Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT Applicant(s): POLYSCREEN PTY LTD A.C.N. 008 521 702 Invention Title: SCREEN PANEL The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: 2 SCREEN PANEL This invention relates to a screen panel for a screen deck.
Screen panels generally comprise a polyurethane panel reinforced by a reinforcing frame. The reinforcing frame is usually embedded within the panel. The panel has a plurality of apertures of a particular size to screen material. A number of the screen elements are coupled together in side by side relationship to form a screen deck of a screening machine.
Conventional screen elements, and therefore the decks from which they are formed, are reasonably rigid. This can S. 15 cause some difficulty with the dry screening of some materials such as iron ore and coal which are formed of *..generally fine particles. The rigid deck enables a buildup of the fine particles on parts of the deck other than the apertures and this reduces screening efficiency and 20 generally makes screening more difficult.
The present invention may be said to reside in a screen deck element including: a screen body; a plurality of openings along at least one edge of the body so that when two screen deck elements are placed side by side, a hole is formed for the receipt of a pin to secure the screen deck elements to a frame assembly of a screening machine; a reinforcing frame on the outside of the body adjacent the inner periphery of the body so that the body can be separated from the reinforcing frame by peeling the body from the reinforcing frame.
The present invention may be said to reside in a screen deck element including: a screen body; H:\Karen\Keep\POLYSCREEN-screen-panel.doc 14/09/98 3 a plurality of openings along at least one edge of the body so that when two screen deck elements are placed side by side, a hole is formed for the receipt of a pin to secure the screen deck elements to a frame assembly of a screening machine; and connecting means on the body for releasably connecting a reinforcing frame on the outside of the body adjacent the inner periphery of the body so that the body can be separated from the reinforcing frame by peeling the body from the reinforcing frame.
The separate reinforcing frame and the fact that the body can be located on the reinforcing frame and peeled from the reinforcing frame has a number of advantages. Firstly, it 15 results in the screen deck element being somewhat floppy compared to screen deck elements in which the frame is embedded in the body. This increases the screening efficiency of fine particulate material such as iron ore a* and coal and assists in reducing build-up of the fine -20 particles on the screen deck element. Furthermore, as the body wears, the body can be peeled-off the reinforcing frame and a new body located on the reinforcing frame so that the reinforcing frame can be used with a number of screen deck element bodies. Thus, when a body wears out, 25 it is not necessary to replace the body and frame and only the body need be replaced. Furthermore, screen deck bodies can be interchanged to provide different sized apertures by peeling off screen deck bodies from the reinforcing frame and locating a new screen deck body on the reinforcing frame.
Preferably the reinforcing frame is located in a groove on an inner peripheral surface of the body.
Preferably the frame has a chamfered corner and a corresponding chamfer is provided on the groove in the body.
H: \Karen\ Keep\ POLYSCflEEN-sc reen-pane I. doc 14/09/98 4 Preferably the reinforcing frame is formed from metal embedded in polyurethane material.
Preferably the connecting means comprises a groove formed in a skirt portion of the body for receiving the reinforcing frame.
Preferably the body is of rectangular configuration and having four corners, the groove having a bottom ledge upon which the reinforcing frame locates and the bottom ledge terminating remote from the corners so a cutout is provided to the corners to facilitate flexing of the body and peeling of the body from the reinforcing frame.
preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a screen deck element 20 embodying the invention; Figure 2 is a view along the line II-II of Figure ~Figure 3 is a plan view of a reinforcing frame used with the preferred embodiment of the invention; 25 Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the reinforcing frame in place and the screen deck element located on a frame assembly of a screening machine; and Figure 5 is an underneath view of the element of Figures 1 to 4.
With reference to Figure 1, a screen deck element 10 is shown which has a body 11 formed from polyurethane. The body 11 has a periphery 12 having side edges 12a and 12b.
The body 11 defines a plurality of apertures 16 through which material can be screened by passing through the apertures 16 when the element 10 is located on a screening machine.
