Description
WO 01/26939. PCT/IB99/01661 -1- MOTOR VEHICLE ANTI-THEFT DEVICE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION THIS invention relates to an anti-theft device for a motor vehicle. More specifically, the invention relates to a vehicle anti-theft device for barring access to the pedals of a motor vehicle.
Various different types of vehicle anti-theft devices exist. Some of the known devices are arranged to immobilise a vehicle by affecting the starting or running of the vehicle's motor, while others are designed to lock a vehicle component such as a steering wheel and/or a gear lever.
A problem associated with many conventional vehicle anti-theft devices is that often they are ineffective against specialist unauthorised users. For example, many unauthorised users can override the known vehicle immobilisers which affect the starting or running of a vehicle's motor or remove the entire steering wheel of a vehicle when a steering lock is used.
Also, conventional gear locks and steering locks usually include at least one component which is detachable from the vehicle when not required and which CONFIRMATION COPY WO 01/26939 PCT/IB99/01661 -2can be misplaced or lost. A further drawback associated with gear locks and steering locks is that usually they cannot be totally concealed during normal use of the vehicle and tend to detract from the aesthetic quality of the interior of the vehicle.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION According to the invention there is provided an anti-theft device for a motor vehicle comprising: a base for attachment to the floor of a motor vehicle adjacent the vehicle pedals; a movable barrier; a hinge for connecting the barrier to the base so that, when the base is attached to a motor vehicle floor adjacent the vehicle pedals, the barrier is pivotable between a lowered, inoperative condition in which it allows access to the pedals, and a raised, operative condition in which it projects from the base so as to bar access to the pedals; and a lock located within a lock housing on the base or on the barrier for locking the barrier in the raised, operative condition, the lock including: WO 01/26939 PCT/IB99/01661 -3a locking bolt which is slidable between a locked position in which it extends into a recess in the hinge so as to lock the barrier in the raised, operative condition, and an unlocked position in which it is withdrawn from the hinge; a rotatable cam engageable with a formation on the locking bolt for displacing the locking bolt from the locked position to the unlocked position and/or from the unlocked position to the locked position; and a lockable mechanism for selectively locking the rotatable cam relative to the locking bolt so as to prevent the displacement of the locking bolt from the locked position to the unlocked position.
The lockable mechanism may be a key-operated mechanism.
Alternatively, the lockable mechanism may be electrically or electronically controlled.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the locking bolt is biased into the locked position by means of one or more coil springs and the rotatable cam is arranged to displace the locking bolt from the locked position to the unlocked position against the bias of the one or more springs. In this way, as the barrier is pivoted into the raised, operative condition, the locking bolt is automatically driven into the recess in the hinge to lock the barrier in the operative condition.
WO 01/26939 PCTIIB99/01661 -4- In a particularly preferred embodiment, the rotatable cam and the lockable mechanism are combined in a barrel cam lock, such a an ABLOY 3273C barrel cam lock manufactured by Abloy Oy of Finland.
Typically, the locking bolt is connected to the base and the recess in the hinge comprises a slot in a hinge member fixed to the barrier.
The base may be attachable to the vehicle floor by means of bolts and snap-off nuts.
In one arrangement, a locking bolt guide including a pair of spaced-apart guide limbs is provided for guiding the locking bolt as it slides between the locked and the unlocked positions.
In a preferred arrangement, the movable barrier comprises a steel plate and a mat is provided for attachment to the plate so that, when the plate is in the lowered, inoperative condition, the anti-theft device is concealed below the mat on the vehicle floor.
Typically, the formation on the locking bolt engageable with the rotatable cam is an aperture.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: WO 01/26939 PCT/IB99/01661 Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a motor vehicle anti-theft device according to the present invention; Figure 2 shows a cross-sectional view of the device of the invention attached to the floor pan of a motor vehicle; and Figure 3 shows an exploded perspective view of the device of the invention.
