Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT Applicant(s): DIGITAL PROSPERITY PTY LTD A.C.N. 070 276 701 Invention Title: ELECTRONIC LOTTERY TICKET The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: 2 ELECTRONIC LOTTERY TICKET Field of the Invention This invention relates broadly to an electronic lottery ticket and a system for its generation and distribution over a computer network. The invention will be described herein with reference to particular lottery games but it will be appreciated that the invention does have broader applications to any system or arrangement for distribution of prizes by chance.
Background of the Invention Conventionally, lottery tickets are sold through agents of operators of lotteries over the counter. A physical ticket acts as the bearer document which must be presented if a player wants to claim a prize won. As such, lottery tickets can be very important but unfortunately, as with any other document, they may be lost or stolen with the result that a player may not be able to claim his win.
Rather, any other person who gets possession of the lottery ticket can claim the win by simply presenting the lottery 20 ticket, which acts as proof of his entitlement to do so.
:i This problem has been combated by for example introducing player registration schemes through which details of lottery tickets and players are registered.
With such a scheme, problems associated with lost or destroyed lottery tickets may be overcome. However, particularly smaller prizes, for which notification of the registered player is typically delayed, may still be collected by an "unauthorized" person presenting the actual lottery ticket without any further verification being performed.
With the increasing commercial activity on the Internet, lottery tickets have also found their way onto websites, where they are offered for example via a mail order service. However, on such websites the "operator" offering the service acts more or less as an agent for the clients by holding a "normal" lottery ticket on behalf of J:\Speci\300 399\350 399\36447.doc 3 the client, offering a more convenient way to "purchase" lottery conventional lottery tickets. Therefore the problems associated with the actual lottery ticket described above may be reduced but are not fully eliminated, since the actual ticket may still be lost/stolen. Such systems have further disadvantages relating to the relationship between the "operator" of the website and the client in terms of assurance/security for the client in relation to "getting what they have paid for" in terms of the lottery ticket, since ultimately the physical lottery ticket is still the most important document for claiming any prizes. Unambiguous proof of having entered and of under which e.g. numbers may not be readily available to the client.
Summary of the Invention In accordance with a first aspect of the present invention there is provided an electronic lottery ticket for distribution on a computer network, the lottery ticket comprising a unique electronic address of an owner of the 20 lottery ticket; lottery entry data identifying a lottery game draw for which an entry was made; a lottery parameter on the basis of which a win is determined during the :i lottery game draw; and means for authenticating the lottery ticket.

Brief Description of the Drawings 20 Figure 1 is an example electronic lottery ticket in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.
.t:o Figure 2 is a schematic diagram illustrating a system for the distribution of electronic lottery tickets in Saccordance with an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 3 is an example prize notification in "accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.
Figure 4 shows example terms and conditions for an electronic lottery ticket in accordance with an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 5 shows an example free electronic lottery ticket in accordance with an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 6 shows an example electronic lottery ticket in accordance with another embodiment of the present invention.
J:\Speci\300 399\350 399\36447.doc 9 Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments of the Invention The electronic lottery ticket 10 comprises an e-mail address field 12 in which the example e-mail address 14 of the registered owner of the ticket 10 is identified. The ticket 10 further comprises a game field 16, a draw number field 18 and a draw date and time field 20, in which the lottery type 22, the draw number 24, and the draw date and time 24 of the example lottery draw are inserted, respectively.
The ticket 10 further includes a lottery parameter in the form of a game numbers field 28, in which the game numbers 30 for the example game type 22 are identified. At its end, the electronic lottery ticket includes a PGP digital signature 32. The PGP signature 32 has been generated using the private key of the example company 34 which has generated the electronic lottery ticket By including the PGP digital signature 32, the electronic lottery ticket 10 can be readily authenticated at the example companies 34 end, in the process of which any modification or forgery without the example companies' 34 private key) can be detected. For example, if the game numbers 30 would have been changed by anyone who so.. did not have the companies' 34 private key and the electronic lottery ticket 10 would then be e-mailed to the company 34 to claim a prize, an authentication of the 6 electronic lottery ticket using the companies' 34 private key would detect that the electronic lottery ticket had S.
been modified after it was originally signed.
The ticket 10 further comprises a link 36 to a website (not shown) which shows the terms and conditions associated with the electronic lottery ticket 10. Sample terms and conditions are shown in Figure 4.
Turning now to Figure 2, a system 50 for the generation and distribution of electronic lottery tickets will be described. The system 50 is implemented in a J:\Speci\300 399\350 399\36447.doc 10 computer terminal 52. The various parts of the system are illustrated as isolated components accessible through the terminal 52 in Figure 2 for clarity, however, it will be appreciated that in this embodiment the individual components are software operated from the terminal 52. The individual programs may be utilised out of a complete software package dedicated to the implementation of the system The system 50 comprises an e-mail box 54, via which email addresses of owners of lottery tickets to be generated and distributed can be received. Further, the system comprises a program 56 for generating a lottery parameter 58 on the basis of which a win is determined during a lottery game draw. The program 56 may generate the lottery parameter 58 randomly or in accordance with information inputted by a player on a website 72 associated with the terminal 52.
