"Tachographe"
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
EMI9.1

"Tachograph"
The present invention relates to a tachograph comprising a receiver member of a memory arranged to receive first data relating to a driver and second data relating to the use of a vehicle in which the tachograph is installed, which receiving member comprises a member writing device connected to a data management unit arranged to manage the sampling and processing of at least said second data as well as their transmission to the writing device.
Such tachographs are generally used in utility vehicles, such as trucks or buses.
The tachograph stores second data relating to the use of the vehicle, such as speed, driving time, etc., in memory, in order to be able to check whether the legislation in force has been observed.
The memory generally consists of a sheet of paper of a particular format on which the first data, such as for example the name of the driver, are recorded. The writing device is formed by a ballpoint pen or the lead of a pencil and is controlled by the management unit which transmits data to be entered.
A disadvantage of known tachographs is that they are very sensitive to forgery actions. Indeed, it is not very complicated to distort the data entered on the sheet of paper and therefore to circumvent the legislation in force.
The invention aims to achieve a tachograph in which means have been applied which make fraud of the recorded data significantly more difficult.
To this end, a tachograph according to the invention is characterized in that the receiving member comprises a reading member connected to said management unit comprising a microprocessor, which reading member is arranged to take data
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in said memory, which is part of a memory card and which is arranged to store coded data by electronic means, said first data being stored in a part of said memory which is inaccessible by the writing device, said unit management being arranged to transform each second data item taken into a coded word and to add an indication of time.
Due to the fact that the data is coded, more particularly in binary form, data fraud becomes significantly more complicated. The data, in the form of coded words, is stored inside the memory and therefore cannot be accessed without suitable equipment.
In addition, due to the fact that the first data relating to the driver are stored in a protected part of the memory made inaccessible to the writing device, these can only be modified with difficulty. By adding a time indication to the second data, this stored data makes it possible to reliably monitor the time use of the vehicle by the driver.
A first preferred form of a tachograph according to the invention is characterized in that the memory card comprises a memory of the EEPROM type. A memory of this type is quite suitable for being housed in a memory card and for writing and storing data therein reliably.
A second preferred form of a tachograph according to the invention is characterized in that the management unit comprises a counting member having an input for receiving a clock signal and arranged to form, after counting a predetermined number d clock pulses, a control signal, said management unit being arranged to carry out said sampling and coding of said second data under control of said control signal.
This allows a second sampling and regular storage over time.
Preferably, a tachograph according to the invention comprises an auxiliary electrical voltage source and means for detecting a disconnection of the electrical voltage source from the vehicle in which the tachograph is mounted and connecting said auxiliary source upon detection of a disconnection as well as
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
means for saving the data stored in the memory after detection of a disconnection. This allows the tachograph to be placed on "stand by" when the current from the main voltage source is no longer supplied.
Preferably, the tachograph management unit will comprise means arranged to form coded words using a CRC code. A CRC is an easy way to check the accuracy of the data.
The invention will now be described in more detail using the drawing which shows an embodiment of a tachograph according to the invention. It goes without saying that the invention is not limited to this example. In the drawing: Figure 1 shows a schematic view of the main elements of a tachograph according to the invention; Figure 2 schematically illustrates a speed and distance traveled detector forming part of the tachograph according to the invention; Figure 3 illustrates a LED power circuit forming part of the speed and distance traveled detector; Figure 4 illustrates an example of a circuit for the current supply of the memory present in the memory card.
Figure 1 schematically shows the main elements of an exemplary embodiment of a tachograph according to the invention. The tachograph comprises a data management unit 1, for example formed by a microprocessor, which is connected to a speed and distance traveled detector 2. A memory receiving member 3 is also connected to the management unit 1. Preferably, this member 3 is arranged to read and write data coded in binary forms in a memory card 4. This memory card preferably has the classic format of bank or credit cards and includes an EEPROM type memory. It is obvious that this memory card can have other formats and other types of memory, such as for example an optical or magnetic memory.
Another memory 5, for example a ROM or
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
EPROM, and a clock 6 are also connected to the data management unit. In the memory 5 are stored management programs which are executed using the microprocessor 1 and which allow the operation of the tachograph. This memory 5 also includes parameters and identifiers which are specific to the vehicle in which the tachograph is installed. The clock 6 delivers clock pulses necessary, inter alia for the operation of the management unit 1. The tachograph also comprises a display unit 7 connected to the microprocessor and a keyboard 8 allowing the control of the tachograph.
Optionally, the tachograph also includes a printer 9 making it possible to print data taken from the memory card 4.