DESCRIPTION OF AN EMBODIMENT A vehicle anti-theft device according to the present invention is illustrated in a raised, operative condition in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings. The device is designated with the reference numeral 10 and includes a base 12, a movable barrier in the form of a generally rectangular plate 14, a hinge 16 for pivotally connecting the plate 14 to the base 12, and a locking mechanism 18 for locking the plate 14 in the raised, operative condition.
With reference also to Figure 3 of the drawings, the plate 14 is seen to include a pair of stiffeners 20 which define a pair of aligned apertures 22. A cylindrical hinge member 24 defining a bore 26 and a locking slot 28 is welded to the plate 14 between the two stiffeners 20 so that the bore 26 is aligned with the apertures 22, as shown in Figure 3. Adjacent the hinge member 24, the plate 14 defines a recessed portion 30 and a circular opening 32 for accommodating the locking mechanism 18 when the plate is lowered over the base 12 into an inoperative condition.
WO 01/26939 PCT/IB99/01661 -6- The base 12 has an elongate aperture 34 in each comer thereof for receiving a locking bolt 36 (only one of which is illustrated in Figure Each locking bolt 36 has a partially threaded shank 38 and a head 40 comprising an upper, part-spherical head portion 42 and a lower head portion 44 of square crosssection. The threaded shank of each bolt 36 is sized to fit through an opening 46 in one of two angle iron backing plates 48 and is arranged to engage with a snap-off locking nut 49.
In practice, the base 12 is fixed to the floor pan of a vehicle 50 adjacent the vehicle pedals 51 by drilling through the floor pan four holes 52 which are alignable with the apertures 34 in the base 12, placing the base 12 on the vehicle floor so that the apertures 34 and the holes 52 are aligned with one another, threading each bolt 36 through one of the apertures 34, one of the holes 52 and one of the holes 46 in the backing plates so that the shanks of the bolts project from the undersides of the backing plates, and fastening the locking nuts 49 to the projecting shanks to sandwich the floor pan between the base 12 and the backing plates 48. Typically, each bolt 36 carries a nylon washer (not shown) between the backing plate and the vehicle floor and a spring washer (also not shown) between the backing plate and the locking nut.
The snap-off locking nuts 49 each include a cup-shaped body 53 with an internal thread, and a hexagonal head 54. When the nuts are rotated onto the shanks 38 to fasten the base 12 to the vehicle floor pan 50, the hexagonal heads 54 shear off at a predetermined load leaving only the cup-shaped bodies of the nuts on the shanks, as illustrated in Figure 2. In this way, the cupshaped body portions of the snap-off nuts lock the base 12 to the vehicle floor.
WO 01/26939 PCT/IB99/01661 -7- In Figure 3, the base 12 is seen to include a pair of spaced-apart hinge members 56 which are welded to the base so as to be alignable with the hinge member 24 and the apertures 22 in the stiffeners 20, thereby to allow a hinge pin 58 to be threaded through the apertures 22, the hinge members 56 and the hinge member 24 to form a hinge between the base 12 and the plate 14. The hinge pin 58 is welded to each of the stiffeners 20 so that the hinge cannot easily be dismantled in an attempt to remove the plate 14 from its operative condition.
The locking mechanism 18 is housed within a protective lock housing welded to the base 12, as shown most clearly in Figure 1. In Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, the locking mechanism is seen to include a locking bolt 62 and a guide member 64 carrying two lateral guide limbs 66 for guiding the locking bolt, in use. The locking bolt 62 defines a central opening 68 and is arranged so that one end 70 is engageable with the locking slot 28 in the hinge member 24. A pair of coil springs 72 are provided for biasing the locking bolt 62 into a locked position in a manner which is described in more detail below.
