TO BE COMPLETED BY APPLICANT So A TECHNOSEARCH PTY. LIMITED N am e of A pplicant: Actual Inventor(s): Ladislov Stephan KARPISEK SRobert G. HALLIDAY Address for Service: 44 Ashley Street, SHornsby, N.S.W. 2077 InVention Title: IMPROVEIMENTS IN LOCKS WITH DOUBLE MOVEMENT BOLTS PM8075 filed 12.09.94 Details of Associated Provisional Applications: Nos: The following statement Is a full description of this Invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:bb: I 1 IMPROVEMENTS IN LOCKS WITH DOUBLE MOVEMENT BOLTS This invention relates to bolt type locks as commonly used on security doors comprised of a rectangular frame made from aluminium extrusions with an infill of expanded metal mesh.
Locks for the above purpose desirably have several characteristics including, an ability to be used in right hand or left hand opening doors, 10 (ii) a sliding bolt which normally has a short bolt S projection condition so that only a small force acting on the closing door will cause the bolt to retract as the nose of the bolt engages the striker plate on a door jamb, this facilitates the fitment of an automatic door closer to the 55t1 door, (iii) an automatic change to a long bolt projection condition when the bolt is aligned with the aperture in the 1" l L striker plate on a door jamb, (iv) an automatic retention of the bolt in its short bolt projection condition following retraction of the bolt back into the lock body, as by operation and then release of the lock handle, provision of deadlock means to deadlock the bolt but only when in the long bolt projection condition,(vi) multiple means to both activate and deactivate the deadlock 2 means, including a manual means operational from what would be the inside of the door and key operated means operable from both sides of the door and which will over-ride the manual means, (vii) a security arrangement to prevent unauthorised release of the deadlock means.
The above features in various combinations are to be found in several known locks. However, an inspection of the mechanisms of the known locks (many of which are patented) reveals the known locks rely on reasonably complex interactions between numerous lock components in order to provide the desired characteristics. Whilst all of the features to (vii) are desirable in locks this application is concerned principally with locks having simple and effective means to provide the features (ii) to (iv) above.
Broadly stated the invention can be said to provide a door lock including a housing for mounting in a door, aperture means in a wall of the housing, a lock bolt able to adopt a short projection condition or a long projection condition relative to said housing, said lock bolt and a latch bolt are adjacently positioned and are both linearly slidably mounted in substantially parallel relationship in the housing and are both aligned with the aperture means and are both resiliently biassed to adopt a condition in which a portion of each bolt extends from said housing through said aperture means, i adjacent edges of the lock bolt and the latch bolt both have a f i 1 L 1__1 CI_ 3 shoulder forming step separating a major edge portion on each bolt which is located within the housing from a minor edge portion on each bolt with the spacing apart of said minor edge portions greater than the spacing apart of said major edge portions of the bolts, a captive latching member disposed between the adjacent edges of said bolts and substantially prevented from movement in the direction of sliding of the said bolts and able to move in the direction of the spacing apart of the bolts, said latching member having a dimension in the direction of the spacing apart of the bolts which is greater than the spacing apart of the major edge portions of the bolts and less than the spacing apart of overlying minor and major edge portions of the respective bolts, co-operating disengagable abutment means on the lock bolt and the latch bolt to cause said latch bolt to retract into said housing, said abutment means of said bolts when engaged position the major edge portion of the latch bolt in overlying relationship with the minor edge portion of the lock bolt so that the shoulder forming step on said lock bolt will engage with said i, latching member to releasably retain said lock bolt in its short projection condition, and co-operating stop means on the lock bolt and the housing to define the long projection condition of the lock bolt.
A presently preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: 1, (7 4( w I- ~e.
Fig. 1 is an side view of the lock of the present invention with a housing cover plate removed to show the lock bolt in its short projection condition, Fig.2 is a view similar to Fig.l with the lock bolt in a retracted condition, Fig.3 is a view similar to Fig. l with the lock bolt in the long projection condition and Fig.4 is a view similar to Fig.3 where the gap between the lock and the door frame is abnormally large.
In Fig.l there is shown a lock housing 1 having a mounting plate 2 and a body 3. The body 3 is defined by 0 walls 4,5,6 upstanding from a panel 7 such that the walls 4,5,6 and the mounting plate 2 enclose a cavity in which *',the lock working parts are housed. There are other lugs 4* *1 S 15 and walls upstanding from the panel 7 for purposes not relevant to the present invention.
The lock includes a lock bolt 8 and a latch bolt 14 with adjacent edges, the bolts are arranged to linearly slidably move in substantially parallel relationship within the housing. The lock bolt 8 is a substantiallyrectangular 4 #0 solid, member with a nose 9 whichis profiled in a manner to allow it to move smoothly over the ramped face of a door striker plate of known type. There is a minor edge portion 10 on the bolt 8 which is stepped down from the bolt major edge portion 11 leaving a shoulder 8a and there is an abutment lug 12 upstanding from the bolt upper edge 11 near the rear end of the bolt 8. The bolt projects through an opening 13 in the mounting plate 2.
n f ~L
CI
The latch bolt 14 is spaced from the lock bolt 8 and it has a minor edge portion 15 stepped up from the major edge portion 16 of the bolt 14 leaving a shoulder 14a.
