Dergelijke bedekkingswijzen zijn beschreven in o. a.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR COVERING AN ELECTRONIC OBJECT BY EXTRUSION The invention relates to a method and apparatus for coating an elongated object by extrusion. The intended elongated objects, hereinafter referred to as substrates, are, for example, wires, tapes, tubes or profiles of metal, glass, reinforced or unreinforced plastic or ceramic material.
The covering material is a plastic material, d. w. z. a substance that can be brought into a plastic malleable form, eg a thermoplastic plastic.
It is well known to surround metal wire and the like by extrusion with either a relatively thin or a relatively thick plastic coating. A thermoplastic material, such as nylon, for example, is melted in the extruder and fed to the extruder head with a screw and deposited there continuously on the substrate which passes through an axial bore in the extruder head. Such coatings are described in, among others, U.S. Patents 4,588,546 and 4,838,777.
In some instances, it has proved difficult to ensure a uniform coating thickness on the substrate during this extrusion process. Especially for thin coatings, d. w. z. thinner than 100 µm uniformity becomes problematic. Moreover, when the substrates have a somewhat rough surface, it is more likely to get uncovered places on the substrate more quickly.
In order to realize a coating with the most uniform thickness possible, the use of a single extrusion head according to the prior art requires a relatively long guide channel which, moreover, encloses the continuous substrate with relatively small clearance in order to be able to properly center this substrate in the extrusion head.
However, by applying this little slack it risks
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
substrate to clamp itself in this channel when there are scattered projections on the substrate surface. In certain cases the irregularities (protrusions, and / or hard dust particles lying on the substrate) are dragged in the long, close-fitting centering channels according to the prior art. The particles thus entrained then accumulate in the channel. This phenomenon also leads to clamping of the substrate with possible breakage as a result.
U.S. Patent 4,761,129 discloses coating a substrate in two successive extrusion steps with two different coatings: one on top of the other. The two coating materials are then each supplied from a separate stock to the composite extrusion head.
Surprisingly, it has now been found that splitting the extrusion coating operation into two or more consecutive steps in a manner allows to avoid the risk of uneven coating thickness and of substrate clamping.
Thus, the invention relates to a method of continuously coating a substrate by extrusion with a plasticizable coating material that is fed to a first extrusion head around the substrate and extruded thereon.
Subsequently, the thus coated substrate is fed to a second extrusion head and contacted there from a closed space at the entrance of the second head with a second amount of the same coating material. The amount of coating material that is extruded per unit length of the substrate through the first head is greater than the amount remaining on the substrate after passage through the second head.
In contrast to the method according to U. S. 4,761,129, according to the invention the coating material for both coating steps is thus supplied via a feed channel.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The invention also relates to a device for implementing this method. It includes a housing containing a tubular substrate passage and a coating material supply channel around the exit of said passage to the first extrusion channel formed by the first extrusion head. A second, formed by the second extrusion head, connects to this first extrusion channel. The connection is designed in such a way that there is a closed space between the exit of the first head and the entrance of the second head.
The invention will now be elucidated on the basis of an embodiment with reference to the accompanying figures.
Further details and additional benefits will be clarified.
Figure 1 shows a device according to the invention in longitudinal section according to the direction of passage of the substrate.
Figure 2 is a cross-section of the first extrusion head along line AA in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view of the end face of the second extrusion head with exit hole for coating a wire of round cross section.
The device of Figure 1 is a conventional extruder with hopper, extrusion screw, extrusion head, etc. for coating elongated substrates with a plastic material coating. If the coating material is a thermoplastic plastic, the extruder in its housing 1 additionally comprises suitable heating means for plasticizing the plastic to be extruded.
The device is also provided with a suitable tubular passage 7, known per se, through which the substrate 2 to be coated, e.g. a metal wire, is continuously fed axially. The outlet 9 of this passage 7 opens opposite the entrance of the first extrusion channel 10 which is formed
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
through the extrusion head 4. At this outlet 9, the feed channel 8 also debouches for the meanwhile plasticized coating material 3. The plasticized material is supplied in the known manner under pressure through the extrusion screw (not shown in detail) around the outlet 9 of passage 7. In the first extrusion head 4, a first covering with material 3 then takes place. The substrate thus covered then extends axially through the connecting second extrusion channel 11 which is formed by the second extrusion head 5.
