More particularly, though not exclusively, the invention relates to a roofing panel assembly having a main panel and a clip-on panel affixed thereto. Such a roofing panel might interengage with other roofing panels to form a fixed roof or be used as a louvre for pivotable mounting in an array of louvres over an entertaining area for example.
It is known to construct roofs by affixing roofing panels upon a framework having roof trusses and purlins. These panels are adapted to overlap at adjoining edges thereof.
lo These panels have only a limited degree of resistance to torsional and bending stresses.
In the construction of roofs, it is necessary to provide a significant number of supporting purlins to compensate for the limited resistance of the known roof panels to bending loads.
Known louvres of the type used in an array of pivotable louvres have limited 15 resistance to torsional and bending stresses. That is, where it is desired to pivot the *-louvres, torque is applied to one end thereof, which torque must be transferred along the length of the louvre such that the louvre pivots without substantial twisting. Also, since the louvres often span a wide area, they can bend under their own weight or when strong winds prevail. It is known to produce louvres having both upper and lower surfaces spaced apart by a gap or a core to provide insulative properties. However, such louvres must be purpose-designed and manufactured.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate at least one of the above disadvantages and/or more generally to provide an improved roofing panel which can be used in the construction of roofs or as a louvre in an array of pivotable louvres.
DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION There is disclosed herein a roofing panel assembly including: a main panel having a cross-sectional profile with a series of peaks and troughs and a pair of grooves formed therein, each groove being located at a position in between a peak and a trough such that at least one peak is positioned therebetween, and a clip-on panel having a pair of laterally opposed edge strips, each adapted to cooperate with a respective one of said grooves for attachment of the clip-on panel to the main panel so as to define a space between the clip-on panel and said at least one peak.
Preferably, said space is at least substantially filled with a substantially rigid core material.

Preferably, the main panel and the clip-on panel are fabricated from rolled steel or aluminium or other metals or plastics.
Alternatively, the main panel and clip-on panel can be extruded.
Preferably, the extrusion is an aluminium extrusion.
Preferably, the main panel and clip-on panel each have a surface coating.
Preferably, the surface coating is a powder coated finish or "colourbond" type finish.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Preferred forms of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: .Fig. 1 is a schematic cross-sectional end elevational view of a main panel, S Fig. 2 is a schematic cross-sectional end elevational view of a clip-on panel, Fig. 3 is a schematic cross-sectional end elevational view of a roofing panel having •the main panel of Fig. 1, the clip-on panel of Fig. 2 and a foam core therebetween, Figs 4 through to 10 are schematic cross-sectional end elevational views of a series S" of alternative main panel profiles, and Figs. 11 to 13 are schematic cross-sectional end elevational views of alternative clip-on panels.
S.DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS In Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a main panel 11. Main panel 11 has a profile with a series of peaks 12 and troughs 13 between which intermediate portions 19 extend. In the profile of Fig. 1, the central peak 12 together with the intermediate portions 19 define a space 14 therebelow. To either side of the space 14 there is a trough portion 13. Beyond the trough portions 13 and in the respective intermediate portions 19 there is formed one of a pair of grooves 15. The profile depicted in Fig. 1 is typically roll formed steel or aluminium but might alternatively be an extrusion of plastics or aluminium, a plastics moulding or any suitably rigid structure.
In Fig. 2 there is depicted a clip-on panel 16 having a pair of laterally opposed edge clips 17. The clip-on panel can be formed of the same materials and by the same techniques as is the main panel 11. These edge clips are each adapted to cooperate with the respective grooves 15 of the main panel to form the structure depicted in Fig. 3. A prefabricated core 18 is positioned in the space 14 between the clip-on panel 16 and the peak 12. The core may be polystyrene, polypropylene, wood or other suitably rigid material. The core 18 can be glued into position at the underside of the main panel 11 [N:\LIBLL]01097:KEH prior to attachment of the clip-on panel 16. Alternatively, the core might be glued or otherwise affixed to the upper surface of the clip-on panel prior to attachment to the main panel.
Figs. 4 to 10 show alternative main panel profiles. In each embodiment, a pair of grooves 15 is provided in an intermediate portion between a peak and a trough with at least one peak 12 being positioned therebetween. However, it should be appreciated that two or more peaks 12 might be positioned between the pair of grooves Figs. 11, 12 and 13 show alternative profiles for the clip-on panels. In each case, the clip-on panels have edge clips 17 adapted to cooperate with grooves 1o The clip-on panel shown in Fig. 13 for example is adapted to cooperate with the main panel as depicted in Fig. 5. The panel of Fig. 11 can be adapted to cooperate with any one of the main panels depicted in Figs. 6, 7, 8 or 9, whereas the clip-on panel of Fig. 12 can be adapted to cooperate with the main panel of Fig. 4 or Fig. 10 for example.
When the main panel and clip-on panel are interconnected, the torsional rigidity of the assembly is significantly increased. Further, the resistance of the assembly to bending deformation is increased as compared to that of the main panel alone. That is, the span between ends of a roofing panel or pivotable louvre can be increased without the requirement for increased intermediate support members.
It should be appreciated that modifications and alterations obvious to the skilled in the art are not to be considered as beyond the scope of the present invention. For example, the grooves 15 might be replaced by protrusions in which case the clip-on panels might be adapted to clip around those protrusions.
As a further alternative, the prefabricated core need not be glued in place. As yet a further option the core may be omitted to leave an empty space between the main panel 25 and clip-on panel.

Claims (8)

1. A roofing panel assembly including: a main panel having a cross-sectional profile with a series of peaks and troughs and a pair of grooves formed therein, each groove being located at a position in between a peak and a trough such that at least one peak is positioned therebetween, and a clip-on panel having a pair of laterally opposed edge strips, each adapted to cooperate with a respective one of said grooves for attachment of the clip-on panel to the main panel so as to define a space between the clip-on panel and said at least one peak.
2. The roofing panel assembly of claim 1 wherein said space is at least substantially filled with a substantially rigid core material.
3. The roofing panel assembly of claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the main panel and the clip-on panel are fabricated from rolled steel/aluminium or other metals/or plastics.
4. The roofing panel assembly of claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the main panel and clip-on panel are extruded.
5. The roofing panel assembly of claim 4, wherein the clip-on panel is •aluminium.
6. The roofing panel assembly of any one of the preceding claims wherein the main panel and clip-on panel each have a surface coating.
7. The roofing panel assembly of claim 6 wherein the surface coating is a powder coated finish.