The system 50 further comprises a program 60 for making an entry to the lottery game draw using the lottery 20 parameter (for example 58). Again, the lottery game draw entered into may be in accordance with information inputted by a player on the website 72 or in accordance with automatic instructions. In this embodiment, the system includes an electronic link 62 to a computer system 64 of 25 an operator of the lottery game draw. Therefore, the entry can be made directly with the operator without involvement of any third parties. The link 62 has therefore preferably similar functionality than the electronic link between the electronic entry machines used by conventional agents of the operator.
o *The system 50 further comprises a program 66 for generating the electronic lottery ticket 10 (see Figure 1 for details) for distribution over the computer network 68.
The program 66 is therefore arranged to include the unique electronic address (for example 55) identifying the owner of the lottery ticket 10, the lottery type, the draw J:\Speci\300 399\350 399\36447.doc 11 number, and the draw date and time for which the entry was made. Further, the program 66 includes the lottery parameter (for example 58) on the electronic lottery ticket Before the electronic lottery ticket 10 is distributed over the computer network 68, either the program 66 or a program 70 through which the mail box 54 is operated, include a PGP digital signature (32, Figure 1) at the end of the electronic lottery ticket The system 50 further comprises a database (not illustrated) for storing all information associated with the electronic lottery tickets and, utilising the electronic link 62 to the computer system 64 of the operator of the lottery game draw, the system 50 is further arranged to process draw results and to generate prize notification e-mails to the e-mail addresses of owners of winning lottery tickets. See Figure 3 for an example prize notification The system 50 may further include an accounting software (not shown) which maintains accounts for players into which payments can be made by either personal cheque, on-line credit card deposits or off-line BPay deposit.
Each time an electronic lottery ticket is generated by a player, the associated costs are debited from the player's account. Further, the accounting software may be arranged 25 to allocate a maximum amount spent by a player over a particular period of time. The limit may be selected by either the player or the person running the system 50. It will be appreciated by a person skilled in the art that various other aspects will be covered by the database and 30 the accounting software, for example player authentication *e*information or player/client withdrawal facilities.
In operation, a player would logon the interactive web-site 72 and could then enter details relating to the lottery entry which he or she wanted to make. Each entry may be specified by the following parameters: Entry game J:\Speci\300 399\350 399\36447.doc 12 Entry type specifies the system type which depends on the game selected.
Game lines the number of sets (or boards), which form each game line of an entry.
Advance draw specifies which draw the entry will be active. This could default to the next draw, but could be set for other draws in advance.
Further lottery entry options could include quick pick options, where for example lotto numbers are generated automatically at random, rather than being inputted by the player. Further, game packs could be offered which consist of two or more fixed entries to certain games which may contain randomly generated game lines.
After paying for the entries made (utilising one of the payment options described above), the electronic lottery ticket(s) associated with the entries made will be e-mailed by the system 50 to the e-mail address of the player.
Apart from acting as an on-line agent on the computer o: 20 network 68 for obtaining electronic lottery tickets, the system 50 may also be used to send "free" lottery tickets to selected e-mail addresses on the computer network 68.
The costs for generating and distributing the electronic lottery tickets would be incurred by a person providing the S 25 selected e-mail addresses to the system 50. The lottery tickets may be used by the person as "free gifts" to attract business or as a reward scheme.
oo An example "free" electronic lottery ticket 90 is shown in Figure 5. As described hereinbefore, since the email address 92 identifies the owner of the electronic lottery ticket 90 any win will be owned by the person associated with that e-mail address 92, irrespective of who has been charged for generating and distributing the electronic lottery ticket It will be appreciated by a person skilled in the art that numerous variations and/or modifications may be made J:\Speci\300 399\350 399\36447.doc 13 to the present invention as shown in the specific embodiments without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as broadly described. The present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects to be illustrative and not restrictive.
For example, the electronic lottery ticket may further include digitised multi-media features, such as still or animated images/graphics greeting card-type images, clip art, photo images, etc.), video clips, midi-, voice-, or other sound clips. The multi-media content may be selected by a user from a menu of options. An example electronic lottery ticket 100 is shown in Figure 6.
The multi-media feature may comprise an emulated paper lottery ticket image, complete with a faint background logo/water mark image.
In the claims that follow and in the summary of the invention, except where the context requires otherwise due to express language or necessary implication, the word comprising" is used in the sense of "including", i.e. the :i 20 features specified may be associated with further features in various embodiments of the invention.
