9999 Name of Applicant: ITW-Ateco GmbH Actual Inventor(s): Volker Jonatzke Address for Service: 9 99*#99 9 PHILLIPS ORMONDE FITZPATRICK Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys 367 Collins Street Melbourne 3000 AUSTRALIA Invention Title: FASTENER MEANS OF PLASTIC MATERIAL Our Ref 507362 POF Code: 95566/1682 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of perilrming it known to applicant(s): Fastener Means of Plastic Material The invention relates to fastener means of plastic material for the attachment of a flat structural member to a support member.
In particular in the manufacture of automotive vehicles it is otei' necessary to attach a flat structural member, for example a metal sheet member, a plastic member or the like to a support member. It has become known to use metal sheet bolaits or screws for such attachments. Furthermore it has become known to make such attachments of plastic elements such as spreading rivets or the like, It would be desirable to provide an improved fastener means of plastic material for the attachment of a flat structural member to a support member, which fastener means may be formed as an integral member, yet allows for an effective attachment.
According to a broad aspect, the present invention provides a fastener means of plastic material for the attachment of a flat structural member to a support member under use of a threaded fastener, said fastener means including: 15 a head adapted to engage one side of said flat member; a shank connected with said head and adapted to be inserted into a fastening hole of said flat member or said support member, respectively, said shank having two .o diametrically opposed and spaced legs; a block-shaped portion connected with the end of said legs facing away from 20 said head, said connection being such that said block-shaped portion can be shornoff from said legs, said block portion on the outer side having two oppositely located spreading surfaces which extend obliquely towards the lower end thereof and including a toothing, with the opposing inner surfaces of said legs also having a toothing adjacent to said block portion, said toothings cooperaing if said block portion is pulled between said legs whereby said block portion is locked between said legs and said legs are spreaded into engagement with the edge of said fastening hole; flexible holding portions between said head and said block portion and coaxial bores of said head and said block portion for the accommodation of said threaded fastener.
The fastener means of the invention comprises three portions, i.e. a head adapted to engage one side of said structural member, a pair of more or less resilient legs connected to the head and extending in spaced relationship to each other, and a CM N/WOW/GAYINODEL MT7.162.DOUC
I
block-shaped portion at the end of the l3gs. The block-shaped portion is connected to the legs such that it may be shorn-off from the legs by means of a threaded tastener and may be pulled in between the legs. The block-shaped portion has at its outer side a pair of opposed surfaces inclined such that they spread the legs outwards into engagement with an edge of a hole in the support member when the inclined surfaces are pulled in between the legs. The inclined surfaces of the block-shaped portion are provided with a toothing which cooperates with a toothed surface at the inner side of the legs so as to lock the block-shaped portion between the legs when it has been pulled in between the legs for spreading them. The block-shaped portion will remain in such spreading condition when the threaded fastener is being removed.
Finally the fastener means of the invention includes flexible holding portions between the head and the block-shaped portion, which holding portions maintain a continuous connection between the head and the block-shaped portion even when the block-shaped portion was shorn-off and pulled in between the legs.
15 The head and the block-shaped portion include coaxial bores for receiving a threaded fastener. The threaded portion of the threaded fastener forms threads in the bore of the block-shaped portion so that the block-shaped portion is pulled in into the gap between the legs when the threaded fastener is being rotated. This will deform the holding portion. The holding portions prevent the block-shaped portion from 20 dropping when the threaded fastener is removed and forcedly withdrawn in order to release the flat structural member.
In order to provide for guidance of the block-shaped holding portions when it is oo being withdrawn, a further modification of the invention provides that a groove or a key, respectively, is formed on the inner surface of said legs, said groove or key extending parallel to the axis of said fastener, said toothed surfaces on the outer side of said block portion including a key or a groove, respectively, for the guidance of said block portion between said legs. This prevents the block-shaped portion from sliding sideways or rotating such that the spreading will be nullified.
In order to facilitate inserting the fastener means of the invention into the hole of the support member, the block-shaped portion has two diametrically opposed extensions which have a chamfer' at the outer side to provide an insertable tip.
tf"TNWORD,'(AYINODELETr.'7%62DoC The invention provides a fastener means which may be easily made and handled, and which enables a flat structural member such as a metal sheet to be mounted to a support member in a very effective manner. The bore of the support member may be of widely varying length because the block-shaped portion can be pulled in between the legs in varying positions and locked therebetween. When the threaded fastener is being released, the holding portions prevent the block-shaped portion.shorn-off from the legs from dropping.