The memory of the memory card 4 essentially comprises two data fields, on the one hand, a field for first data relating to the conductors and, on the other hand, a second field for storing second data relating to the use of the vehicle. For example, there are 128 Bytes in memory, 22 Bytes for the first field and 106 Bytes for the second field. The first field is a protected field, that is to say that it is inaccessible to the writing device so as not to destroy or manipulate these data relating to the driver which are for example his name, his date of birth , driver's license number, etc.
The second data relating to the driver is coded, for example using a CRC (Cyclic Redundance Check) in order to allow the verification of this data. The first field is even protected so as not to be erased during an erase memory operation.
Only the reading of this first field is allowed.
In order to be able to measure the speed of the vehicle and thus determine the distance traveled, the tachograph includes a speed and distance traveled detector, shown diagrammatically in FIG. 2. This detector comprises an LED 10 whose emitted light is sent on a rotating disc It has a window 12. On the other side of the disc 11, there is a first 13, respectively a second 14, opto-coupler, one output of which is connected to a first 15, respectively a second 16, reversing gate, whose
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the output is connected to a first, respectively second, input of a flip-flop 17 formed of two mutually interconnected logic gates 18,19. An output signal K is delivered on a line 33 connected to a data input of the microprocessor 1.
The disc 11 is connected to an output of the gearbox (not shown in the figure) and therefore rotates at the same speed as the transmission axis and therefore the wheels of the vehicle.
The speed at which the vehicle travels can therefore be determined by the speed of rotation of the disc. The window 12 preferably has an opening angle 0 (of 1350. The use of this window allows the first 13 and the second 14 opto-coupler to be illuminated alternately, which are arranged approximately 180 from one of the 'other and at a distance corresponding to that of the diameter of the disc.
Preferably, the LED 10 is supplied by a pulsed current or is a flashing LED, which allows less energy consumption. The light emitted by the LED 10 alternately illuminates the optocouplers 13 and 14 due to the rotation of the disc 11. The frequency at which the light will be incident on the optocouplers is determined by the speed of rotation of the disc and therefore by vehicle speed. When the light is incident on the opto-coupler 13, it is transformed into current which will be supplied by the inverter 15 at the input of the logic gate 18 of the latch 17. The gate 18 will thus be positioned, as well as flip-flop 17, which will cause a rising edge of the wave transmitted on line 33.
When, on the other hand, the light is incident on the optocoupler 14, the door 19 will be positioned and the rocker reset to zero, which causes a falling edge on the K wave transmitted on the line 33. The time between two rising sides of the wave on line 33 therefore corresponds to the time of a complete rotation of the disc and, consequently, of the wheels of the vehicle. It is thus possible to determine the vehicle speed and the distance traveled from the K wave on line 33, for example by counting the clock pulses supplied by the clock 6 between two rising edges of the emitted wave. on line 33.
The use of two optocouplers allows detection
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
more reliable and the elimination of any disturbances. In fact, because the light incident on the second opto-coupler 14 resets the rocker to zero, a periodic signal is obtained on line 33 which is more reliable, and whose frequency is proportional to the speed of the vehicle.
The supply of electric current to the LED 10 is controlled by the electronic circuit, an exemplary embodiment of which is shown in FIG. 3. The anode of the LED 10 is connected to a resistor 30 which limits the current flowing in the diode. This resistor 30 is connected to the collector of a transistor 28, the base of which is connected via a resistor 29 and a buffer 26 to a counter 25. A resistor 27 is connected between the base and the emitter of the transistor 28 , which is itself connected to the collector of another transistor 20. The emitter of this transistor 20 is connected to a voltage source, for example the vehicle battery or a voltage source derived from this battery. When memory 4 is an EEPROM type memory, this data automatically remains in this memory.
A resistor 21 is connected between the emitter and the base of the transistor 20, which base is connected via a resistor 22 to a line 31, itself connected to the microprocessor. A line 24, respectively 23, brings the clock signal, respectively the reset signal, supplied by the microprocessor, to the counter 25.
Under normal operating conditions, that is to say when the vehicle battery is connected, the transistor 20 is conductive and the current delivered by the battery or by a voltage source derived from this battery is supplied via the transistor 20 to the transistor 28 , which is itself conductive, and so to LED 10.