In this embodiment of the invention, a barrel lock 74 in the form of an ABLOY 3273C barrel cam lock manufactured by Abloy Oy of Finland is positioned within an opening 76 in the guide member 64 so that the cam 78 of the lock is located within the opening 68 in the locking bolt 62. The barrel lock 74 includes two opposed parallel sides 80 which are arranged to engage with two parallel edges 82 of the opening 76 so as to prevent the body of the lock from rotating, in use.
The lock housing 60 comprises a lower section 84 and an upper section 86.
WO 01/26939 PCT/IB99/01661 -8- The lower section includes an aperture 88 and is shaped and sized to house the locking bolt 62, the guide member 64 and the lower portion of the barrel lock 74. The upper section of the lock housing is generally frusto-conical in shape and is welded to the lower section 84 around the aperture 88 so as to house the upper portion of the lock 74. The locking mechanism is assembled by inserting a washer 90 into the lower end 92 of the lock housing section 86 and crimping this section of the housing around the washer adjacent the upper end 94 of the housing to form a protective shield for the top of the lock 74 around the key-hole 95. The upper section 86 of the lock housing is then welded to the lower section 84 and the upper end 96 of the lock 74 is inserted through the opening 76 in the guide member 64 and into the upper portion of the housing 60 so that the upper end of the lock 74 bears against the lower face of the washer 90. The locking bolt 62 is then placed between the guide limbs 66 on the guide member 64 so that the cam 78 of the lock 74 is located within the opening 68 in the locking bolt. In this condition of the locking mechanism, the coil springs 72 are inserted into the lower portion 84 of the lock housing 60 so as to be held between the rear wall 100 of the housing 60 and the rear end 102 of the locking bolt 62. The lock housing 60 is then welded to the base 12 in the manner illustrated in Figure 1 so as to house the locking mechanism on the base 12.
When the base is fixed to the floor of a vehicle adjacent the vehicle pedals, the plate 14 is pivotable between a lowered, inoperative condition over the base 12 in which the vehicle pedals are easily accessible to a driver of the vehicle, and a raised, operative condition in which access to the vehicle pedals is barred so that the vehicle cannot be driven, as illustrated in Figure 1. A floor mat (not illustrated) is provided and is arranged to engage with the plate 14 so WO 01/26939 PCT/IB99/01661 -9as to conceal the device 10 below the mat when the plate 14 is in the lowered, inoperative condition. To lock the plate 14 in the operative condition, this plate is merely lifted away from the base into the raised condition in which the locking bolt 62 is automatically driven into the locking slot 28 in the hinge member 24 by the bias of the coil springs 72. In this regard, the slot 28 in the hinge member 24 is positioned so that in the inoperative condition of the device, the slot is rotated out of alignment with the locking bolt 62 and the end of the locking bolt is biased against the hinge member 24, and in the operative condition the slot 28 is aligned with the locking bolt 62 and the end of this bolt is biased into the hinge slot 28. To return the plate to the floor, the cam lock 74 is operated to effect rotation of the cam 78 within the opening 68 in the locking bolt 62 so as to displace the locking bolt out of the slot 28 against the bias of the springs 72, thereby to allow the plate 14 to be lowered over the base 12.
In this embodiment of the invention, the barrel lock is operated by a key.
However, with suitable modifications, the locking mechanism could also be controlled electrically or electronically.
One advantage of the anti-theft device according to the embodiment of the invention described above is that it is relatively easy for an authorised user to operate since the device is merely lifted away from the floor into the automatically locked, operative condition, or unlocked and then lowered to the floor. In addition, when the device is not required, it is totally concealed below the mat on the floor of the vehicle so as to be out of the way of the driver. A further advantage is that the device does not include any detachable parts that may be misplaced or lost. Finally, the base 12, the plate 14, the housing WO 01/26939 PCT/IB99/01661 10 and the hinge 16 are all formed from high strength steel components which are welded to one another. This together with the fact that the device is securely locked to the vehicle floor with the snap-off nuts 49 makes the device extremely difficult for an unauthorised user to dismantle or remove.