The above and further features and advantages of the present invention will be more fully appreciated from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment of the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a fastener means according to a preferred embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the fastener means of Fig. 1 in the direction of arrow 2 15 Fig. 3 is a cross section of the fastener means along line 3-3; 15 Fig. 3 is a cross section of the fastener means along line 3-3; 4 is a cross section of the fastener means along line 4-4; Fig. 5 is a similar view of the fastener means as in Fig. 1, however in a o condition where a metal sheet has been attached to a support member by means of a 4* threaded fastener.
20 The fastener means 10 in Figures 1 to 5 includes a flange-like head 12 and a shank 14 connected to the underside of head 12, The shank 14 comprises diametrically opposed legs 16, 18. The legs have their lower ends connected to a block-shaped portion 20 so that they can be shorn-off therefrom. The legs 16, 18 at their ends are tapered externally as shown at 22. Internally the legs 16, 18 are provided with toothings 24 adjacent their end portions. As shown in Fig. 3, the toothing 24 is interrupted by a groove 26 which is formed at the inside of the legs 16, 18 and extends from the lower end of the legs 16, 18 to a bore in the head 12. The bore in the head 12 is indicated at 28 by dotted lines.
The block-shaped portion 20 which includes a bore as shown at 30 and which is aligned to bore 28 includes a toothed surface 32 on diametrically opposed outer sides thereof. As shown in Fig. 2, the toothed surface 32 is divided by a projecting rib 34. The rib 34 is aligned with the groove 26 and may engage into the groove 26 cIYVNWOIGAY/OD1EL-ETI72.1DOC when the block-shaped portion 20 is pulled in between the legs 16, 18 as shown in Fig. As may be seen the toothed surfaces 32 of the block-shaped portion 2P' are inclined such that they diverge downwards in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the shank 14.
Between the leg 12 and the block-shaped portion 20 there are formed stripshaped holding elements 36 which are positioned on opposite sides of the bore 28 between the legs 16, 18. The strip-shaped holding portions 36 are relatively thin in a radial direction, are however of a certain width in a direction transverse thereto.
Two projections 38, 40 are provided on the bottom side of the block-shaped portion 12 and include a rib 42 tapering upwards. Furthermore, they are provided with converging edges as shown in Figs. 2 to 4. This provides an insertable tip for the attachment process.
Fig. 5 shows that a sheet metal 44 (bottom shield) such as a bottom sheet for 15 an automotive vehicle has been applied to a support member 46 (sheet metal carrier).
The sheet metal 44 and the support member 46 have mounting holes aligned to each other. The fastener means 10 is preassembled to be in the form shown in Fig. 1.
0..
o Thereafter the metal sheet 44 is applied. Then a threaded fastener 48 (bolt or screw) including a head 50, a threaded shank 52 and a washer 54 is inserted through the 20 bore 28 into threaded engagement with the bore 30, with the threaded fastener cutting into the wall of bore 30. As a result a tension force is exerted upon the blockshaped portion 20 so as to shear it off from the legs 16, 18 and to urge it into the space between the legs 16, 18. The toothing 24 of the legs 16, 18 and the toothing 32 of the block-shaped portion 20 will come into interlocking engagement with each other. Engagement between the ribs 34 of the toothed surfaces 32 and the grooves 26 of the legs 16, 18 provides for guidance of the block-shaped portion 20 and prevents the block-shaped portion 20 from rotating when it is pulled in between the legs 16, 18.
The legs 16, 18 are spreaded apart when the block-shaped portion 20 is pulled in between the legs as shown in Fig. 5. They will be urged against the lower edge of the hole of the support member so as to secure the metal sheet 44 to the support CUWNWOIU1/OAYWNObL)PtJSO7.'2.DOC 6 member 46. The flange-like head 12 is preferably of circular shape and has a diameter sufficient to overlap the mounting hole in the sheet metal 44.
When the threaded fastener 48 is being withdrawn, the block-shaped portion will remain between the legs 16, 18. The support member 46 may be of variable thicknesses which may be accommodated by the block-shaped portion 20. The varying thicknesses may encompass die flashes.
