<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
figures.
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Installation for continuous treatment of a galvanized steel strip and method for its use.
The present invention relates to an installation for continuous treatment of a galvanized steel strip, in particular by galvannealing. It also relates to a method of using this installation.
It is known that the heat treatment known under the name of galvannealing consists in subjecting a strip of galvanized steel successively to heating, maintaining at constant temperature and then rapid cooling. This treatment must ensure the diffusion of the iron from the strip through the zinc of the coating, until reaching a content of between 7% and 13% in this coating. These values define the optimal range of composition of the alloy, outside of which there is dusting at drawing when the iron content is too high, or the weldability of the product is not sufficient if the iron content is too weak.
Currently, the galvannealing operation is carried out in an installation where the strip describes at least two vertical passes, namely an ascending pass and a descending pass. Typically, this installation can also be used for the manufacture of a conventional galvanized strip.
In a conventional type installation, a heating and temperature-maintaining oven is placed above the galvanizing bath, immediately after the wringing device, that is to say the rollers or the air knives. This oven is generally shrinkable, because it is not used during the production of conventional galvanized strips. Above this oven is located a first cooling device, generally a first group of air supply fans. The above-mentioned oven and cooling device determine the height of the ascending pass, which currently cannot exceed about 50 meters due to the vibrations produced at the air knives.
A second cooling device, for example a second group of fans, is usually placed at the start of the following downward pass, the rest of this downward pass being unoccupied.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In such an installation, the coated strip leaves the zinc bath at a temperature of approximately 450. C to 480. C then, after wringing by the air knives, it undergoes the galvannealing operation by heating and keeping at approximately 550. C in the above-mentioned shrink oven. It is then cooled by a first group of fans, so as not to damage the coating on the deflection rollers, then cooling is continued at the start of the downdraft, to a suitable temperature for further treatment. of the coated strip.
As for conventional galvanized strips, they only undergo cooling from about 450'C-480'C, which is their temperature after spinning, to a temperature below 330. C at the top of the ascending pass, in order to avoid sticking of the strip on the deflection rollers.
The cooling then continues in the second cooling device, located at the start of the downflow, to the temperature required for further treatment of the galvanized strip.
In current practice, the galvannealing treatment is carried out manually by an operator, from a visual examination of the surface of the strip at the end of the treatment.
The current technique therefore has drawbacks of two kinds.
On the one hand, the conduct of the process is risky, because the optimal thermal cycle of galvannealing is poorly understood and the operator has no measurement, for example temperature or iron content of the surface. On the other hand, the installation is not used optimally, because a large portion of the pass, both ascending and descending, is in fact an unproductive course, while most of the treatment is carried out on the ascending pass, which greatly limits the durations achievable for the temperature maintenance phase.
The object of the present invention is to remedy this situation. To this end, it offers an installation for the treatment of a galvanized steel strip, which is better used than previously and which in particular makes it possible to control more precisely and more reliably the conditions for carrying out a treatment of galvannealing.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
According to the present invention, an installation for treating a galvanized steel strip, which comprises a tank containing a zinc bath, first parallel deflection rollers defining an upward vertical trajectory of the strip and second deflection rollers, parallel to said first deflection rollers, defining a vertical downward trajectory of the strip, as well as wringing means placed after the exit of said tank on said vertical upward trajectory of the strip, is characterized in that it comprises cooling means for the strip located along at least part of said ascending vertical trajectory as well as means for heating the strip and keeping said strip at a substantially constant temperature,
in that said heating and temperature keeping means are located successively along said downward vertical trajectory, and in that a tank containing a cooling liquid is located after said temperature keeping means.
Advantageously, said tank containing a cooling liquid is located at the lower end of said vertical trajectory descending from the strip.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, said means for cooling the strip are located in the upper part of said vertical upward trajectory of the strip, preferably in the upper half of this trajectory.
This configuration allows the galvanized strip to cool down to the temperature required to solidify the zinc layer and avoid sticking to the deflection rollers, just before carrying out the galvannealing treatment.
According to another embodiment of the invention, said means for cooling the strip are located in the lower part of said vertical upward trajectory, preferably in the lower half of this trajectory, in particular immediately after said wringing means.