There is an abutment lug 17 upstanding from the bolt edge 16 at the rear end of the bolt and disposed rearwardly of the lug 12 of the bolt 8. The lock bolt 14 projects through an opening 18 in the mounting plate 2 spaced from the opening 13 by a section 19 of the mounting plate 2 which acts as a front retainer for a latch member to be described.
The housing includes upper and lower guides 20,21and an intermediate guide 22 to support the sliding movement of the lock bolt and the latch bolt. The guide 22 is spaced r from the front retainer 19 to provide a pocket 23 open top aad bottom. Housed in the pocket 23 there is a latch member in the form of a rod or a ball 24 with a thickness It, 4 (diameter) greater than the spacing apart of the major edge si, portions 11,16 but less than the spacing apart of a minor It S edge portion of one bolt and the major edge portion of the other bolt when in overlying condition.
There are springs 25 and 26 which respectively urge the bolts to a condition where they extend from the housing.
The latch member 24 has substantially no movement possibility in the direction of the bolt movement. The latch member 24 has movement possibility in the direction of the spacing apart of the bolts. As illustrated in Fig.l r movement in the latter direction is prevented with the ?7 I 6 latching member 24 releasably retaining the lock bolt 8 in its short projection condition. The iatch bolt 14 is retained in the position shown in Fig.l by engagement of the lugs 12,17. It could also be so retained by the engagement of the shoulder 14a with the member 19, if that member was slightly higher than as shown.
Fig.2 shows the position of the bolts when a door to which the lock is attached is being closed. Specifically, the nose 10 of the bolt 8 will come into engagement with the striker plate 27 of a door jamb 28 and the retraction of the bolt 8 will, through the lugs 12,17, cause the bolt 14 to retract.
It is to be noted that unlike other locks in the marketplace the bolt 14 does not rely on engagement with :b.
the striker plate 27 to cause it to retract. This being the case the end profile of the bolt 14 need not be such as to co-act with the striker plate 27, as is the requirement for the present locks of this 'type in the marketplace.
When the bolt 8 is fully retracted as shown in Fig.2 the latch member 24 lies between the minor edge portions 10,15. When the bolt 8 comes into alignment with the aperture 29 in the striker plate 27 the bolt 8 will begin to move out of the housing and as it does the bolt 14 will follow, through engagement of the lugs 12,17, until the end of the bolt 14 engages the striker plate 27. This engagement may occur when the bolt is projecting a small amount from the lock housing 1 (see Fig.3, where the clearance between the mounting plate 2 and the door jamb is f/^ 3 4mS~s ,i
II
s very small) or it can project a substantial distance (see Fig.4, where the clearance is abnormal). In either case the length of the face 15 is such that the shoulder 4a will not interfere with the forced upward movement of the latch member 24 as the shoulder 8a passes below it.
In a door lock opening operation rotation of the actuator for the lock, in the form of a handle engaged with a shank in the hole 30 of the actuator arm 31, will retract the bolt 8 until the latch member 24 is no longer supported by the edge portion 11. The latch member 24 will fall onto the edge portion 10 allowing the shoulder l4a of the bolt 14 to pass over the latch member 24 and the bolt 14 to extend from the housing 1 to an extent determined by engagement of the lugs 12,17. When the door handle is released the bolt 8 will advance under the influence of the spring 25 and the bolt 14 will advance with the spring 26 holding the lug 17 against the lug 12 until the Fig.l configuration is again achieved.
The present invention has a number of features which distinguish it from other locks of the "two movement bolt" type. Principally, the latch bolt 14 is not caused to retract by engagement with the striker plate and therefore the nose of the latch bolt can be of any profile.
Secondly, the latch bolt is not in direct latching engagement with the bolt but interacts through an intermediate member, the latch member 24. This has a number of advantages including the asility to have large Sengagement surfaces on the respective members ensuring long

8 life and positive action between the elements providing the bolt latching. Thirdly, because the movements of the bolts are linear they can be mounted in a better manner than is the case with some other locks in the marketplace with the result that the bolts will move very smoothly and be positively guided in a rattle free manner in the housing 1.
The foregoing description is of a preferred embodiment of the invention and it is to be understood that changes can be made to various components described without depa-ing form the inventive concept hereinbefore disclosed and hereinafter claimed.
The deadlocking and deadlock latching operations normally associated with locks of this type have not been Ott I' described in detail and can be of any suitable type.
S 15 Preferably they would be of the type shown as covered by patent applicationi by the present applicant.
