SERINGUE A JETER
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
'L'ouverture centrale 25 qui permet la communication des deux chambres 23, 24 entre elles a
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

DISPOSABLE SYRINGE
The present invention relates to a plastic disposable syringe comprising a cylinder, a piston which can slide in this cylinder, a piston actuating rod and a connecting member between the rod and the piston.
Syringes of the type indicated above are known which are delivered in sterile packages. In principle, these syringes are intended to be used only once to inject or withdraw liquids in natural tissues or cavities of the human or animal body. In practice, we. notes that such syringes are often used repeatedly, which can be dangerous (risk of contamination and accidents).
The present invention relates to a syringe which is arranged so that it can be used only once to withdraw a liquid and to inject it into the body of a patient.
The syringe according to the invention, which is of the type described in the first paragraph of this specification, is essentially characterized in that the plunger pr. esente a cavity allowing, when pressure is applied to the piston by the rod, a relative movement of the connecting member. relative to the piston until in a position where a traction exerted on the rod disengages, at least partially, the piston from the rod.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In a first embodiment of a syringe according to the invention, the aforementioned cavity consists of a first chamber surmounting a second chamber, these chambers communicating with one another by a central opening capable of delivering passage to a tip of the organ when a pressure is exerted by the rod on the piston, the endpiece remaining trapped in the second chamber when traction is applied to the rod.
According to a feature of this embodiment, the connecting member consists of a bar having an end integral with. the piston rod and an extremist provided with a head housed in a hollow formed in the base of the deformable tip in the form of a cone, the top of which is directed in the direction of displacement of the piston when pressure is exerted on it ci, the aforesaid head being dislodged from the hollow formed in the end piece, when the latter has been brought into the second chamber and when a traction is exerted-

on the piston rod.
In another embodiment, the connecting member consists of a bar having an extremist fixed to a wall of the second chamber and one end fixed to a deformable end piece, substantially in the shape of a cone or half-sphere, the piston both consisting of two coaxial parts which can be separated from each other, the first part of the piston having the first chamber in which is permanently housed a plate which is integral with the piston rod and which is supported by its periphery on a wall having a hole providing passage through this rod, when traction is exerted on this rod, while
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
that the second part of the piston has the second chamber in which is housed the aforementioned tip when,
under the effect of a pressure exerted on the rod, this endpiece is pushed back into the second chamber through a communication opening between the two chambers, this opening being coaxial with the aforementioned hole and being formed in a wall of the first part of the piston, this first part moving away from the second part of the piston when traction is exerted on the piston rod while the end piece is housed in the second chamber.
In a third embodiment of a syringe according to the invention, the piston has a single cavity in which an endpiece integral with a bar of the piston rod is movable between a position in which this endpiece is supported on a wall of the cavity delivering passage to the bar and a position in which this endpiece is deflected towards a side wall of the cavity so that the bar ruptures.
Other particularities and details of the syringe according to the invention will emerge from the following detailed description in which reference is made to the attached drawings.
In these drawings: - Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of a syringe of known type; - Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of a first embodiment of a syringe according to the invention, during the aspiration of a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
liquid - Figures 3 to 5 are views similar to that of Figure 2, except that they represent the syringe during and after injection; Figures 6 to 8 are cross-sectional views of a second embodiment of a syringe according to the invention, and Figures 9 and 10 are cross-sectional views of a third embodiment of a syringe according to the invention.
In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.
Figure 1 shows in cross section a disposable syringe 1 of known type. This syringe 1 comprises a pump body or cylinder 2 on the lower part 3 of which there is a small tube 4, used to aspirate and eject a liquid, this tube 4 of the syringe 1 communicating with an internal volume 5 of the syringe and with the exterior 6 thereof. This syringe 1 also comprises a piston 7 which can slide in the cylinder 2, a rod 8. for actuating the piston 7 and a connecting member 9 between the rod 8 and the piston 7. The rod 8 is provided with radial wings 10 intended to guide its movement in cylinder 2.
This rod 8 is also provided, at one (11) of its ends 11, 12, with a pusher 13 intended to facilitate the injection operations. The connecting member 9 is carried by a bar 14 ,. located at the end 12 of the rod 8. The member 9 has the shape of a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
cone, the apex 15 of which is directed towards the lower surface 3 of the cylinder 2. This cone 9 is housed in a cavity 16 of the piston, this cavity having a shape which matches that of the cone 9. The piston 7 has radial peripheral projections 17 , intended to seal between the piston 7 and the cylinder 2.
