<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
De verwijzingscijfers betreffen de hieraan toegevoegde tekeningen waarin : figuur 1 een bovenaanzicht is van een gedeelte van een auto waarop de werkwijze volgens de uitvinding toegepast werd ; figuur 2 een doorsnede voorstelt volgens de lijn II-II uit figuur 1, op merkelijk grotere schaal getekend ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
figuur 3 een doorsnede voorstelt volgens de lijn 111-111 uit figuur 1, op dezelfde schaal als figuur 2 getekend ; figuur 4 een doorsnede voorstelt analoog aan deze uit figuur 3 maar met betrekking op een andere uitvoeringsvorm van de werkwijze volgens de uitvinding ; figuur 5 een doorsnede voorstelt analoog aan deze uit de figuren 3 en 4 maar met betrekking op een nog andere uitvoeringsvorm van de werkwijze volgens de uitvinding en ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

A method for reducing the frictional resistance of a moving object and object with thus
EMI1.1
reduced frictional resistance. The invention relates to a method for reducing the frictional resistance of a moving object, more particularly in its displacement in a fluid.
A fluid moving object is inhibited by the resistance it experiences therein so that in many cases it is useful to minimize this resistance.
This is the case, inter alia, with means of transport such as vehicles, aircraft and boats, in which the fuel consumption increases with increasing air resistance and resistance in the liquid, respectively.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Hence it is already known to streamline these means of transport. With the help of a wind tunnel, for example, the most ideal shape, especially from the front of the means of transport, is selected to provide as little air resistance as possible. The protruding parts on the vehicle are avoided as much as possible.
However, a relatively high frictional resistance still remains, which is caused by the friction of the air or water on the surface of the object when it moves through the air or water at great speed.
With means of transport, especially vehicles, the surface exposed to the air is very smooth, for example painted sheet or glass.
The object of the invention is to provide a method in which the frictional resistance of an object moving in a fluid, also of a streamlined object, can still be reduced in a simple and relatively inexpensive manner.
For this purpose, at least a portion of the surface over which, under normal forward movement of the object, a fluid flows over this surface
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
scattered floors whose depth is less than 2
EMI3.1
mm. Upon movement of the object, the fluid, which thus performs a relative movement relative to the object, will flow substantially over the portions between the depressions so that the contact area of the moving fluid and the surface of the moving object is smaller, and consequently the friction of the fluid over the surface is less. Obviously, the depressions should not be too deep, as they could then form a resistance to the fluid or cause unwanted turbulences.
In an effective embodiment of the invention, the depressions, either individually or in groups, extend in directions extending transversely of the flow direction of the fluid across the surface upon moving object.
The depressions may be grooves or the surface may be corrugated, the depressions then being formed between the waves.
The floors can be microscopic and, for example, smaller than 100 micrometers.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
It is possible to apply the recesses in the surface itself or to apply it to the surface by attaching to it a film provided with the necessary recesses.
The invention also relates to an object whose frictional resistance to a fluid according to any of the previous embodiments has been reduced.
Other particularities and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of a method for reducing the frictional resistance of a fluid moving object and of an object having thus reduced frictional resistance, according to the invention. This description is given by way of example only and does not limit the invention.
The reference numerals relate to the accompanying drawings in which: figure 1 is a top view of a part of a car to which the method according to the invention was applied; figure 2 represents a section according to the line II-II of figure 1, drawn on a noticeably larger scale;
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
figure 3 represents a section according to the line 111-111 of figure 1, drawn on the same scale as figure 2; figure 4 represents a cross-section analogous to that of figure 3, but with reference to another embodiment of the method according to the invention; figure 5 represents a cross-section analogous to that of figures 3 and 4, but with regard to yet another embodiment of the method according to the invention and;
figure 6 represents a cross-section analogous to that in figure 2, but with reference to another embodiment of the method according to the invention.
In the different figures, like reference numerals refer to like elements.
In order to reduce the air resistance of the car, the front part of which is shown in figure 1, the major part of the surfaces 1 of this car over which the air flows while driving, is provided with small floors 2.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The intended surfaces are the surfaces which are oriented parallel to or rearwardly at an angle to the forward normal driving direction of the car, which direction is indicated by arrow 3 in Figure 1.
