<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Device for widening the optical field of a rear-view mirror for a vehicle
EMI1.1
The present invention relates to a device for widening the optical field of a rearview mirror for a vehicle, comprising a housing, containing at least one electric motor, a worm mechanism driven by said electric motor, a pivoting screw in engagement with the worm gear mechanism, guide means and an adjustment element which can be moved by the pivoting screw so as to modify the angular position of the mirror along the guide means, around a ball joint, the motor electric, the above being connected to a power source by means of switches.
It is known that mirrors comprising a flat or curved reflecting surface have a particularly unfavorable blind spot for the safety of overtaking maneuvers. Such mirrors do not offer the driver the possibility of monitoring a sufficient width of roadway on each side of the vehicle to enable the driver to be sure that no other vehicle is approaching from the side. of hers.
Document EP-A-0005437 already discloses a car rear view mirror comprising a one-piece reflecting mirror glass, having two distinct orientation surfaces mounted in a single frame.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The reflecting surfaces are separated from each other by a separation line obtained after removal by sandblasting of the reflecting coating or by pickling.
The separation line is essential because it makes it possible to locate with precision the place where the vehicle is which one sees in the rear view mirror.
However, this rear view mirror has the disadvantage of using two distinct optical fields in which it is difficult to assess with precision the distance at which the objects that are perceived are located.
Document EP-A-0059073 also discloses a device for electrically adjusting the angle of a rear-view mirror for a vehicle. This adjustment device comprises a housing containing an electric motor, a worm mechanism driven by said electric motor, a pivoting screw in engagement with the worm mechanism, guide means and an adjustment element that can be moved by the pivoting screw, so as to modify the angular position of the mirror along the guide means, around a central pivot consisting of a ball joint.
This device for adjusting each mirror is electrically actuated using a directional control lever with four micro-switches (such as a computer joystick) mounted so as to be able to engage and reverse the operation of the two. motors each actuating the mirror to modify it

the angular position with respect to two axes perpendicular to each other. It allows the driver to modify the angular position of the mirror of each of the mirrors, from the passenger compartment, by means of a simple control device. This adjustment device does not, however, provide any solution to the problem of the blind spot of a rear-view mirror.
The present invention aims to solve the problem of the blind spot. It relates to a device of the type described in the first paragraph of this memo.
According to the invention, the switches intended to pass the current or reverse the direction of current flow in the electric motor which rotates the mirror around a vertical axis, are actuated by a relay controlled by a device for controlling the direction lights.
Under the action of the worm screw mechanism, the mirror adjustment elements pivot from a first position suitable for running the vehicle in a straight line to a second laterally deflected position, in the desired direction of operation, by so as to move the optical field of the mirror and cover the path of the operation.
The device according to the invention has the advantage of dispensing the driver from turning around or looking over the shoulder, to check whether the lane is clear before carrying out an overtaking or changing lane maneuver. A simple glance in the mirror or mirrors whose optical field is widened in the direction of the maneuver envisaged by the driver, will allow him to perform the maneuver to change direction safely.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
According to a feature of the invention, the electrical circuit also comprises, mounted in parallel with the switches intended to automatically engage a first motor capable of adjusting the angular position of the mirror around a vertical axis, switches actuated manually. using a directional control lever, of the joystick type of a computer, mounted in a manner known per se from the document EP-A-0059073 to pass a current at will, or reverse the direction of circulation current in the above electric motor and in a second electric motor, for the purpose of electrically adjusting the angles of the rear-view mirror around a vertical axis and a horizontal axis.
In a particular embodiment, the pivoting screws have a number of gear teeth
EMI4.1
corresponding to an angular rotation of 5 to 15, preferably 10. A spring recalls the last tooth of the pivoting screw against the worm mechanism, when the adjustment device is at the end of its travel.
A pulse counter determines the number of revolutions made by the electric motor to widen the optical field of the mirror when angularly moving from a first position suitable for walking the vehicle in a straight line to a second position deviated to the left or to the right, according to the direction of operation of the vehicle.
The pulse counter ensures that the electric motor which rotated the mirror from the first position to the second position performs the same number of revolutions after reversing the direction of travel.

than previously, in order to return the mirror to its initial position.
According to a development of the invention, the angular displacements of the mirror take place in a time interval of between 2 and 3 seconds after switching on by the direction light.
These particularities and other details of the invention will appear during the description of the attached drawings, which schematically and by way of limiting illustration, two embodiments of the device for widening the optical field of a mirror according to the invention.
In these drawings: - Figure 1 is a plan view, partially broken away, of a car rear view mirror provided with a device, according to the invention, for widening the optical field of the mirror; - Figure 2 is a vertical cross section of the mirror of Figure 1; - Figure 3 is a block diagram of the electric control circuit of the electric motor which actuates the mirror around a vertical axis; - Figure 4 is a plan view of the two motors mounted perpendicular to each other; - Figure 5 is a block diagram of the electrical circuit of a second embodiment of the invention.