The cylinder 2 has, at its upper edge 18, a flange 19 intended for gripping the cylinder 2 by two fingers, during an injection.
On the tubing 4 can adapt a pavilion 20 of a hollow needle 21. The needle 21 can also be fixed permanently on the tubing 4.
The syringe of the known type, shown in Figure 1, can optionally be used repeatedly.
Figures 2 to 10 show syringes according to the invention. These syringes 1 are similar to that shown in FIG. 1, except that they can only be used once. In these figures, the wings 10 of the rod 8 of the piston 7 have not been shown.
Figures 2 cA 5 show a first embodiment of a syringe l according to the invention.
The piston 7 of this syringe 1 has a cavity 22 allowing, when a pressure (arrow P) is applied to the piston 7 by the rod 8, a relative movement (arrow M) of the connecting member relative to the piston 7 into a position (Figures 4 and 5) where a pull (arrow T) exerted on
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the rod 8 at least partially separates the piston 7 from the rod 8.
This cavity 22 consists of a first chamber 23 surmounting a second chamber 24, these coaxial chambers communicating with each other by a central opening 25. This opening 25 is capable of delivering passage to a deformable endpiece 26 of the connecting member, when 'A pressure (arrow P) is exerted by the rod 8 on the piston 7 (see Figure 3). This nozzle 26 then remains housed in the second chamber 24, when a traction (arrow T) is exerted on the rod 8 (see Figures 4 and 5).
The connecting member consists of a bar 27, one end 28 of which is integral with the rod 8 of the piston 7 and the other end 29 of which is provided with a head 30. This head 30 is intended to be housed in a hollow 31 leads into the base 32 of the deformable end piece 26. This end piece 26 advantageously has a substantially conical or frustoconical shape or the shape of a part of a sphere but preferably has an apex 33 directed in the direction of movement piston 7, when pressure (arrow P) is exerted on it.
The head 30 has a shape which matches the shape of the hollow 31 of the end piece 26 when the piston 7 is subjected - a traction and when the end piece. 26 is located in the first chamber 23 ... This head 30 is dislodged from the hollow 31 of the endpiece 26 when the latter has been brought into the second chamber 24 and when a traction (flue T) is exerted on the piston rod 8 7.
'' The central opening 25 which allows the communication of the two chambers 23, 24 between them has
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
a cross section in the form of a cone-shaped trunk, so as to facilitate the passage of the nozzle 26 from the first chamber 23 to the second chamber 24 when pressure is exerted on the rod 8 (flache P).
The first chamber 23 has a wall 34 in which is formed a circular hole 35 providing passage to the bar 27 of the rod 8. The endpiece 26 has a peripheral stop 36 which bears on the wall 34 of the first chamber when a traction is exerted on the rod 8 and when the endpiece 26 is in said first chamber 23 (Figure 2).
This tip 26 is also provided with projections 37 on its base 32, but is preferably provided with a single circular projection 37. This projection 37 has a peripheral circular edge 38 which conforms to the shape of the edge of the hole 35 in the wall. 34 of the first chamber, when traction is exerted on the rod 8 of the piston 7 and when the endpiece 26 is housed in the first chamber 23 (see FIG. 2). This projection 37 allows, when traction is exerted on the piston 7, the end piece 26 to deform slightly in the direction of the arrows X, so that this end piece 26 is firmly applied to the head 30 of the bar 27 ( see figure 2).
The projection 37 has a substantially conical surface 39 extending between its peripheral edge 38 and the central recess 31 of the endpiece 26.
The hole 35 of the wall 34 has a diameter greater than the smallest diameter of the frustoconical opening of communication 25 between the two chambers 23, 24. Thus, when the end piece 26 is brought into the second chamber 24 and when traction is exerted on
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
the rod 8, the endpiece 26 bears by its projection 37 on the separation surface 40 in which the communication opening 25 is pierced (see FIG. 4). When one continues to exert a traction, the surface 39 of the end piece 26 comes to bear on the partition wall.
EMI8.1
tion 40. Thus, this endpiece 26 undergoes deformation in the direction of the arrows Y, so as to widen the central hollow 31 and to dislodge from the endpiece 26 the head 30 of the bar 27 (see FIG. 5).
When the piston 7 and the endpiece 26 occupy the positions shown in FIG. 5, it is no longer possible to move this piston, since any traction exerted on the rod 8 separates the rod 8 from said piston 7.
