<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
EXEMPLE I

"Molding compositions of crosslinkable polyurethanes"
The present invention relates to molding compositions of crosslinkable polyurethanes.
In the past, there have been widely used in the manufacture of shaped articles, both cellular and non-cellular, essentially linear polyurethane resins resulting from the stepwise growth reaction of a polyisocyanate and a diol. The basic growth polymerization reaction, which is found at the bottom, is particularly suitable for the manufacture of these articles by the technique of injection molding and reaction (RIM). This latter operation has therefore become the general molding procedure of choice in the industry concerned, because of the inherent substantial economic advantages associated with it.
However, linear polyurethane resins, although they are particularly suitable for RIM treatment, have found only fairly limited final industrial applications, due to the lack of structural strength properties. The ever-expanding use of structural plastic members in the construction of automobiles and similar assemblies therefore tends to make efforts to enhance the mechanical strength properties of conventional polyurethane resins.
One way in this regard for obtaining better properties is to increase the density of the crosslinking of the resulting polymer structure.
This can be achieved in the most direct economic way through employment as part of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
conventional diol content of a polyol having a hydroxyl functionality exceeding two. Recent representative patents according to this route for enhancing the mechanical strength properties of a polyurethane resin of typical composition are American patents 4 260.718, 4 376 834 and 4 385 133. This prior art on the subject shows the degree of improvement that can be expected from this approach. A notable disadvantage of this prior art is only tacitly noted. It is pointed out that a large extent post-hardening cycle is necessary to obtain the improvement of the mechanical strength properties in the practice of this prior art.
When this disadvantage is considered in the context of RIM processing, one immediately sees how serious the effectiveness of this molding operation is compromised. This is why the object of the present invention is to remedy the need for the post-hardening necessary in the practice of the prior art mentioned above.
According to the present invention, polyurethane molding compositions are provided which are particularly suitable for RIM operations.
The compositions considered are typically composed with regard to their overall polyol contents. An applicable polyol content essentially consists of a combination of propylene glycols and an oligomeric polyol with an average molecular weight of the order of 3000 to 10,000. In these combinations the propylene glycols constitute at least 50% by weight of the total polyol content. Concerning the glycolic compound indicated, which is specifically a combination of propylene glycol and dipropylene glycol, the last mentioned, that is to say dipropylene glycol, is present without exceeding 50% by weight of the content
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
total in said propylene glycols.
The polyisocyanate is present in an amount producing an excess of isocyanate equivalents for the purpose of carrying out the basic urethanization reaction, under conditions leading to the trimerization of the available excess.
As indicated above, the main objective of the present invention is to provide polyurethane molding compositions capable of converting during the molding cycle into stubborn molded articles which resist high temperatures.
An important feature of the envisaged compositions contributing to the toughness of the resulting moldings measured by the impact resistance lies in the quantity and the composition of the propylene glycol component in the total polyol content. As regards the quantity, the propylene glycol component by weight is approximately equal to twice that of the oligomeric polyol component, the latter being the subject of an appropriate discussion in more detail below. As for the constitution of the propylene glycol constituent, it is also by weight between an equal amount of propylene glycol relative to that of dipropylene glycol, up to a combination ratio of approximately 6: 1.
It has been noted that a minor amount of a lower primary diol, up to about 40% of the propylene glycol component, can be included without adversely affecting the physical strength properties or the degree of hardening. Such diols may be used for reasons of economy, for better compatibility characteristics or for any similar reason. Representative primary diols for this purpose are: ethylene glycol, 1,3-propane diol, 1,4-butane diol, 1,6-hexane diol and 1,4-cyclohexane-

dimethanol.
An oligomeric polyol having an average molecular weight between about 3000 and 10,000 and having a hydroxyl functionality preferably greater than 2 is used in the practice of the invention, together with the propylene glycols. For this purpose a wide variety of such polyols are available. These polyols are special products marketed by a number of chemical manufacturers. In view of this situation, the best overview of these commercial offers can be obtained by identifying the various general categories of polymers by the listing of brands representative of the products falling into these categories. In different cases, certain particular specifications of the listed products supplied by the manufacturer are also indicated.

Certain minor constraints imposed largely by the practice of RIM restrict the preferable choices of polyisocyanates for the general implementation of the present invention. The aliphatic polyisocyanates are not particularly interesting, because of the relatively low order of reactivity associated with their use. Aromatic polyisocyanates, on the other hand, suffer from their relatively toxic nature. The latter, a particular example of which is toluene diisocyanate, can however be used advantageously but only by placing themselves under safe conditions.
The polyisocyanate which is given universal preference for molding operations of the type indicated here is methylene-4,4'-diphenyldiisocyanate (MDI) as well as its various polymer analogs which have an isocyanate functionality of 2.1 to 2.7. A specially suitable polyisocyanate includes the various brands of liquefied MDI products. These products are chemically modified versions of MDI, such that the melting point is lowered by the modification. Mixtures of liquefied MDI products and polymeric isocyanates are particularly preferred in the practice of the present invention.
The polyisocyanate is used in an amount
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
to produce an isocyanate number of about 1.1-1.6; in other words a 10 to 60% excess of NCO equivalence with respect to all of the hydroxyl equivalents present in the molding composition. A catalyst for the urethanization reaction is usually used, the various tin salts and tertiary amines being useful in this connection. In order to achieve a high degree of crosslinking according to the present invention, attributable to the presence of excess isocyanate, a trimerization catalyst is. indicated. Various bases can be used for this purpose.
A particularly preferred catalyst of this type is N, N'N "- tris (dimethylaminopropyl) -hexahydrotriazine, which advantageously serves to effectively catalyze both the urethanization reaction and the trimerization reaction.
The following exemplary embodiments illustrate the manner in which the present invention may be carried out and they further represent the best mode envisaged for its execution. All parts and percentages are expressed by weight, unless otherwise stated.
EXAMPLE I
In this example, a series of simple moldings is prepared, illustrating various embodiments of the invention. The compounding of the molding compositions and the subsequent casting of the moldings are identical in each case. The dipropylene glycol, the propylene glycol and the oligomeric polyol as well as the catalyst are initially mixed in the desired proportions and degassed hot in a rotary evaporator. Cool the mixture in vacuo and mix manually with the appropriate amount
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
of isocyanate in an open receptacle for about 15 to 20 seconds. The mixture is poured into a mold formed by two glass plates coated with a release agent and separated by a filling and by spacers to make a 1/8 "(3.175 mm) cavity.
The mold in each case is heated to 60-90 C before the introduction of the molding composition. After 5 minutes, open the mold, remove the solid plate and divide it into two parts. Part of the plate is tested as molded, while the other diol is post-cured for 1 hour at 130 C. The plates are tested for hot distortion temperature (HDT-ASTM D 648-56) and for Izod impact resistance on notch (ASTM D 256). The details concerning the composition of the various experimental molding experiments, together with the results of the indicated tests which were obtained on these samples, are reproduced in Table I below:

EXAMPLE II
The composition of experiment N 6, cited in Table I of Example I, is treated in an Accuratio VR-75 RIM machine. One feed to the machine consists of the diols, polyol and catalyst, while the other feed consists of the polyisocyanate. A mold temperature of 90 ° C. is observed. Three sheets of glass are placed in all-purpose rovings in the mold cavity (M-8610 Owens Corning).
The plate is removed after 4 minutes and divided into two parts. One part is tested as molded, while the other part is post-cured for 1 hour at 130 C. Various physical properties are determined on the respective samples tested and the results obtained are reproduced below:
