One preferred form of the present invention will now be described with o reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Figure 1 is a plan view viewed in direction AA of one bag of a preferred form of the present invention, oo.: Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view through section BB of the bag of Figure 1, ooo* Figure 3 is a sectional view at CC of a bag of Figure 1, Figure 4 is an alternative configuration of a preferred form of the bag of the •present invention viewed in direction AA, :2 F: 20 Figure 5 is a view through section BB of the bag of Figure 4, Figure 6 is a view at section CC of the bag of Figure 4, Figure 7 shows detail of the manufacturing sequence of a bag wherein the liquid absorbent assembly is positioned between the top and bottom plies, Figure 8 shows detail of the manufacturing sequence of a bag wherein the liquid absorbent assembly is located between top and bottom plies and retained by a perforated ply, RFigure 9 shows detail of the manufacturing sequence of a bag wherein the -6liquid absorbent assembly is sealed between the perforated ply and between the top and/or bottom plies, Figure 10 shows detail of the manufacturing sequence of a bag wherein the liquid absorbent assembly is positioned between the top and bottom plies and retained by the intermediate ply, wherein the liquid absorbent assembly is fed from a stack, Figure 11 shows detail of the manufacturing sequence of a bag wherein the liquid absorbent assembly is located between top and bottom plies and retained by a perforated ply, wherein the liquid absorbent assembly is fed from a stack, and Figure 12 shows detail of the manufacturing sequence of a bag wherein the liquid absorbent assembly is sealed between the perforated ply and top and/or *see bottom plies, wherein the liquid absorbent assembly is fed from a stack.
The present invention relates to bags 1 which are preferably of a lie flat nature when there is no contents within the boundary of the bag. With reference to Figures 1-3, the bag preferably has at or adjacent its mouth edge 2 a region which allows the bag or sequence of bags to be wicketed. Wickets are able to be inserted S...through apertures in the region at the mouth edge 2 to receive a plurality of bags and o to maintain these in a stacked configuration. The preferable wicketing capability of the bag of the present invention allows for securement of the bag during filling with for example meat product such as poultry. It is however not essential that the bag of the present invention be wicketable and this is illustrated as an option in Figures 4 6.
The bag is most preferably capable of being used to package meat products such as whole chickens, chicken parts or processed chicken meats, but it is envisaged that the bag can be used for other meats.
The meat product may be packaged in the bag of the present invention by vacuum packaging however, preferably the meat will not be vacuum packed within the bag.
The top and bottom plies 3, 4 define top and bottom panels of the bag 1. The bag further has a mouth edge 2, a bottom edge 5 and side edges 6.
Between the top and bottom plies 3, 4 is located a liquid absorbent assembly 7. The liquid absorbent assembly 7 is constrained to either the top or bottom by a retainer ply between the top and bottom plies.
The retainer ply 8 is located between the top and bottom plies and may be engaged to one of the top or bottom plies in several ways. In one preferred form the ply 8 is engaged along one edge thereof to one of the top or bottom plies in a direction transverse to the direction of the side edges 6. Such engagement is preferably across the entire width of the bag and hence also seals along the two side o o edges 6 to form a pocket as shown in Figures 4 6 into which the liquid absorbent assembly 7 is or can be inserted. Most preferably the retainer ply 8 is engaged by a heat seal 9 to one of the two plies transverse to the edges 6. Alternatively such 15 engagement may be by a suitable adhesive.
oor In an alternative form of the present invention the retainer ply 8 between the top and bottom plies is engaged to either the top or bottom ply along two transverse lines of adhesion or sealing as shown in Figures 1 3. In this preferred form of the present invention the liquid absorbent assembly 7 is enclosed by the retainer ply 8 20 and the top or bottom plies. In this preferred form of the present invention the retainer ply 8 is preferably perforated or micro perforated or made of a liquid permeable material.
As shown in Figures 4 6 of the alternative configuration of a bag wherein the absorbent assembly 7 is not entirely enclosed by the retainer ply 8 the heat seal 9 is preferably along that edge of the retainer ply 8 closest to the mouth edge 2, i.e. the retainer ply 8 has its open end/openable end towards the bottom edge RThe liquid absorbent assembly may be of such a shape as to either extend -8beyond the open edge of the retainer ply 8 or such that it does not extend beyond the edge as shown in Figures 4 6. The retainer ply 8 of the preferred form of the bag of Figures 4 6 may or may not be perforated, micro perf9rated or made of a liquid permeable material.
The top and 5ottom ply may in one form of the present invention consist of the same ply of material folded along the bottom edge 5 to lie over each other and sealed along theedges 6. Alternatively the bag may be made up of top and bottom plies brought together and sealed along the side edges 6 and bottom edge preferably by seal cutting. Such heat seal cutting involves the application of a hot tool which simultaneously seals along the edge and trims or cuts the edge or edges of the bag.
oooe oe-, The liquid absorbent assembly 7 provides a means of absorbing excess fluids S"or liquid juices which may be present in the bag having come from the meat contained in the bag. The liquid absorbent assembly 7 positioned within the bag is able to absorb such liquid juices and hence aid in keeping these away from the meat contents.
