Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A PETTY PATENT Name of Applicant: DAVID JOSEPH NASH Actual Inventor: DAVID JOSEPH NASH Address for Service: Invention Title: CULLEN CO., Patent Trade Mark Attorneys, 240 Queen Street, Brisbane, QId. 4000, Australia.
A STREET NUMBER SIGN Details of Associated Provisional Applications: The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me: A STREET NUMBER SIGN TECHNICAL FIELD This invention relates to signs, in particular signs for displaying the street number of a residence or business.
BACKGROUND ART Adequate and clear street numbering for homes and businesses is desirable for many reasons.
Mail and parcel deliveries are generally made by delivery persons from vehicles and a good clear street number assists them and the general public at large.
In addition, emergency services should be able to identify quickly addresses in the event of a call out for sickness, accident, fire or the like.
Unfortunately not all home and business dwellers are conscientious about the provision of adequate street numbering.
Some local authorities ensure that there is at least some street numbering, particularly in residential areas by painting numbers on kerbs, however these numbers which are low set and face directly to the road are not particularly easy to pick up and can be readily obscured by parked vehicles.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a streetnumber sign which can be mounted in an elevated position on a letter box or other point of fixture of a dwelling which is readily recognisable to traffic and pedestrians approaching from any direction.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the ensuing description which is given by way of example.
DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION According to the first aspect of the present invention there is provided a street number sign comprising two conjoined and angularly orientated panels, top and bottom substantially triangulated webs joined to and extending between the panels, a rear mounting flange joined to complementary edges of the panels and webs, and means by which the mounting flange can be secured to a mounting surface.
Said means by which the mounting flange can be secured to a mounting surface can comprise a plurality of apertures each having flanking strengthening ribs extending between the mounting flange and adjacent portions of the panels.
Each of the panels can have a recessed site for the mounting of a street number.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Aspects of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Figure 1 of the drawings is a front perspective view of a street number sign according to the present invention, and Figure 2 is a top view of the sign of figure 1, and Figure 3 is a rear view of the sign of figure 1.
With respect of the drawings the present invention provides a street number sign generally indicated by arrow 1 comprising two conjoined and angularly orientated panels 2, top and bottom triangulated webs 3 joined to and extending between the panels 2, a rear mounting flange generally indicated by arrow 4 joined to complementary edges of the panels and webs and means such as apertures 5 by which the sign can be secured to a mounting surface.
Each of the panels 2 is provided with a recessed site 6 with respect to which indicta such as street numbers 7 can be mounted. The street numbers can be reflective stick-on numbers which by preference are sized to take up most of the depth of the recessed sites 6 of the panels. In such an arrangement the top edges of the stickers are protected by the borders of the recess and are less likely to peel or to be vandalised.
The mounting flange 4 is a peripheral flange and the apertures are provided with flanking strengthening ribs 8 extending between the mounting flange 4 and the panels 2.
Figure 1 of the drawings shows a sign of the present invention mounted on the front face of a letter box 9 (shown in broken outline) just below the delivery slot 10 of the box.
When the sign is positioned as shown the web 3 immediately below the slot 10 provides a ramp or guide to assist accurate placement and insertion of mail items.
The angle between the panels 2 may vary between a ninety degree, obtuse and acute angles.
The sign can be fabricated or moulded and is by preference moulded in U.V. stabilised plastics.
Aspects of the present invention have been described by way of example only and it should be appreciated that modifications and additions thereto may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