With this configuration, the galvanized strip can be cooled in a very short time to the temperature required to solidify the zinc layer and avoid sticking on the deflection rollers. It is then advantageous to have stabilizing rollers after said cooling means
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of the galvanized strip. Such stabilizing rollers reduce the transverse vibrations of the strip in its upward vertical trajectory; they therefore simplify compliance with the thickness of the zinc layer, in particular when the wringing means consist of air knives.
Advantageously, said means for heating the strip comprise a direct fire oven or an induction oven. These heating means preferably extend as much as possible over the upper quarter of the descending vertical trajectory, and are capable of achieving an increase of 100 ° C.-250 ° C. in the temperature of the strip, with a speed greater than 10 °. C / s.
Said holding means generally consist of a thermally insulated tunnel, possibly fitted with heating means, for example with electricity or gas; they preferably occupy at least the lower three quarters of the downward vertical trajectory, and they are in all cases sufficiently long to ensure a duration of temperature maintenance greater than 10 s, and preferably greater than 15 s.
In a particular variant of the invention, the temperature maintaining oven comprises both heating means, in particular of the aforementioned type, as well as cooling means, for example a device for blowing air or gas onto the air-cooled strip or tubes, so that the temperature of this section of the oven can be quickly adjusted, both upwards and downwards, when switching from galvannealing treatment to cooling a strip conventional galvanized, or vice versa.
It is also advantageous for said temperature-maintaining means to communicate with the cooling tank, possibly with the interposition of an airlock to prevent vapors from said tank from entering the temperature-keeping means.
Said tank may also be provided with means for stirring the coolant, such as submerged nozzles, intended to prevent the formation of an insulating vapor layer on the surface of the coated strip.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
According to an additional characteristic of the invention, the entire installation can be housed inside an airtight enclosure which entirely surrounds, including the upper deflection rollers, the path of the strip from its exit from the zinc bath until it enters the coolant.
In addition, there may advantageously be provided means for introducing and circulating a gas in at least part of this enclosure, as well as means for extracting this gas with a view to its reuse.
In this variant, the coated strip leaves the zinc bath through a submerged box forming a siphon, which communicates with the above-mentioned sealed enclosure. The strip is wrung out using nitrogen knives or another neutral or reducing gas, then it travels its path in the enclosure under a neutral or reducing atmosphere. The cooling of the strip is also carried out by means of neutral or reducing gas jets. These protective gases are re-aspirated either before the cooling tank forming a siphon, or in this same tank, to be optionally reused.
Under these conditions, the strip treated, both by galvannealing and by the conventional route, does not undergo any contact with the air during the treatment and it has a shiny surface devoid of oxides.
We will now describe in more detail two alternative embodiments of an installation according to the invention, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which FIG. 1 shows a typical installation of the current state of the art; the
EMI5.1
Fig. 2 shows a first alternative embodiment of the invention; and Fig. 3 illustrates another alternative embodiment of the invention, with stabilizing rollers in the upward vertical trajectory of the strip.
These figures obviously constitute schematic representations, in which only the elements necessary for understanding the invention have been deliberately reproduced. For the sake of clarity, identical or analogous elements are designated by the same reference numerals in all
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
figures. The temperatures indicated in these figures are the values of the temperature of the strip at the considered locations of the installation, either in conventional galvanization or with galvannealing.
We first refer to FIG. 1, which shows an installation for processing a strip of galvanized steel, typical of the current technique.
The steel strip 1 coming from an annealing furnace 2, plunges into a bath of molten zinc 3 contained in a galvanizing tank 4. The strip 1 is deflected by a first deflection roller 5, and it leaves the bath of zinc 3 in vertical direction, progressing in the direction of the arrow. At the outlet of the zinc bath 3, it passes through a wringing device 6, generally constituted by air knives, which regulates the thickness of the layer of zinc on the steel strip 1.
Thus coated, the steel strip 1 successively describes an upward vertical path to a second deflection roller 7, a horizontal path to a third deflection roller 8, then a downward vertical path to a subsequent operation.
In the lower part of the upward vertical trajectory, that is to say shortly after the wringing device 6, is arranged a retractable oven 9. This oven 9 has a heating section 10 followed by a temperature maintenance section II . It makes it possible to operate the heating of the strip and its maintenance at the chosen temperature to cause the migration of iron in the zinc which characterizes the galvannealing treatment. The assembly of this furnace 9 is retractable in order to be able to produce galvanized steel strips in a conventional manner, without galvannealing treatment; in particular, this oven can make room for other machines, such as for example a minimum flowering installation, often used in conventional galvanizing.