EMI6.1
In these different figures, the same reference signs designate identical or analogous elements.
As illustrated in FIG. 1, the device 1 for widening the optical field of a mirror 11 for a vehicle rearview mirror comprises a housing 2 in which is housed an operating device comprising two electric motors 3, 4, two worm gear mechanisms 5, and two pivoting screws 6 in engagement with the endless mechanisms 5. It also comprises a mirror holder 7 pivotally connected to the housing, in the vicinity of its central part, by a ball joint 8 and guide means 9 in crosspiece. The first electric motor moves an adjustment element controlling the variation of the horizontal inclination of the mirror 11, which pivots in a left-right movement or vice versa, around the ball joint 8.
The second electric motor 4 moves an adjustment element 10 controlling the variation of the vertical tilt of the mirror 11, which moves in a sky-earth movement and vice versa. The amplitude of the left-right angular movements or vice versa to widen the optical field is between 5 and 20, preferably 100 (see Figure 2). The amplitude of the angular sky-earth movements and vice versa is generally less, it is between 1 and 100.
These left-right and right-left angular displacements are carried out at constant angular speed for two to three seconds.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The motors are mounted by means of vibration absorption elements, so as to avoid the resonance of the mirror housing during the operation of the electric motors.
FIG. 3 shows the electrical schematic diagram of the control circuit of one of the motors 3 for actuation around a vertical axis of the mirror 11 of one of the left and right rear view mirrors of the vehicle.
The circuit includes a battery 12 and a switch 13,14 actuated by relays RI, R2, controlled by the direction light corresponding to the side of the mirror.
The switches 13, 14 of the electric motor 3 are actuated by a first relay RI controlled during the actuation of the direction light and the reversal of the operation of the motor 3 is then, by a second relay R2, controlled by neutralization direction light.
In luxury cars, it may be useful to combine the device for widening the optical field according to the invention with a manual adjustment device with electric control similar to that described in document EP-A-0059073, in order to allow the driver to carry out an automatic adjustment of the angle of the mirror 11 around a vertical axis and around a horizontal axis, from the passenger compartment.
The adjustment device 1 comprises a housing 2 containing two electric motors 3,4 whose axes are arranged perpendicular to one another, two worm gear mechanisms 5 each driven by said electric motors 3,4 and two screws pivot 6 in engagement with the screw mechanisms

endless 5. (see figure 4)
The electric motors 3, 4 which actuate the mirror, are engaged, inverted or stopped at will by an automatic control device comprising two switches 13, 14, controlled by relays Ri and R2, actuated by the direction lights.
The electrical circuit also includes, mounted in parallel with the switches 13, 14 intended to automatically engage a first motor 3 capable of adjusting the angular position of the mirror around a vertical axis, switches 15, 16, 17 and 18, actuated manually using a directional control lever, of the joystick type of a computer, mounted in a manner known per se from the document EP-A-0059073 to pass a current at will, or reverse the direction of circulation current in the above-mentioned electric motor 3 and in a second electric motor 4, for the purpose of electrically adjusting the angles of the rear-view mirror 11 around a vertical axis and a horizontal axis.
FIG. 5 shows the basic electric diagram of the control circuit of the actuating motor around a vertical axis and a horizontal axis of the left and right rear view mirrors of the vehicle. The electrical circuit includes a battery 12 as a power source, a switch 22 for choosing the mirror whose mirror is to be moved, switches 15,16 for adjusting the angle of the mirror around a vertical axis, switches 15, 16 for adjusting the angle of the mirror 11 around a horizontal axis. One of the mirrors is angularly moved by a first motor 3 actuated by a
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
first RI relay controlled by switching on the direction lights.
The operation of the electric motor 3 is reversed by a second relay R2, the manual circuit being disconnected by a relay R3 controlled during the actuation of a direction light in order to avoid any inadvertent manipulation of the manual control lever.
Other electrical circuits can be designed to connect at least one of the mirror actuation motors to the power source, in particular the switches or the relays can be triggered by means of electronic "NAND" or "OR" gates. .