The shape and dimensions of the exit opening 13 of the second head 5 are selected so that the final amount of coating material 3 deposited per unit length of the substrate is smaller than the amount deposited at the exit of the first extrusion channel 10.
Both extrusion heads 4 and 5 connect to each other via an intermediate ring 12 and 12, respectively. an end ring 16 which, using suitable threaded connections, on housing 1 and. are attached to each other.
According to the invention, a closed space 6 is provided between the outlet of the first extrusion head 4 and the inlet 14 of the second head 5, in which plastic material accumulates during the extrusion process. This space 6 thus acts as a kind of second storage space for the coating material and collects the coating surplus that is stripped off through the exit opening 13 of the second head t. o. v. the excess applied by the first head. By storing this excess, the closed space 6 actually forms a pressure space which allows the coating material to be pressed against the substrate surface with greater pressure, thereby favorably affecting the adhesion to this surface and thereby making the outer surface of the coating denser and smoother.
Due to the fact that a thinner coating layer with an even thickness can now be applied, coating material t is also saved. o. the previously used extrusion coating methods.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
For coatings less than 100 µm, especially of nylon, a first ratio A, d. i. the ratio of the surface area of the cross section of exit 9 (perpendicular to the direction of the substrate passage) to that of the substrate is between 1.3 and 10, and preferably between 1.4 and 6 and most preferably even between 1.5 and 5. At the same time, one
EMI5.1
second ratio B, d. the ratio of the area of the cross section of channel 10 to that of the 9 i lie between 1, 05 and 6 and preferably between 1, 08 and 4 and best even between 1, 1 and 3. These proportions apply independently of the shape of the extrusion opening of channel 10 and of the shape of the exit section 9 or of the shape of the substrate section.
The relatively wide ratio limits thus offer the advantage of being able to use the same exit opening 9. and / or the same channel opening 10 for a series of substrates with mutually different substrate section surfaces. Finally, preferably in the same arrangement of the device, a combination of transverse sections will be used. in which the above-mentioned first ratio A is greater than the above-mentioned second ratio B.
The geometric shape of the space 6 is not limited to that shown in Figure 1. For example, the head 4 may terminate on a conical end face which extends almost parallel to the conical entrance face 15 of extrusion head 5.
Example A hot-dip galvanized steel wire 2 with a diameter of 1.5 mm was suitably preheated and passed continuously through an extruder according to figure 1 and covered there with a nylon coating of uniform thickness of 50 m. The molten nylon was at a temperature between 230 and 300 ° C and had a viscosity of 50 to 200 Pa. s at a shear gradient between 400 and 3000 sec '. The outlet 9 had a diameter of 2 mm, the circular extrusion opening of the first extrusion channel 10 was 2.3 mm and the diameter of the extrusion opening 13 of the second head 5 was 1.61 mm. In front of
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
a wire diameter of 0.72 mm and a coating thickness of 40 µm, the opening 13 will have a diameter of 0.81 mm.
The extrusion opening of channel 10 in this case was 2.3 mm and that of the outlet 9 was 1.6 mm. The pressure on the coating material 3 at the inlet of the supply channel 8 is 40 to 200 bar, preferably 50 to 150 bar. This pressure can be adjusted in function of the shape and area of the substrate section and the degree of roughness of the substrate area, as well as of the selected ratios A and / or B. For substrates with a relatively small cross-sectional area, 50 to 100 bar may suffice. For larger cross sections, 90 to 150 bar, in particular up to 120 bar, is recommended. The throughput speed of substrate 2 is between 50 and 500 m / min depending on the quantity to be finished. put nylon.
For the wire sections and coatings of this example, an extrusion speed of about 200 m / min has been found suitable for the thicker wire and about 400 m / min for the thinner wire. These speeds are significantly higher than with conventional nylon extrusion methods for applying a thin adhesive nylon layer.
The extrusion method and device are not limited to covering round wires. According to the invention, profiled wires with an oval, polygonal, crescent or circle segment-shaped cross section can also be coated with a uniform plastic coating. Polyester coatings (e.g., polyethylene terephthalate) or other plastic coatings are also useful when they have analogous viscosity properties to those of the molten nylon described above.
The invention therefore also includes the elongated articles provided with the uniform plastic coating, in particular the nylon or polyester coating with a thickness of less than 100 m.
