AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A PETTY PATENT Name of Applicant: Actual Inventor: Address for Service: lan Bruce STOCKHAM CULLEN
CO.,
Patent Trade Mark Attorneys, 240 Queen Street, Brisbane, QOld. 4000, Australia.
Invention Title: A FISHING LINE REWINDING
APPARATUS
The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me: A FISHING LINE REWINDING APPARATUS This invention relates to a fishing line rewinding apparatus which prevents or at least reduces loose fishing line from accumulating on a boat deck.
Fishing boats and particularly reef and deep sea fishing boats have a number of towed fishing lines. The fishing lines can be quite long and need to be wound in and played out to suit.
These fishing boats fish using hand lines wound onto an open reel. When a fish is hooked, the hand line is pulled in by hand and not simply rewound on the reel. The result of this is that long lengths of hand line accumulates on the boat deck. The accumulated line can tangle and snag an presents a safety hazard as the line can be tripped over, or if suddenly played out can catch a person unawares.
The present invention is directed to a fishing line rewinding apparatus which functions to prevent loose fishing line from accumulating on a boat deck, and which may overcome at least some of the abovementioned disadvantages or provide the public with a useful or commercial choice.
In one form, the invention resides in a fishing line rewinding apparatus for preventing loose fishing line from accumulating on a deck, the apparatus having an outer case, a fishing line reel mounted for rotation within the outer case, an opening in the outer case to allow the fishing line to pass therethrough, a drive motor operably connected to the reel to rotate the reel in a line retracting direction, and a switch to operate the drive motor.
In another form, the drive motor, when switched off allows the reel to be relatively free wheeling, or the drive motor is able to be decoupled from the reel to allow the reel to free wheel.
The apparatus functions to rewind any loose fishing line accumulating on a boat deck and caused by hand pulling the fishing line in.
The apparatus need not function to pull the fish in and therefore a large drive motor is not required. The apparatus only has to have a drive motor sufficient to wind loose fishing line back onto the line reel.
The apparatus has an outer case housing the fishing line reel.
The outer case provides protection to the reel and safety to the user. The outer case can comprise a metal or plastic housing which may be solid but may also comprise a grid or mesh arrangement. The outer case should be strong enough to take the usual knocks and wear and tear typical for a fishing vessel.
Inside the outer case is a reel on which the fishing line can be rewound. The reel typically has side flanges to define a peripheral recess or channel over which the line can be wound.
The apparatus has a drive motor operably connected to the reel and which functions to rewind loose fishing line onto the reel. The drive motor may be a relatively small electric motor which can be battery powered with a battery being housed in a suitable opening in the apparatus. The drive motor can be coupled to a shaft or axle and the reel can be rigidly mounted to the axle such that rotation of the axle will cause the reel to rotate.
The drive motor is preferably sufficient to rewind loose fishing line but need not be so powerful to enable it to wind in a hooked fish. This allows the apparatus to be small and compact and battery powered.
In one form of the invention, the drive motor is permanently coupled to the shaft or axle. When the drive motor is switched off, fishing line can still be pulled out of the apparatus and against the natural resistance of the switched off drive motor. In another form of the invention, the drive motor can be decoupled from the shaft or axle which means that the reel can be free wheeling when the drive motor is switched off.
An embodiment of the invention will be described with reference to the following drawings in which Figure 1 is a side view of the apparatus according to an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the apparatus of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated an apparatus 1 for rewinding loose fishing line. Apparatus 1 has an outer case 3 which contains a fishing line outlet 2. Inside outer case 3 is a rotatable reel 4 which can accommodate fishing line 5. Reel 4 is rewound by a small electric motor 6 which is coupled to a drive shaft 7 on which reel 4 is mounted. Electric motor 6 is powered by a battery 13 and is operated by an on-off switch 12. The apparatus in the embodiment further contains a tackle compartment 11, a knife holder 9 and a hook latch Referring in greater detail to the various components, outer case 3 is formed from sturdy fibreglass, plastic or other strong sturdy noncorrosive or corrosion resistant material. Outer case 3 is substantially rectangular when viewed in plan and in side view and is large enough to totally enclose rotatable reel 4.
Case 3 has a wider lower foot portion which is hollow and which contains the tackle compartment 11 and a battery box in which battery 13 can be safely stored.
Reel 4 is flanged as better illustrated in Figure 2 and thereby defines a peripheral recess or channel which can accommodate large amounts of fishing line 5. Reel 4 is rigidly mounted to drive shaft 7 and drive shaft 7 is journalled through the side walls of outer case 3 to rotatably support the reel relative to the case. Outside one side wall of outer case 3 is a small electric motor 6 which is protectively housed. Electric motor 6 is coupled to drive shaft 7 and is powered by battery 13. Activation of electric motor 6 is by the on-off switch 12. Turning the switch on causes the electric motor to rotate drive shaft 7 in a line retracting direction to retract line spooled on the boat deck safely about reel 4.
Drive motor 6, when switched off, is sufficiently low powered such that line 4 can be pulled out of outer case 3 and against the bias of electric motor 6. Alternatively, electric motor 6 can be entirely decoupled from drive shaft 7 which makes the reel free wheeling within the outer case.
In use, the fishing line 5 is baited and thrown into the water and trawled behind a fishing boat. If a fish is hooked, the fishing line is pulled in by hand and motor 6 is switched on to rewind any loose fishing line into outer case 3 and onto reel 4.
The apparatus prevents large amounts of loose fishing line sitting on a boat deck.
Should a hooked fish suddenly take off, the apparatus will allow the line to be wound out either against the bias of the motor or by decoupling the motor or by simply switching off the motor.
It should be appreciated that various other changes and modifications can be made to the embodiment described without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Claims (3)

1. A method for keeping loose fishing line off a deck, the method comprising pulling fishing line from the sea and onto the deck manually, and using a fishing line rewinding apparatus to rewind the fishing line on the deck about a reel in the apparatus, the apparatus having a drive motor which is powerful enough to rewind the loose fishing line on the deck, but insufficiently powerful to pull the line into the boat.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the fishing line rewinding apparatus has an outer case, a fishing line reel mounted for rotation within the outer case, an opening in the outer case to allow the fishing line to pass therethrough, a drive motor operatively connected to the reel to rotate the reel in a line retracting direction, and a switch to operate the drive motor.
3. The method of claim 1 or claim 2 substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawings. DATED this 14' day of December 1999 lan Bruce STOCKHAM By his Patent Attorneys CULLEN CO.