The strip temperature is around 450 * C-480 * C after spinning; it is then brought to around 550 ° C by the galvannealing operation in the oven 9.
Above the furnace 9, that is to say in the upper part of the upward vertical path, the conventional installation comprises a device 12 for cooling the galvanized steel strip, which generally consists of a group supply air fans.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
This device 12 cools the galvanized strip, possibly after galvannealing, to a sufficiently low temperature to prevent it from sticking to the return rollers. This temperature is 330 * C maximum.
A second group of fans 13 is installed in the upper part of the downward vertical path; it completes the cooling of the galvanized steel strip to the temperature required for subsequent operations, such as skin-pass, surface treatment, rewinding.
In such an installation, the galvannealing operation is poorly controlled; moreover, the cooling of the coated strip is not very effective. This results in particular in difficulties concerning on the one hand the regulation of the treatment and on the other hand the control of the composition of the iron-zinc alloy, in particular on thick steel strips with a small thickness of zinc.
These problems are solved by the installation which is the subject of the invention, of which variant embodiments are illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3 and described below.
These two variants do not differ from the prior art as regards the actual galvanization of the strip, as well as the dewatering of the zinc layer.
The essential difference relates to the location of the galvannealing furnace which, according to the invention, is located on the downward vertical trajectory of the galvanized steel strip.
In the variant shown in FIG. 2, the cooling device 12 has been kept in the upper part of the upward vertical path. This device ensures, in all cases, the cooling of the galvanized strip from 450. C to 330 * C maximum.
The oven 9, composed of the heating section 10 and the temperature maintenance section 11, is installed along the downward vertical path. Under this oven 9 is arranged a tank 14 containing a cooling liquid, in which a lower deflection roller 15 is immersed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The heating furnace is constructed so as to have very low thermal inertia, in order to be able to adapt quickly to variations in the operation of the galvanizing line; it can therefore not be retractable, which reduces the cost. This is particularly the case if the heating furnace is an induction furnace with water-cooled inductors, which makes it possible to pass without transition from a "galvannealed" product to a conventional galvanized strip.
Preferably, the oven 9 communicates with the tank 14, with which it can form a siphon which prevents any entry of outside air into the oven 9.
In conventional galvanizing, the furnace 9 is not used and the galvanized strip cools slightly in the downward vertical path. In the event of galvannealing, the strip is reheated and kept at around 500. C in the oven 9. The temperature of 5000C is given for information only; in practice, this temperature is between 42S. C and 575. C.
In both cases, the galvanized strip is then rapidly cooled to ambient temperature by immersion in the coolant contained in the tank 14.
This advantageously comprises immersed nozzles 16, located in the region of the entry of the strip 1 into the coolant, to agitate this liquid and prevent the formation of an insulating vapor film on the surface of the strip 1 The processed tape is then sent to an unspecified later operation.
The variant illustrated in FIG. 3 is similar to that of FIG. 2 as regards on the one hand the actual galvanization and on the other hand the location of the galvannealing furnace 9.
In this variant, the cooling device 12 has been brought back to the lower part of the upward vertical trajectory, that is to say immediately after the wringing device 6. This device ensures the cooling of the galvanized strip of 450 ′ C to around 330. C.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
After the cooling device 12 are mounted stabilizing rollers 17, which reduce the transverse vibrations of the galvanized strip 1 and facilitate the adjustment of the thickness of the zinc layer by the wringing device 6.
In conventional installations, the length of the upward vertical path (5,7) cannot currently exceed forty to fifty meters, in particular due to transverse vibrations of the strip and the difficulty of adjusting the thickness of the coating. In addition, the necessary presence of a cooling device (12) before the first deflection roller (7) limits the space available for the galvannealing oven (9).
By moving the galvannealing oven (9) in the downward vertical trajectory (8, 15), the invention makes it possible to appreciably lengthen the duration of temperature maintenance, which facilitates the adjustment of temperatures and the conduct of treatment. In addition, it is thus possible to carry out the final cooling of the galvanized strip, with or without galvannealing, in a very short time which is favorable to the quality of the coating,
