COMPOSITION POUR SABLE DE FONDERIE ET PROCEDE UTILISANT
EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

FOUNDRY SAND COMPOSITION AND METHOD USING
EMI1.1
SUCH A COMPOSITION ----------------------------------------------- --------
The present invention relates to a composition for foundry sand, in particular for foundry molding sand.
Compositions or additives for foundry sand are known, these compositions or additives containing a hardening agent and / or a cohesion agent or binder and / or mineral black. In these known compositions, the curing agent is linseed oil or a resin (such as a furfurilic, phenolic, ethyl resin, etc.), while the cohesion agent is bentonite and sulphite lye, flour starches, wheat starches, corn starch, etc. When using such compositions or additives as well as mineral black in foundry sands, the water content of such sands must always be greater than 3% to obtain a sand suitable for molding and having good fluidity.
This high water content is due to the use of bentonite and mineral black intended to generate shiny carbon during molding, as well as to the use of products such as starches intended to give the sand certain properties such as cohesion, etc.
However, such a water content causes significant release of gas (vapor), such release being a cause of destruction, deformation, fault formation, etc. of the molded part.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The subject of the present invention is a composition for foundry sand making it possible to obtain a sand having good fluidity even if its water content is lower.
In one embodiment of a composition according to the invention, it makes it possible to reduce the use of mineral black since the composition contains materials advantageously replacing mineral black.
The parts cast in molds produced using a sand-composition mixture according to the invention have flawless shiny walls.
In addition, it has been noted that the use of a composition according to the invention in sands makes it possible to facilitate the cleaning of the molded parts.
Finally, it has been noted that the use of demineralized or deionized water in the composition according to the invention allows better recycling. This better recycling is possible thanks to the low supply of materials such as calcium or magnesium by the composition according to the invention to foundry sand.
It was also noted that it was possible to reduce the amount of composition according to the invention prepared by means of demineralized or deionized water necessary to obtain a sand having properties of fluidity, cohesion, etc. determined relative to the amount of composition according to the invention prepared from running water necessary to obtain a sand-having the same cohesion, fluidity properties, etc.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The composition according to the invention contains glycerin as hardening agent, said composition making it possible to give the mold in foundry sand sufficient hardness.
Advantageously, the composition contains one or more agents other than glycerin and is in the form of an aqueous solution or suspension, the weight ratio glycerin / other agent (s) being greater than 1, preferably 2.
Advantageously, the aqueous solution or suspension is prepared from demineralized and / or deionized water, the water / glycerin weight ratio being advantageously greater than 0.3, preferably between 0.5 and 2.
In one embodiment, the composition contains a cohesive or binding agent for the sand. Such an agent is, for example, a surfactant, an alcohol, preferably an ethylene glycol or a derivative thereof; glue, sulfite lye, etc. The glycerin / cohesive agent weight ratio is advantageously greater than 1, preferably 2.
In a preferred embodiment, the composition contains a substituent substance for mineral black, such substance being for example pitch, mineral oil, sugar or a mixture thereof.
In a particular embodiment, the composition contains from 30 to 45% by weight of glycerin, from 30 to 34% by weight of demineralized or deionized water, from 5 to 10% by weight of monoethylene glycol and from 5 to 30% of pitch, or 30 to 40% by weight of demineralized water
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
or deionized, from 45 to 55% by weight of glycerin and from 5 to 10% by weight of monoethylene glycol, or again from 20 to 30% by weight of demineralized or deionized water, from 55 to 65% by weight of glycerin and 5 to 20% by weight of oil.
The present invention also relates to a process for molding a foundry part in which a molten material is poured into a mold made from sand and clay. In this process, sand, clay and from 0.005 to 0.1%, preferably from 0.02 to 0.03% by weight of a composition according to the invention relative to the weight of sand are mixed, and of clay and a mold is formed using this mixture intended to be used for the casting of molten material.
In one embodiment, sand, bentonite, a composition according to the invention, optionally mineral black or a carbon black substitute and water are mixed.
Other particularities and details of compositions according to the invention will emerge from the following nonlimiting examples: Example 1
89 liters of demineralized water and 71 liters of glycerin (+ 89 kg) were mixed. Then 15 liters of monoethylene glycol (+ 17 kg) and 24 liters of sulphite lye (+ 36 kg) were added to this mixture. This mixing was carried out at room temperature.

These compositions have been used in the preparation of molds.
For the preparation of coring sand, 1000 kg of white sand (99% silica), 10 kg of clay (bentonite) and 200 g of a composition described above were mixed.
For the preparation of molding sand, 1000 parts by weight of sand, 60 to 80 parts of bentonite, 20 parts of demineralized water and 0.15 part by weight of a composition described above were mixed. The water content of the molding sand was less than 3%.
When using this sand for the preparation of molds, we could notice the properties of fluidity of the sand, resistance of the mold (rigidity) and heat stability of the mold.
In these preparation examples, in particular when using the compositions of Examples 6 and 7, the use of mineral black was not necessary since these compositions contained elements generating brilliant carbon on condition of adding bentonite.
After having cast the parts in a mold produced from molding sands containing respectively a composition according to Examples 6 and 7, it has been noticed that the molded parts have a skin without pitting and without expansion defects.
Finally, it was noted that the use of composition according to the invention makes it possible to reduce the consumption of clay (bentonite), makes it possible to reduce the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
ambient dust problem (thanks to the better cohesion of the sand).
It goes without saying that the composition according to the invention may optionally contain, in addition to glycerin, another hardening agent.