The surfaces 1 provided with recesses are in particular the lacquered outer sides of the body 4, especially at the front of the car.
The depressions 2 are applied to these surfaces by adhering to the surfaces a plastic film 5 in which depressions 2 are arranged. These recesses 2 can be applied during the manufacture of the film itself, for example by adjusting the. extrusion openings in extruded film or, in the case of a thermo-deformable film, by a finishing operation in which depressions are pressed with a heated roller.
The depth of the depressions 2 should be less than 2 mm and preferably even less than 100 micrometers. However, the depressions can be very small, for example, going up to 0.1 micrometers. The ideal depth depends on the shape of the floors 2 and on their mutual distance. In many cases, a suitable depth is between 10 and SO micrometers.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
In the embodiment according to Figures 1 to 4, the recesses 2 are formed by grooves whose longitudinal direction is transverse to the normal forward direction of travel indicated by the arrow 3 and thus also transversely to the air flow which flows over the surface 1 when driving the car. flows.
In the embodiment according to Figures 1 to 3, the groove-shaped recesses 2 have a triangular cross-section, thus tooth-shaped ribs 6 are formed between adjacent recesses 2.
When driving the car, the air flows mainly over the tops of these ribs 6, so that the contact surface of this flowing air and the surface 1 is minimal.
The size of the floors 2 is chosen such that preferably little or no turbulence of air takes place in the floors 2. Air in the floors 2 can be sucked in by the flow of air over the tops of the ribs 6, so that an underpressure is created in the floors.
The embodiment of the surface to which Figure 4 relates differs from the one described above
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
embodiment in that this surface is saw-tooth-shaped at the top and the ribs 6 have a saw-tooth-shaped cross-section. The side with the smallest slope of these ribs 6 is at the front, this is in the side located at the front in the direction of travel indicated by arrow 3. Due to this slightly sloping side, the air flow is better guided to the tops of the ribs 6.
In the embodiment to which Figure 5 relates, the surface 1 or more specifically, the film 5 applied thereon, is slightly corrugated on the outside. The floors 2 are thus formed by the valleys between two tops of the waves.
The recesses 2 need not necessarily be elongated grooves. In another embodiment of the method, these recesses may be dimples which are either randomly distributed on the surface or still extend in rows oriented transversely to the normal forward direction of movement of the car indicated by arrow 3.
In yet another embodiment, the surface is not only provided with groove-shaped indentations 2 extending transversely to the normal direction of movement of the car indicated by arrow 3, but also provided with
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
groove-shaped indentations 2 directed parallel to the latter direction. Figure 6 relates to this embodiment in which the cross-section along the line 11-11 of Figure 1 is the same as the cross-section shown in Figure 3. Basically, the surface 1 is provided with substantially pyramid-shaped protrusions.
In all the embodiments described above, the contact surface of the air with the moving car can be reduced by providing indentations 2 on the surfaces 1 over which the air flows. This can be done in a very simple way by applying the film 5.
In another embodiment, instead of applying a film, the depressions 2 can be applied directly in the body itself. For example, the paint layer on the body can be applied in such a way that it forms protrusions between which the recesses 2 are created. This way is especially suitable for obtaining the embodiment to which the figure 6 relates, wherein the protrusions between the floors 2 are not necessarily pyramidal. These protrusions can form, for example, flattened or non-flattened cones. The protrusions and consequently
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
the recesses between them can also be formed, for example, by adding solid particles to the lacquer layer which form the protrusions.
In many cases the floors 2 are so small that they are hardly visible to the naked eye. The appearance of the car changes little or not, but because the air resistance is much smaller, the fuel consumption will also be smaller.
The invention is by no means limited to the above-described embodiments, and many changes can be made to the described embodiments within the scope of the patent application.
In particular, the invention is not necessarily limited to cars; other vehicles or other moving objects, such as airplanes, boats, etc. where it is important to keep the frictional resistance as small as possible, can also be treated in an analogous way.
For example, the invention is also very suitable for use with surfboards. Existing surfboards can be equipped with it by applying a film 5 as mentioned above. The film according to figure 4
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
even offers the advantage that the driving effect is increased in the case of a co-operating wave.
As already mentioned, the floors need not necessarily be caused by the application of a film.
