<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Moisture loss measuring device and buffer used therewith.
The invention relates to a moisture loss measuring device, in particular for measuring moisture loss of products in a cooling space, which device comprises collecting means for collecting condensation or defrosting water, a water flow meter and a discharge pipe between the collecting means and the water flow meter.
Fruit is normally stored in cold rooms under a given atmosphere. During storage, the fruit releases moisture and the fruit becomes limp due to moisture loss is one of the main causes of loss of quality. Insufficient dehumidification can affect storage. That is why it is advisable to measure this moisture loss. The amount of moisture that fruit releases depends on the state of the peel and depends on the growing conditions of the fruit. This amount of moisture is hardly affected by the relative humidity.
The moisture loss is measured by measuring the amount of condensation or defrosting water that is discharged into the cooling compartment via the cooler's drip tray. The measured quantity is introduced into a computer that checks whether the moisture loss meets the requirements and intervenes if necessary, such as by applying water to the floor of the cooling space, intervening in the cooling or the like.
A simple way to measure the amount of condensation or defrost water is in a water flow meter. However, such a water flow meter is not capable of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
accurately measure very small flow rates, such as the dripping that occurs at the beginning of the defrosting of the evaporator in the refrigerator.
The object of the invention is to overcome this drawback and to provide a moisture loss measuring device which allows an accurate measurement but is still relatively simple in construction and inexpensive.
This object is achieved according to the invention in that a buffer is mounted in the discharge pipe which can retain a certain amount of water before allowing this water to pass to the flow meter at a sufficient flow rate.
In a special embodiment of the invention, the buffer comprises a reservoir into which a part of the discharge pipe connecting to the collecting means opens, while the remaining part of the discharge pipe connects via an opening on the bottom of this reservoir, and a valve in the reservoir mounted to close this opening.
Preferably, the buffer in the reservoir contains a level sensor.
In addition, the buffer expediently contains means which communicate with the level sensor and which, when the level sensor detects that a certain level has been reached, open said valve in the open position.
The valve expediently comprises a valve element and a vertical valve rod and the aforementioned means comprise an electromagnet which, when energized, can lift the valve rod and thus the valve.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
A bell that forms an air chamber may be mounted on this valve rod.
The invention also relates to a buffer intended for use in the moisture loss measuring device according to any of the previous embodiments.
Other details and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of a moisture loss measuring device of a buffer according to the invention used therewith. This description is given by way of example only and does not limit the invention. The reference numbers relate to the appended figure, which schematically represents a moisture loss measuring device according to the invention.
The moisture loss measuring device shown in the appended figure mainly comprises a collecting tray 1 which is arranged under the evaporator 2 of the cooling device in a fruit cooling room, a water flow meter 3 and a discharge pipe consisting of an upper pipe section 4 which opens on the collecting bowl 1 and a lower pipe section 5 connecting to the water flow meter 3 and a buffer 6 mounted between the pipe sections 4 and 5.
The water flow meter 3 contains a water counter 7 of a known type which, for example, transmits 10 pulses per liter to an electric counting system 8. To guarantee a good and accurate operation of this water counter, a minimum flow is required. This is achieved by the buffer 6 which first collects the water until a certain amount is reached and then drains it.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
This buffer 6 consists of a reservoir 9 which is provided with an opening 10 in its bottom, a float sensor 11 which is mounted in the wall of the reservoir 9 at a distance above the bottom and a valve 12 which can close the opening 10.
The upper conduit section 4 opens into the reservoir 9, while the lower conduit section 5 connects to the bottom of the reservoir 9 and expands through the opening 10 on the inside thereof.
The valve 12 contains a valve element 13, the underside of which is covered with an elastic membrane 14 which can close the opening 10 in a leak-proof manner. The valve element 13 is attached to a vertical valve rod 15 to which a bell 16 is attached just above the valve element 13. The valve rod 15 protrudes through an opening 17 in the top wall of the reservoir 11. The bell 16 has an outer diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the valve element 13 and is open at the bottom to form an air chamber.
On top of the reservoir 9, an electro-pulling magnet 18 is mounted around the upper end of the valve rod 15 and is controlled by the float sensor 11.
The operation of the buffer 6 is as follows: Normally the electromagnet 18 is not energized and due to the weight of the valve rod 15 the valve 12 is in a closed position with the opening 10 closed in a leak-proof manner. Water, which flows either dropwise or continuously via the pipe section 4 of the collecting tray 1, is collected in the reservoir 9, whereby the level in the reservoir increases.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
When the level reaches the float sensor 11, it causes the pull magnet 18 to be energized for a moment, thereby briefly lifting the rod 15 and thus the entire valve 12. This allows the water from the reservoir 9 to flow to the water flow meter 3 via the pipe section 5 at a sufficiently large flow, so that the water counter 7 allows an accurate measurement.
Due to the upward pressure exerted on the membrane 14 and the clock 16, the entire valve 12 remains in its highest position even though the water drops further below the level of the float sensor 11.
When the level in the reservoir 9 reaches a certain lower value, the upward pressure has become too small, as a result of which the valve 12 falls back down and the membrane 14 closes the opening 10. Meanwhile, the float sensor 11 is back in its initial position.
The water level can now rise again until this float sensor 11 changes position again when the water level reaches sensor 11 again.
The above-described buffer 6 ensures that sufficient flow always flows through the water flow meter 3 to allow an accurate measurement and thus makes it possible to use a relatively inexpensive commercially available water flow meter. The construction of the buffer itself is relatively simple and inexpensive.
The invention is by no means limited to the above-described embodiment, and within the scope of the patent application many changes can be made to the described embodiment, including as regards the shape, the composition, the arrangement and the

number of parts used to implement the invention.
