PATENTS ACT 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION NAME OF APPLICANT(S): Sara Lee/DE N.V.
ADDRESS FOR SERVICE: DAVIES COLLISON CAVE Patent Attorneys S1 Little Collins Street, Melbourne, 3000.
*o* INVENTION TITLE: Tea, coffee or herb bag provided with a label The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- The invention relates to a tea, coffee or herb bag provided with a string having a label attached thereto.
Such bags, hereinafter to be referred to as 'tea bag', generally consist of porous material. The bags are filled with extractable solid substance, such as tea leaves, ground coffee or dried herbs.
Tea, coffee and herb bags are generally suspended in a cup, a mug or a tea pot with boiling water for preparing tea, coffee and the like. In theory, the bags can have any shape, but in practice they are either rectangular or round.
After the beverage has been prepared, the bags are generally removed. To simplify the removal of a bag, it is typically provided with a string with a label. This label may also serve as identification for the brand and type of the material.
The attachment of the label to the string is generally effected by gluing or by means of a staple. However, this requires the use of separate materials, which does not only mean an additional operation, but which is also 20 disadvantageous in view of environment and processing of the bags in composting apparatuses.
The object of the invention is to provide a tea, coffee "ii or herb bag provided with a string with a label, wherein, for attaching the label to the string, a simple construction 25 is used which can be realized without additional aids.
*e *oo *o P:\OPERRSH12627-97 spe.doc31/07/00I -2- According to the invention, there is provided a tea, coffee or herb bag, provided with a string with a label, wherein the label is provided with a slit at one edge, said slit making an angle with the edge of from 450 to 1350, wherein the string is fitted in the slit and is wound around an edge of the label and passed again through the slit whereby the string is retained in the slit due to the stiffness of the label and thereby the string is retained to the label without any additional fastening means.
Surprisingly, it has been found that the string can be attached to the label in a simple manner, without additional aids. This involves the string being first inserted into the slit, whereupon it is passed around the edge of the label and passed through the slit again. Owing to the stiffness of the paper of the label, the string stays in position perfectly, without requiring additional material or aids. Preferably, the string is fitted at the inner end of the slit in the label.
Preferably, the slit is of angled form providing first and second portions of the slit, the first portion extending from the edge of the label and the second portion extending from the inner end of the first portion. The included angle between the two portions may in particular be between 600 and 1200. However the angle may not necessarily be as sharp and it is also possible to use a rounded angle.
The included angle between the two portions of the slit is preferably slightly less than 900, preferably from 750 to 850. Such an angle has the advantage that the string S: 20 remains properly attached to the label, while the fitting operation remains easy.
When a slit of angled form is used, it is preferred to pass the string twice around the edge wherein the slit is located. When the slit is substantially rectilinear rather than of "angled form the slit will be located transversely to the label, while the string is passed 0 twice around one of the three other sides of the label.
go 25 The positioning and angle of the slit in the label are not particularly critical. From an aesthetic and practical viewpoint, it is preferred that in a square or rectangular label, the :00. slit be provided at the center of an edge. This slit is preferably provided perpendicularly to the edge. This provides the easiest way to fit the string.
Hereinabove, the use of a substantially square or rectangular label is assumed.
However, it is also possible to use a label having a different shape, for instance a polygon having more than four sides, a circular or elliptic shape and the like. The positioning of the P:\OPER\RSH\12627-97 spe.doc-31/07/00 -3slit whether of rectilinear form or of angled form will be similar to that described for square labels.
Embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing which shows five different labels each provided with a slit either of rectilinear form or of angled form.
In all five examples, the string is passed through the slit, wound around the bottom side of the label and then passed through the label once again as illustrated for the right hand square label.
Throughout this specification and claims which follow, unless the context requires otherwise, the word "comprise", and variations such as "comprises" or "comprising", will be understood to imply the inclusion of a stated integer or group of integers or steps but not the exclusion of any other integer or group of integers.
