<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Lance for injecting a solid powdery fuel into a shaft furnace.
The present invention relates to a lance for injecting a pulverulent solid fuel into a shaft furnace.
The application envisaged here is essentially, but not exclusively, the injection of powdered coal into a blast furnace.
We know that the cost of coke is playing an increasingly large part in the cost price of pig iron produced in the blast furnace, in particular due to the higher cost of coking coals. For several years, attempts have been made to replace this coke at least partially with cheaper auxiliary fuels, which are injected in particular into the current of hot wind flowing in the blast furnace nozzles. At present, pulverulent coal is the auxiliary fuel which is of greatest economic interest from the point of view of its injection into the blast furnace. This interest is especially marked in the case of non-coking coals.
Conventionally, pulverulent coal is injected into the current of hot wind by means of a lance introduced obliquely into the nozzle.
This lance, sometimes called an injection cane, can be constituted by a simple tube in which circulates the pulverulent coal transported by a stream of nitrogen or pressurized air.
The possibility of injecting powdered coal into a blast furnace, however, currently encounters a physical limit of the order of 180 kg of coal per tonne of pig iron; this limit results in particular from the impossibility of igniting and burning higher quantities of coal under the current injection conditions.
The present invention aims to raise this limit by proposing an injection lance thanks to which the pulverulent solid fuel can be better dispersed in the current of hot wind and therefore ignites more easily and more quickly.

According to the present invention, a lance for injecting a pulverulent fuel into a nozzle of a shaft furnace, which consists of a single tubular conduit traversed by the pulverulent solid fuel, is characterized in that said conduit tubular comprises, at its outlet end, means for dispersing the pulverulent solid fuel in said nozzle.
According to a first embodiment of the lance of the invention, the tubular conduit is cut in a bevel at its outlet end. In general, the oblique outlet section thus obtained is a planar section; it goes without saying, however, that it could have a different profile, for example concave, without departing from the scope of the invention.
In the case where it has a bevelled end, the lance is preferably arranged in the nozzle so that its outlet section is "downwind", that is to say on the side opposite to the arrival of the hot wind. The jet of coal exiting from such a lance bursts laterally, due to the obliquity of the outlet section, and it widely disperses in the current of hot wind.
According to another embodiment, the lance of the invention has a frustoconical end portion, in which is formed at least one diametrical slot.
The outlet section of this lance is in fact composed of the axial outlet orifice and the lateral slots constituting the diametrical slot.
These are generally two in number, but it would not depart from the scope of the invention to provide four or more, which would thus constitute as many crossed diametral slots. The jet of coal leaving a lance which has a diametrical slot is itself spread out in this diametral plane of the lance.
Such a lance will preferably be placed in the nozzle, so that the aforementioned diametral plane is not parallel to the axis of the nozzle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
According to yet another embodiment, the end of the lance of the invention is closed and a lateral orifice is provided in the vicinity of said closed end.
The aforementioned lateral orifice is advantageously a slot, which is formed in the terminal part of the lance, this terminal part possibly also being cylindrical or frustoconical. Said slot is preferably longitudinal or helical.
In the nozzle, this lance will preferably be arranged with its lateral orifice "downwind", that is to say located on the side opposite to the arrival of the hot wind. Here too, the lateral burst of the coal jet favors its dispersion in the current of hot wind.
The invention will now be described in more detail, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which FIG. 1 shows a lance whose end is cut in a bevel; Fig. 2 represents a lance having a tapered split end; and Fig. 3 illustrates a lance closed at its end and provided with a lateral slit.
These figures are schematic representations, without any particular scale, in which the elements which are not strictly necessary for understanding the invention have not been reproduced, for example the cooling systems of the lances. Identical or analogous elements are designated by the same reference numerals in all the figures.
Each of Figs. 1 to 3 shows an injection lance 1 composed of a single tubular conduit, which is introduced obliquely into a nozzle 2 of a blast furnace, not shown. In this nozzle 2 a current of hot wind circulates, the direction of circulation of which is indicated by arrows.
Fig. 1 shows a lance 1, the end of which is cut in a bevel; it is installed in such a way that the oblique outlet section 3 is "downwind" relative to the current of hot wind, that is to say
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
on the side opposite the arrival of the hot wind.
The angle of the bevel can be chosen as a function of the obliquity of the lance, so that the exit section of the lance 1 is perpendicular to the axis of the nozzle 2.
The jet of coal leaving lance 1 bursts laterally with respect to it, as suggested by lines 4 drawn in dotted lines. If the outlet section is perpendicular to the axis of the nozzle, the bursting takes place in a direction generally parallel to this axis, that is to say in the direction of circulation of the hot wind.
The lance 1 illustrated in FIG. 2 has a frustoconical end portion 5, in which a diametrical slot 6 is formed, visible here in a side view.
The jet of coal leaving this lance is spread transversely in the nozzle 2, substantially in an oblique plane perpendicular to the plane of the drawing. The lines 4 drawn in dotted lines schematically show a section through the jet of spread coal.
Fig. 3 illustrates another embodiment of the invention, in which the lance 1 has its end closed by a plate 7 but has, in the vicinity of this plate, a longitudinal slot 8. Here also, the slot 8 is placed "under the wind "compared to the current of hot wind and the jet of coal explodes laterally, as shown by the lines 4 drawn in dotted lines.
Thanks to its particular configuration, the injection lance according to the invention makes it possible to ensure a dispersion of the coal jet clearly greater than with a simple tubular lance. It thus favors the ignition of the coal and makes it possible to increase the quantity of coal injected into the blast furnace.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The invention is however not limited to the embodiments which have just been described and illustrated. It also extends to any variant that a person skilled in the art could imagine, for example as regards the shape and / or the number of slots 6 and 8.
