - (-L) an unopened lactam ring, - R represents a cyclic alkyl, aralkyl, alkaryl or aryl group, whether or not cyclic, and - n represents a number greater than or equal to 2.
In general, polyisocyanates with at least two isocyanate groups and 4-25 carbon atoms are applicable. Preferably, aliphatic diisocyanates such as 1,5-hexanediisocyanate and 1,6-hexanediisocyanate are used, but araliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic isocyanates are also
EMI4.2
applicable. Examples are isophorone diisocyanate, 2, and 2, and 4, (MDI) and polyphenylene polymethylene polyisocyanates.
The term acyllactam is understood to mean a compound of the following formula: L-Y-Ra - (Y'-L) b wherein:
EMI4.3
L an unopened lactam ring, Y and Y each an acyl group, more particularly
EMI4.4
5, ss
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
- R whether or not cyclic alkyl, aralkyl, alkaryl or an aryl group, - a represents a number greater than or equal to 0 and - b represents a number greater than or equal to 1.
Examples of suitable acyllactam compounds are terephthaloylbiscaprolactam, adipoylbiscaprolactam, oxalylbiscaprolactam and isophthaloylbiscaprolactam.
In the preparation of the molecular composites, substances may also be present which improve the processability of the reaction mixture.
Examples are inorganic salts such as lithium chloride which can reduce the viscosity of the reaction mixture.
In the preparation of the molecular composite, it may be essential to conduct the polymerization in the presence of one or more compounds normally used in nylon polymers, such as fillers, plasticizers, flame extinguishers, stabilizers, and other reinforcing fibers, such as carbon or glass fibers. The present invention is illustrated below with reference to some examples.
The following chemicals and materials are used in the examples:
Twaron pulp from Akzo, which consists of PPTA fibers with a diameter of 1 to 10 Mm, as examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The
EMI5.1
intrinsic viscosity of the PPTA is 6. dl / g in 96% H 2 SO 4 at and at a concentration of 0. g / dl.
Technora T320 chopped fibers from Teijin.
Technora is a PPTA-like aramid:
EMI5.2
co-poly terephthalamide). The fibers have a diameter of about 10 µm and a length of 3 mm. The intrinsic viscosity of the Technora is 3.5 dl / g in 96% H 2 SO 4 at 250C and at a concentration of 0.1 g / dl.
Dried E-caprolactam
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Sodium lactamate (NaL), this is a solution in E-caprolactam with a Na + concentration of 1. 39 mol / kg.
Potassium lactamate (KL), also a solution in E-caprolactam with a K + concentration of 1 mol / kg.
V5, a solution of hexamethylene diisocyanate in E-caprolactam at a concentration of 2 mol / kg.
Reference Example A and Examples 1 and 2
Twaron pulp, ε-caprolactam and sodium lactamate were collected in a glass flask in the amounts shown in Table 1. The flask was heated to 140 ° C, and the mixture was stirred with an Ultraturrax mixer.
Immediately after adding the Twaron pulp, the solution turned yellow / orange and the viscosity visibly increased.
After 60 minutes of stirring, undissolved fibers were no longer visible, and the solution was cooled and stored under nitrogen atmosphere. The solution was then warmed again to 110 ° C, and the correct amount of V5 was added thereto (see Table 1), the solution was quickly mixed and poured into a plate mold at a temperature of 160 ° C. After 5 minutes, the mold was opened and the hot plate was taken out of the mold.
Rods were sawn from the cast plates to which bending tests were carried out according to ASTM D790, the bending modulus (Ebend) of the various samples is shown in Table 1. Also cryogenic fracture surfaces of the cast plates with SEM were examined, no undissolved fibers were observed up to a resolution of about 0.1 µm.

no more undissolved Technora fibers were visible in the solution (indicated in tops with table 2), V5 was added and the temperature of the mixing chamber was increased to 220 C. The polymerization could be monitored via the torque of the Plasticorder; moreover, the increase in melt viscosity was also visually noticeable. After the moment had stabilized after some time (tpolym in Table 2), the melt was removed from the kneader and cooled in the ambient air. After drying, plates were pressed from the material at 220 ° C, from which rods for the ASTM D790 bending tests were sawn.
Cryogenic fracture surfaces of the pressed plates were examined with SEM, and were sometimes found to still contain some undissolved fibers, although it was clear with certainty that the majority of the