Figures 6 to 8 show in cross section a second embodiment of a syringe according to the invention.
In this second embodiment, the piston 7 consists of two coaxial parts 41, 42 which can be separated from one another. The first part 41 has a first chamber 23 in which is permanently housed a plate 43 which is integral with the rod 8 of the piston 7.
This first chamber 23 has two walls 44, 45 which are substantially parallel to one another. A circular hole 35 is formed in the wall 44, so as to allow the passage of at least one part 46 of the rod 8, while a communication opening 25 between the two chambers is drilled in the wall 45. This opening 25 is advantageously coaxial with the hole 35 and has a substantially frustoconical shape. The cross section of this opening 25 is all the more
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
small as we get closer to the first room 23.
The connecting member which connects the two parts 41, 42 of the piston 7 consists of a bar 27, one end 28 of which is fixed to a wall 47 of the second chamber 24 and the other end 29 of which carries a deformable endpiece 26 , this tip may have a conical or hemispherical shape. Instead of using a bar 27, it is possible to use a deformable membrane carrying said end piece 26.
The operating mode of such a syringe is as follows:
When the nozzle 26 is housed in the first chamber 23, a traction (floche A) exerted on the rod 8 causes the displacement of the piston 7 in. the cylinder 2. This makes it possible to suck a liquid through the communication pipe 4 and to fill the interior volume 5 of the cylinder 2 (see FIG. 6).
When it is desired to inject the liquid contained in the volume'5, a pressure (arrow P) is applied to the rod 8. This pressure causes, on the one hand, a relative displacement of the plate 43 relative to the piston 7 and, on the other hand, the displacement of the two parts 41, 42 of this piston 7 towards the lower surface 3 of the cylinder 2 (see FIG. 7).
During said relative movement of the plate 43, this plate 43 is brought to bear on the wall 45 of the first chamber 23, so as to move the end piece 26 and bring it into the second chamber 24. In one embodiment favorite. the plate 43 carries, on the side opposite to the rod 8, a
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
protuberance 48 of substantially frustoconical shape. This protuberance 48 ensures complete passage of the nozzle 26 through the opening 25, when the plate 43 is adjacent to the wall 45 of the first chamber 23. This is due to the fact that this protuberance 48 can be introduced in the central communication opening 25 (see FIG. 7).
When, after injection (FIG. 7), a traction (arrow T) is applied to the rod 8 of the piston 7, the plate 43 is first brought against the wall 44 of the first chamber 23 and then the parts 41, 42 of the piston separate from each other (see Figure 8), so as to prevent any new use of the syringe.
Figures 9 and 10 show a third embodiment. of a syringe according to the invention.
In this third embodiment, the piston 7 has a single cavity 22 in which an endpiece 26 secured to a bar 27 of the rod 8 of the piston 7 is movable.
Thus, this endpiece 26 can be brought: - in a position in which a base 32 of the latter bears on a wall 44 of the cavity
22, which has a hole 35, giving way to the aforementioned bar 27, when a pull (arrow T) is exerted on the rod 8 (FIG. 9), and - in a position in which, when a pressure P East. exerted on the rod 8, the endpiece 26 is deflected towards a side wall 49 of the chamber 22,

so that the bar 27 breaks, thus preventing any subsequent aspiration (FIG. 10) of liquid in the volume 5 of the syringe.
The cavity 22 has, opposite the wall 44 delivering passage to the bar 27, a bottom wall 50 whose surface directed towards the interior of the cavity forms a ramp for deflection of the aforementioned nozzle 26.
According to a specific feature, the bar 27 has a weakened part 51, so that this bar 27 breaks when the endpiece 26 is deflected towards the wall 49.
In a possible embodiment similar to that of FIGS. 9 and 10, the endpiece 26 undergoes deformation or pivoting when pressure is applied to the rod 8, so that, when traction is then applied to this rod, the endpiece 26 is capable of passing through the hole 35 in the wall 44, so that the rod 8 and its endpiece 26 both separate from the piston 7.
The cylinder 2, the rod 8 of the piston 7, the

bar 43, the end piece 26, the protuberance 48 can be made of plastic, for example PVC (polyvinyl chloride), and the piston 7 is made of a deformable material, such as rubber.
The bar 27 and the endpiece 26 can, in certain embodiments, be made of a highly deformable material, for example of rubber.
