Abstract

The disclosed line caddy (5) is a device preferably made from either molded plastic or folded non-corrosive strip of metal and designed to attach to an area on the circular external surround or edge of a spool of fishing line. It comprises two folds or moldings (1) and (2) and a platform (3) with a cutting blade (4) incorporated within the platform. The first fold (1) or molding is of an internal width suitable to fit securely over the edge of the spool whilst being flexible enough to allow it to be pulled on and off any spool as required. The second fold or molding (2) is of an internal width sufficiently small to tightly hold the free end of the fishing line in place to prevent unraveling of the remaining line on the spool. The platform (3) provides a support for a blade (4) or cutting edge which is aligned at such an angle to the folds as to make cutting the fishing line at the desired length an easier task.

Description

Line caddy
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a fishing line securing and cutting device.
Background of the Invention
The catching of fish from the sea or other waterways has not only been a means of obtaining food for survival, but also a source of recreational pleasure throughout recorded human history. Whilst commercial fishing boats often use nets to selectively remove fish from the water, recreational fishing persons most commonly use bait, lures or fly's attached to fishing line as a means of enticing fish to feed or bite in order to hook the fish on the end of the fishing line. Commonly the fishing line itself is held by the person fishing via a rod connected to a reel, or via a doughnut shaped hand reel which allows the line to be pulled in against the force of the swimming fish without causing physical harm to the hands of the person fishing.
Whilst the fishing line is wound to a reel or hand reel as above described, there is often a need to make use of additional fishing line; for example in the making of traces which connect the bait to the primary fishing line apparatus- that is the rod and reel or hand reel. Traces commonly consist of a length of fishing line to which swivel devices, weighted sinkers, multiple hook or other devices are attached by means of tying of various knots. The additional lengths of fishing line are often cut from a spool of line, upon which spool is the usual presentation of any fishing line for purchase by the recreational fisher.
Summary of the Invention
This invention has been specially designed in order to provide an improved means for cutting line from a spool of fishing line and also to provide a means of preventing unraveling of the line from the spool.
Existing methods to cut fishing line include the use of scissors or knives and in addition there are numerous commercially available fishing tools which comprise a blade or knife; including hand-held tools that incorporate a blade with various other tools such as screwdrivers, devices for threading line through the eye of a hook and other useful tools. Existing methods to prevent unraveling of line from the spool include boxes or cases into which the entire spool may be placed.
This invention is novel and represents an improvement on these other methods in that it incorporates both features as outlined above in a smaller, more lightweight, cheaper to manufacture device that is fitted directly to the fishing line spool.
A line caddy device in accordance with this invention comprises a means of attaching the device to the spool of line, a means of securing or holding the line and a means of cutting said line at a desired length.
According to the present invention there is provided a line caddy device including at least: a fold or molding on the device being a receiving space of a suitable size and construction to allow secure but removable attachment to some part of the circular rim, edge or outer diameter commonly manufactured as the surround to the line itself on a fishing spool; a groove within the device into which the said line is pulled in order to secure the line and a sharp blade incorporated within a small platform on the device over which the said line is pulled in order to cut the line at the desired length.
Preferably the construction of the line caddy is resistant to corrosion from salt or water.
Preferably the blade is made of stainless steel or other non-corrosive metal.
Preferably the fold or molding being the receiving space for the edge of the spool is minimally pliable to ensure secure attachment to the spool.
Preferably the fold or molding being the receiving space for the edge of the spool is sufficiently flexible to allow the device to be removed from the line caddy and replaced as desired.
Preferably the groove is of a width and depth to securely incorporate a variety of line diameters.
Preferably the blade is not removable or replaceable.
Preferably the blade is positioned in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the folds and therefore parallel to the direction of lie of the loops of fishing line wound around the spool. Preferably the line caddy device is able to be manufactured in various sizes in order to be compatible for use with various brands of fishing line.
Preferably the construction of the line caddy is molded from plastic with a non-corrosive metal blade incorporated, or constructed completely from non- corrosive metal such as from a folded strip of stainless steel; however other materials can also be used.
Description of Drawings
The invention may be better understood with reference to the illustration of embodiments of the invention which:-
Figure 1 is an elevation of the line caddy showing all features of the device.
The line caddy shown comprises two folds or moldings (1) and (2) and a platform (3) with cutting edge (4). The first fold or molding (1) is the receiving space referred to herein which attaches the line caddy device to the circular rim or edge of a spool of fishing line. The second fold or molding (2) is the groove referred to herein which is narrow in width in order to securely hold onto a length of fishing line pulled into the said groove which by virtue of the said design prevents unraveling of the remaining length of fishing line which is wound around the spool. The platform (3) incorporates the cutting edge (4) which is the blade referred to herein and is either a non-corrosive metal blade incorporated into a plastic structure, where the line caddy is of molded plastic construction, or is a sharpened edge of non-corrosive metal, where the line caddy is of entirely metal construction. The said cutting edge may be aligned roughly or absolutely perpendicular to the plane of the folds so that it lies in a plane parallel to the direction of lie of the loops of fishing line wound around the spool in order that the said cutting blade might thereby have maximum mechanical advantage in the action of cutting the line.
It is appreciated that various modifications to the inventive design may be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