S...The bag 1 (in a lie flat state) may be substantially rectangular or square in oo shape as shown in Figures 4 6 or may have arcuate regions at or towards the bottom edge 5 as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3. A person skilled in the art will however S• 20 realise that many alternative configurations and shapes of the bag will allow the present invention to be performed.
Preferably the liquid absorbent assembly is of a non-woven matrix of cellulosic or other appropriate fibres, which confine at least an additional absorbent component. Preferably such an absorbent component is a silica gel however a person skilled in the art will realise that many alternative configurations may exist.
Preferably the bag is made from a polyolefin (polypropylene or Apolyethylene). Preferably it is a low density polyethylene but it could be made from -9other appropriate food grade materials. The retainer ply 8 which supports the liquid absorbent assembly 7 has a film thickness when of polypropylene of from about 25 microns whereas the alternative polyethylene bag is inthe range of about 35 microns and preferably 40 microns. The polyethylene is preferably not a gas impermeable film but is substantially liquid impermeable.
Once a meat product has been inserted into the bag by a user of the bag, the bag may be sealed by appropriate sealing means such as twisty ties, heat sealing, knotting or the like.
A person skilled in the art will realise that there are alternative forms which are known for sealing the bags of the present invention.
~Figure 7 shows details of the manufacturing sequence of a bag wherein the liquid absorbent assembly is located between but not fully enclosed within the retainer ply and the top or bottom plies. In this manufacturing sequence it can be rr seen that the retainer ply is preferably a non perforated film.
0. 0 15 A ply of material is drawn continuously from a primary reel 20 and is 409.
manipulated appropriately to be positioned so as to run past a feeding station which :feeds the liquid absorbent assemblies 7 from a reel 30. Preferably the liquid absorbent assemblies 7 are located on the reel 30 in a continuous form and are separated therefrom at a servo driven dispensing unit 31. The servo driven dispensing unit 31 operates appropriately to feed the liquid absorbent assemblies 7 from the reel 31 at appropriate intervals onto the ply of material drawn from the primary reel As the ply drawn from the primary reel 20 and the liquid absorbent assembly 7 are positioned appropriately relative thereto, a web of material from a second reel 23 is drawn onto the material from the primary reel 20 and the liquid absorbent assemblies. This material from the second reel defines the retainer ply 8.
-,cjRA The retainer ply 8, liquid absorbent assemblies 7 and the ply from the primary reel 20 in advance as an assembly of plies past a longitudinal sealer 24 which defines the engagement between the top and/or bottom ply and the retainer ply 8.
Preferably the longitudinal sealer 24 seals the retainer ply 8 to the top or bottom plies by means of heat sealing. It is however envisaged that alternative sealing means may be utilised such as the use of adhesives or the like.
The assembly of plies and the liquid absorbent assembly 7 is next advanced towards and past a former which folds the ply from the primary reel 20 along a longitudinal fold line to bring the two regions on either side of the fold line together.
The fold line defines the bottom of the bag As the material advances on from the former the bag of the present invention is defined by a cutting station 26. Preferably the cutting station 26 is a 0 sealing bar which seals each of the bags along the edge 6 and simultaneously separates each of the bags from the material travelling from the former.
Optionally a contour sealer 27 may be provided prior to the cutting station 26 to provide contour to the bottom edge or end of the bag. In addition the apertures for 0@eS ooo• the wicketable version of the bag may also be formed at this stage.
"-Figure 8 illustrates an alternative manufacturing sequence wherein a perforated retaining ply is utilised and is dispensed from the second reel 23. This is 20 the only difference between the manufacturing sequence illustrated in Figure 7.
Figure 8 illustrates the sequence wherein the reel of material which provides the retainer ply between the top and bottom plies) is a micro-perforated material.
Figure 9 illustrates yet another alternative manufacturing sequence to produce the bag substantially shown in Figures 1 3 wherein the liquid absorbent assembly 7 is fully enclosed between the retainer ply 8 and the top or bottom ply. It can be seen that there is provided in this manufacturing sequence duel longitudinal 4 sealers 24 to provide the seals top and bottom transverse of the side edges for each -11of the bags.
The contour sealer 27 as shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9 is optional and if it is desired for a substantially rectangular bag (in a lie flat state) to be produced then this contour sealer is not required.
The manufacturing sequences illustrated in Figures 10, 11 and 12 are substantially similar to the sequences shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9 respectively, however instead of the liquid absorbent material being fed from a reel 30 as shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9 there is provided a stack of liquid absorbent assemblies 7 from which each of the liquid absorbent assemblies is fed onto the material from the primary reel It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that alternative configurations of manufacturing sequences will allow the bag of the present invention to be manufactured.