When, on the other hand, the battery is disconnected or discharged, a detector circuit, known per se, detects it and the microprocessor then emits an interrupt signal on line 31 and thus at the base of transistor 20, which will have the effect to disconnect the transistor 20, and thus the link between the LED 10 and the battery. The current supply of the LED 10 is then ensured by the buffer 26, which forms an auxiliary electric voltage source and which comprises for example by a Ni-Cd battery or a capacitor, and which goes
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
deliver a voltage, preferably a pulsed voltage in order to save the energy stored in the buffer 26, to the LED 10. Thus, it can be checked whether the vehicle has been moved even when the battery is disconnected.
The buffer is itself monitored by the counter 25 which counts the clock pulses supplied to it by the line 24. After a predetermined time, for example 24 hours, the counter emits a signal which will disconnect the buffer 26 and therefore completely stop the current supply to LED 10. In fact, the buffer capacity being limited, it is necessary to stop this auxiliary supply of LED 10 in good time. When the battery is reconnected before the expiration of said predetermined time, the microprocessor resets counter 25 to zero by means of a reset signal sent on line 23 and reconnects transistor 20 using a signal sent on line 31.
When the vehicle battery is disconnected, the display unit 7 is also switched off in order to save energy.
This last operation is managed by the microprocessor after detecting a disconnection of the battery. A too long interruption of the current supplied by the battery will result in the microprocessor itself being disconnected. This is, for example, done using a time counter, which starts after detection of a disconnection of the battery and which, after counting a predetermined interruption time, for example a little more than 24 hours , will send a reset signal which it will supply to the microprocessor.
When the microprocessor is disconnected, the tachograph will nevertheless take care to save the data stored in memory 4, in particular that of the 24 hours which followed the interruption of current supplied by the battery.
The tachograph according to the invention is therefore equipped to operate for a certain time, for example 24 hours, after the vehicle battery has been disconnected. Thus, during this period of time, the microprocessor 1 remains active as well as the speed and distance detector 2. The storage 4 of the data therefore continues during this period, which makes it possible to verify the use of the vehicle, even when the battery is disconnected.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
However, during this same period, the microprocessor does not accept instructions from the keyboard 8 or from the printer 9 and this in order not to waste energy from the auxiliary source.
The vehicle speed and the distance traveled, as taken and determined using the detector 2, are stored in the second field of the memory 4. This memory 4 preferably has a capacity of 32KBytes, which makes it possible to store two weeks of vehicle usage data. These data are stored in such a way that their access to modify or violate them is made very difficult. In fact, the vehicle user no longer has access to this data when the vehicle is in working order. In addition, the time is memorized in real time without the user being able to modify it. At most, the user can apply a correction of one minute to the real time recorded.
Access to memory 4, both for reading and for writing, is managed by the microprocessor which also manages the current supply of the memory card. Figure 4 shows the EEPROM memory of the memory card, a current input of which is connected to the collector of a transistor 32, the emitter of which is connected to a voltage source and the base to a microprocessor control output. Current is therefore supplied to the EEPROM memory when the microprocessor applies a signal to the base of transistor 32, which then makes the transistor conductive. When the EEPROM memory is supplied with current, the transfer of information can take place.
By having the power supply to the EEPROM controlled by the microprocessor, any access to the memory is made impossible by an organ external to the tachograph.
The data is stored in the form of coded words in the EEPROM memory, preferably a CRC is used, but other codes are also possible. The second field is, for example, divided as follows: assuming that 106 Bytes are available: Bytes: 0-89: Here one bit per time interval, for example a two-minute interval, is introduced in order to keep track of use

of the vehicle. For example, a value "1", respectively "0", indicates that the vehicle is or is not used during the interval considered.
90-91: indicates data regarding the insertion and removal of the memory card.
92-93: indicates the address where the last bit was entered, which indicates the use of the vehicle.
94 - 95: additional information, such as, for example, a penalty code.
96-97: verification code for stored data, for example CRC.
Thus, after expiration of each time interval where the memory card is in unit 3, and which is determined using a counting device which produces a control signal when the time interval has elapsed, the microprocessor makes write a bit (1 or 0) in the memory thus indicating if the vehicle is used or not. The time when the card is inserted or removed is also remembered. We can thus have a complete overview of the use of the vehicle during an elapsed period of time.
Preferably, the data to be stored in the memory card is temporarily stored in a memory of the microprocessor or in another working memory and the recording of this data in the memory card is done only at predetermined times. This facilitates the task of the microprocessor, which does not therefore have to transfer data to the memory card each time and above all must not activate the memory of this card each time. Thus the data transfer is done, for example, when the driver or the person responsible for verifying the content of the card wants to take the card out of the member 3.
To this end, the member 3 is provided with a locking element which locks the card and, when the card is removed, the unlocking of the locking element will cause the transfer of data and their storage in the memory of the map 4.