H:\Karen\Keep\POLYSCREN-screen-paneldoc 14/09/98 5 The semi-circular openings 14 allow coupling of the deck element 10 to a screening machine by locating a number of the deck elements in side by side relationship so that the openings 14 of one element 10 are adjacent the openings 14 of another element 10 to define a generally circular opening. The circular openings defined by the semicircular openings 14 are in registry with a hole 20 (see Figure 4) in a frame member 25 (see Figure 4) of a screening machine so that a pin can be inserted through the opening hole 20 to secure the deck elements 10 to the frame assembly A suitable pin arrangement is disclosed in our copending 15 Australian Patent Application No. P06046. In other o* embodiments, instead of using semi-circular openings 14, the openings could be rectangular in configuration for receiving H-profile pins and bushes. The contents of the above Australian provisional application is incorporated 20 into this specification by this reference.
As is shown in Figure 2, the body 11 has an upper surface and side edges 12a and 12b are formed from a depending skirt 32 in which the semi-circular opening 14 is formed.
25 The opening 14 includes a shoulder 33 and a tapered bore portion 35 so that when a pin (not shown) is forced through the circular opening defined by two of the semi-circular openings 14, the head of the pin seats on the shoulder 33 and the stem of the pin is forced through the tapered opening 35 to cause the lower portion 32a of the skirt 32 to flex in the direction of arrow A so that it will lock beneath the frame assembly 25 (shown in Figure 4) to lock the deck elements 10 to the frame assembly The skirt portion 32 is provided with a groove 50 which has a lower ledge 52 and a chamfered upper corner 54. The groove 50 receives a reinforcing frame 60 shown in Figure H: \Karenl\Keep\ POLYSCREEN- screen -panel. doc 14/09/98 6 3. The reinforcing frame 60 is dimensioned in accordance with the dimensions of the screen deck element 10 and to seat in the groove 50 which extends entirely about the inner periphery of the skirt 32 as shown in Figure 2. The frame 60 has longitudinal frame members 62, end frame members 64 and cross-frame members 66. The reinforcing frame 60 is formed from a steel insert 62 shown in dotted lines partially in Figure 3 which is embedded in polyurethane so that the polyurethane completely surrounds the steel insert 62.
As best shown in Figure 4, the insert is located in the groove 50 so as to provide reinforcement to the body 11.
Because the frame 60 is not embedded within the body 11, 15 the screen deck element 10 is somewhat less rigid than conventional deck elements in which the reinforcing frame is embedded in the polyurethane body 11 and therefore the screen deck formed from the screen deck elements 10 is somewhat more floppy which makes it much more suitable for 20 screening fine particulate material. Furthermore, different bodies can be located on any particular frame to provide different screening aperture 16 and also to enable replacement of bodies 11 as they wear out.
25 In order to secure the reinforcing frame 60 in place, the periphery 12 of the body 11 can be flexed in the direction of arrow C in Figure 2 so that the frame 60 can effectively be "peeled-on" or "peeled-off" from the reinforcing frame Figure 5 shows an underneath view of part of the element of Figures 1 to 4. In order to facilitate peeling-off of the body 11 from the reinforcing frame 60, the groove defined by the lower ledge 52 and chamfered upper corner 54 does not extend all of the way to each of the corners 13 of the body 11 (only one corner being shown in Figure The groove 50 defined by the peripheral ledge 52 and chamfered H:\Karen\Keep\POLYSCREEN-screen-panel.doc 14/09/98 7 upper corner 54 stops short of the corner 13 as is clearly shown in Figure 5. This enables the corner 13 to flex as the body 11 is peeled in the direction of arrow C in Figure 2 to peel the body 11 from the reinforcing frame 60. The termination of the ledge 52 prior to the corner 13 therefore effectively forms a cutout region 19 at each corner 13 which reduces the stiffness of the corner 13 and enables peeling of the body 11 from the reinforcing frame Since modifications within the spirit and scope of the invention may readily be effected by persons skilled within the art, it is to be understood that this invention is not limited to the particular embodiments described by way of 15 example hereinabove.
